Miami needs Colombia free-trade pact with Colombia http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/03/20/2124204/miami-needs-colombia-free-trade.html
“It’s a no-brainer,” said Sen. Max Baucus, the Democratic chair of the Finance Committee. “Get it done!” echoed Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch. In a rare bipartisan approach, the Senate leaders expressed frustration on the administration’s failure to act on the pact that would increase U.S. exports and create thousands of American jobs.I share this frustration. As the former chairman of the World Trade Center Miami and senior vice president for Seaboard Marine Ltd., the cargo carrier that moves the most amount of freight from and to the Port of Miami, let me add my voice to the chorus of those calling for quick action on the Colombia agreement. Earlier this month, Gov. Rick Scott, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, and Reps. David Rivera and Mario Diaz-Balart joined with other local leaders—including Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado — to convene a meeting at the port with Colombian Ambassador Gabriel Silva and more than 150 representatives of the international trade industry. The message was clear: Washington needs to act now on the pact that has languished for more than four years.
