The people surrounding Vedanta Alumina Project at Lanjigarh have nearly missed a disaster on 5th April 2011. Having 1 MT production capacity of Aluminum Refinery Plant of Vedanta Alumina Ltd. at Lanjigarh of Odisha, had a crake in the western part of its Red Mod Pond. It occurred because of 45 minute of thunder shower at 1:00 PM on 5th April 2011. Because of the crake, poisonous red mud ran into the nearby water bodies and mixed up with the Bansadhara River flowing through this area. After 3 hour of discharge, the company authority managed to patch up the crake. The company authority has also succeeded in suppressing the matter and didn't let it go to the media.
