base and training facilities in Turkish territory in exchange for advanced technologies. Against the background of the reconciliation between Israel and Turkey, theBritish newspaper Sunday Times is reporting today that Israel intends to askTurkey to station a base and training facilities in its territory, from
which it could operate in the event that it will have to attack Iran.In exchange, Israel will transfer advanced missile systems and observationtechnologies to Turkey. According to the reports, Turkey is interested inthe Arrow interception system as well as electro-optic systems produced byEl-Op, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems.Discussions will begin this week between the two countries, during whichIsrael's National Security Advisor, Ya'akov Amidror, will arrive to Ankaraand will attempt to convince Turkey to agree to the stationing of astrategic strike force at the Turkish Akinci airbase, located northeast ofAnkara. Amidror is expected to offer Turkey an advanced electronic warfaresystem produced by Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).Amidror will also attempt to finalize the details of the reimbursementagreement with Turkey for the families of the nine Turkish civilians killedduring the Marmara incident of May 2010.
Prior to the rift between the countries, the IAF trained in Turkey'sairspace and used the Akinci airbase, and Turkish pilots trained in Israelifacilities in Israel's Negev region.
