"Latin America Faces an Environmental Emergency" http://upsidedownworld.org/main/news-briefs-archives-68/2584-qlatin-america-faces-an-environmental-emergencyq

Brazil is in a critical state because of its nearly complete appropriation of resources and their impacts. It is followed by the Andean countries, like Peru (with big mining projects) and Ecuador (extensive petroleum exploitation). Brazil is already a major mining country, mostly iron and aluminium, and has a policy to increase that production through low taxation in order to continue attracting foreign investment. Most worrisome is that the strategy includes flexibilising its environmental policies. Also of concern is the search for "cheap energy" through hydroelectric dams in the Amazon.

comment-first he should have mentionedcolombia in this scenario, however the countries he did name,do share a common theme and thread, and that is peru and brazil both promote free market capitalism, wich is the huge factor behind the drive to usurp and exploit the enviroment for profit(highly coveted by foreign investors)and sadly in case of ecuador, though it tries to balance socialism and capitalism, there are numeorous reasons why it has been forced to rely on oil explotation, one to pay its many times paid over imf debt, and second the concessions made to oil exploration corporations that date back quite afew years, all of wich correahas tried to stop but in face of court disputes has yet to triumph thru international disputes ...
