Jeffrey Gedmin: The democracy-promoting, Iraq War-supporting, pro-Israel neocon who influenced Merkel’s EU austerity program
In his latest New Europe column entitled “Merkel’s real agenda: mugging the poor,” David Cronin asks why the German Chancellor has cast herself as Europe’s “empress of austerity.” The answer, he believes, is to be found by looking at those who have shaped the German leader’s worldview. Having traced the influence of think tanks such as Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft (INSM) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) on Chancellor Merkel’s harsh economic thinking, Cronin adds:
                         Merkel has also been reported to have obtained informal advice from Jeffrey Gedmin. A former big-wig of the American Enterprise Institute, Gedmin has spent much time trying to convince Europe to become more like the US. In a 2005 opinion piece for The Financial Times, he wrote about the “employed and unemployed alike happily indulging themselves” by sipping “over-priced café lattes”. He mused about whether a changing economic situation might give “people the swift kick they apparently need”.
While Jeffrey Gedmin may appear to want Europeans to be more like Americans, he has in fact helped to make the U.S. more like Israel.As former resident scholar at the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute, Gedmin didn’t have to go too far — either literally or metaphorically — to sign the Project for a New American Century’s September 20, 2001letter to George W. Bush. That PNAC letter urged the ill-informed president to respond to the 9/11 attacks by not only going after Al-Qaeda but also removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq, threatening retaliation against Iran and Syria if they didn’t immediately cease support for Hezbollah, and ending assistance to the Palestinian Authority if it didn’t do more to collaborate with expansionist Israel’s “fight against terrorism.”Having played his small part in helping to bring “freedom” to Iraqis, Gedmin went on to bigger and better things in the “democracy promotion” establishment. In 2007, he was named president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a broadcaster funded by the U.S. Congress (many of whose members are in turn funded by pro-Israel PACs). In light of subsequent “revolutionary” developments in the Middle East, the following snippet from the neocon’s profile at Right Web, which tracks “militarists’ efforts to influence U.S. foreign policy,” is particularly intriguing:Observers at the time noted that even before Gedmin’s appointment, the RFE had begun cutting its broadcasts to European countries while increasing the amount of its programming for Islamic countries[8], a process that began during the tenure of previous director Thomas Dine, former head of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.Just as some of Radio Free Europe’s new audience were rising up to overthrow their dictators in early 2011, Gedmin moved on to the London-based Legatum Institute. Legatum, in partnership with Foreign Policy magazine, publishes Democracy Lab, which they describe as “a unique journalistic effort to cover the political and economic challenges facing countries that are striving to make the transition from authoritarianism to democracy.” As Legatum’s chief executive officer, he co-chaired a 2011 report on Egypt’s democratic transition jointly published with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Apparently unfazed by the rising tide of political Islam,the report characterized Egypt’s uprising as part of a “transition toward democracy and a free market economy” and said that the United States and Europe “should do much more to incentivise and support economic reforms, which, in turn, will support the political transition to democracy.” Among other things, the report called for a U.S.-Egypt free-trade agreement.Given Gedmin’s remarks about latte-sipping Europeans, Egyptians and other Arabs undergoing this “transition” shouldn’t expect these “reforms” to be of much benefit to them. Likewise, Europeans shouldn’t be too surprised when the economic counsel of a pro-Israel neocon who supported the invasion of Iraq on the basis of non-existent WMDs doesn’t work out too well, either.

An US military intervention in Syria or Iran would be likely to set off a geopolitical explosion in the whole region of the Middle East, the consequences of which will be felt by the whole world.This opinion was expressed by the American political scientist and former US national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, whose article is published today by the Financial Times."The forceful export of democracy (neocolonialism)to both Syria or Iran - is dangerous daydreaming, said Brzezinski. - Most of the prevailing borders, which date back to the Anglo-French diktats following the First World War are shaky. Even the region's major states, notably Iran and Turkey, are vulnerable to internal ethnic and religious strains"."In this flammable setting, an American intervention in the region would be likely to set off a region-wide explosion, a political analyst thinks. - The inevitable rise in the price of oil - prompted by increased insurance costs even were the Strait of Hormuz forcefully kept open by the US navy - would wreak havoc on Europe's financial recovery. Differences among European states would intensify".According to Brzezinski, thus Russia can strengthen its influence in Ukraine and Georgia, since the energy dependence of the EU on Russian "black gold" will increase.In this case, the geostrategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing will be strengthened to counter the promotion of the interests of Washington.The result of such developments, according to Brzezinski, will be "the emergence of chaos in international relations".The author offers the next US president to be elected in early November a series of measures to stabilize the geopolitical situation."First, on Syria, to engage Russia and China in support of an internationally mandated and monitored ceasefire, as a cooling-off phase before internationally supervised elections", the political scientist emphasized."Second, in the absence of agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue, to continue tightening sanctions and pledge publicly that the US will retaliate against any threat by Tehran to any Middle Eastern state"."Third, to provide strong and explicit support for a more politically united Europe through an updated joint Atlantic Charter"."Fourth, to undertake a high-level strategic dialogue with the new Chinese leadership to codify the fundamental interest of both countries in avoiding a replay of Europe's tragic wars of the 20th century", concluded Brzezinski.

Some of the hardcore Islamic militants from China's troubled Xinjiang province, bordering Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), are heading to Syria and linking up with organisations like al-Qaeda to fight against the Syrian government, a media report said today."Leaders from 'East Turkestan' terror groups have organised for members to head for Syria to participate in their quest for jihad," state-run Global Times quoted Chinese anti-terrorism authorities as saying.The organisations include the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) and the East Turkestan Education and Solidarity Association (ETESA) that push for "independence" for China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where Uyghur Muslims of Turkic-origin opposed settlements of Hans.Since May, ETIM and ETESA members have been going to Syria and linking up with organisations like al-Qaeda to fight against the Syrian government, the report said."ETIM is being helped by al-Qaeda and they are collecting funds through drug and gun trafficking, kidnapping and robbery. (CIA FRONT) disappeared in the northern city of Aleppo on August 20.A delegation from the IHH group obtained the picture, dated October 24, during a trip to Damascus where they visited a group of detainees in a prison, the group said on its website.The picture shows Unal with a short stubble and in apparent good health.It was not immediately clear if the group met with Unal nor did it specify the source of the picture."Efforts are still continuing for (Unal's) release," IHH said in an online statement.IHH secured the release of two other Turkish journalists in Syria in May.There had been no news from the journalist since Syria's al-Ikhbariya news channel aired a video of him a week after the pair went missing.

In one of the most detailed examinations of the operational capacity of jihadist elements in Syria, Bilal Saab identified a handful of small jihadist groups, saying that the Syrian battlefield is “awash with al-Qa`ida-linked jihadist cells.”[4] These cells, Saab argued, are disorganized and lack a charismatic leader capable of unifying them.[5] Other media reports describe radical fringe elements operating within a diverse setup that is still dominated by Syrian nationalists rather than transnational ideologues. In arguably the most comprehensive study so far, an International Crisis Group report in October outlined how “the presence of a powerful Salafi strand among Syria’s rebels has become irrefutable.”[6]Increasingly Unsecured Borders For the past 40 years, Syria has used its foreign policy to back proxy groups in Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine. Yet prior to the outbreak of protests in March 2011, Syria was already experiencing a low level terrorist threat from the Salafi-jihadi group Jund al-Sham, which claimed responsibility for numerous attacks in the country including one on the U.S. Embassy in Damascus in 2006.[12] It is also suspected of targeting a Syrian intelligence building in Damascus in September 2008, which killed approximately 17 people.[13

Israeli Spy Arrested in Lebanon

According to a report by the Lebanese Al Akhbar website, the intelligence unit of the Lebanese army has arrested an official of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) in the Palestinian Rashidiya Camp near the Lebanese city of Sour.
The detainee has confessed to having links with Israelis since 2006 and the dossier has been referred to Lebanese military court, the report added. Lebanon has disbanded tens of Israeli spy cells during the last three years and has arrested more than 150 Israeli spies.

A Glance at Alawis in Turkey Turkey’s creation of crisis in Syria with the support of the US and some Arab regimes has had some consequences inside Turkey.Early last week, at the invitation of two religious and social organs of the Alawis, namely, the Federation of Alawi Societies (ADF) and the Federation of Baktashi Alawis (ABF), 200,000 Alawis held a rally in Ankara. The Alawis announced the goal of their rally to be opposition to the release of permission for Turkey’s attack on Syria and censuring the government for ethnic and religious discriminations. Some of the participants showed their opposition to military intervention in Syria by carrying the Syrian flag and chanting the slogan “Syria will not become Karbala.” They declared that Turkish policies are serving the US interests and promoting war and religious differences in Syria and have nothing to do with Turkey’s national interests. One of the Alavis leaders Salaheddin Ozil delivered a speech saying, “There is no religious equality in Turkey and the Alawis are facing with many restrictions for holding religious and cultural ceremonies. We have gathered here to oppose discrimination, violence and inequality and announce that Turkey belongs to the entire nation.”The head of Baktashi Alawi Union Ozil added that the Turkish premier Recep Tayip Erdogan should apologize for the problems he has created for the Alawis. Ozil added that Erdogan cannot resolve the problems of Turkish democracy yet he speaks of establishing democracy in Syria.Ozil stated, “The Alawis are not seeking war with Syria, Iran, Greece and any other government and our citizens with any religion are not willing to such a war.” Many Kurdish political activists and representatives of People Republic Party and Peace and Democracy Party in the national assembly joined the rally and chanted slogans with the Alawis. Turkish researcher Ms. Cinay Ozdin pointed to her studies on the government’s plans for frightening the Alawis and forcing them to migrate from İskenderun. Referring to granting nationality to some Syrian Sunni refugees, Ozdin said, “This plan is for creating a sort of balance with Iskenderun Alawis who comprise the majority in the region and have carried the photos of Syrian president Bashar Assad and Syrian flag several times. Erdogan government has already granted Turkish nationality to many Afghans of Iskenderun.”Turkish Alawis have roots in the country’s history and in the past centuries, whether during the Ottoman Empire or the reign of Kamal Ata Turk, they have played little on the political scene. Over 15 million people i.e. about 20 percent of the 76 million population of Turkey are Alawis. Meanwhile about 18 to 20 percent of the Syrian population are Alawis. Erdogan’s effort for destabilizing Syria with the support of the US and some Arab regimes is considered a measure against the multi-million Syrian Alawis whom are deemed to have power by the westerners. On September 8, 2011, the Turkish premier compared Syria’s incidents with Karbala’s tragedy. A few days later, daily Milliyet wrote, “Those who, for years, have been allies with the US which kills Muslims are partner of oppression. They have also used discriminating policies in the country and cannot speak of Karbala event.”Conflict between the Turkish government and the Alawis is mounting; and indeed they have been under pressures of the rulers throughout history.

Bolivian President Bluntly Describes US Diplomacy
Bolivian leader Evo Morales tends to speak in a carefully chosen language, in part as a precaution natural for someone who is permanently under fire from his opponents. It long became a staple of the US propaganda to portray Morales as an individual who does not measure up to the standards normally associated with his status, and on the fringes the campaign against the Latin American country's first indigenous president chronically slips into downright racism. After a period of evident restraint, Morales did respond to the US invectives in an unusually blunt manner in a recent Decolonizaton Day address (the Decolonizaton Day is Bolivia's official title for the date of the discovery of America). He said that, in contrast to the recent past when Bolivian army and security officers flocked to the US diplomatic mission in La Paz as the connection used to guarantee a successful career, these days relations with the U.S. Embassy have become so bad they are "like a turd.". According to Morales, now the police and army staff fear being spotted attending the US embassy as the majority of Bolivians frown on such contacts and regard US diplomats as enemies of Bolivia. The former Bolivian governments were heavily dependent on the US which was practically able to hand out appointments within the army and police hierarchies, but the current Bolivian administration managed to put an end to the arrangement. Morales revisited the US-Bolivian relations when, next day, he spoke in Santa Cruz at the graduation ceremony for 630 Cuban-trained Bolivian medical doctors. “Over the past 50 years, the US have cultivated an asymmetrical, disrespectful, abusive and dominant relationship with Bolivia”, said Morales. He charged that Washington never wanted Bolivia on the development path and that the US imposed on his country such cooperation programs that actually impeded its progress and served to perpetuate its inferior-partner condition. Morales also touched upon the theme of the fight against drug trafficking and expressed a view that Washington's secret agenda was not aimed at defeating the drug cartels. Rather, as he explained, the US DEA felt that the flourishing of the drug business created pretexts for the US meddling and subduing – ideologically and politically – the Bolivian army and police. The US hoped to treat Bolivia as “a political pawn” while implementing an imperial doctrine and, in the settings, to grab control over Bolivia's natural resources, held Morales. Morales maintains that the prospects for the relations with the US are dire as Bolivia's nationalizations of its natural riches will stay forever on the grievances list in Washington. In the past, the US as Bolivia's lender was able to exercise political dictate, but the ill tradition was erased when Morales was propelled to power in a national vote in 2006. The US interests and the present-day Bolivian policies – sovereignty and economic independence, the socialist course, etc – are obviously impossible to reconcile. Morales is convinced that the above is the reason behind Washington's pressure and continuous conspiracy games. The Bolivian leader accuses the US of undermining the country's efforts to become a democratic nation with high levels of social justice and civil activity, and of pursuing deliberately divisive policies. US ambassador Philip Goldberg who was ejected from Bolivia a few years ago had been dispatched to the country to put into practice a destabilization program intended to ignite racial hate, to foster confrontations, and, ultimately, to provoke a civil war, said Morales, citing Goldberg's record of corrosive activities in the former Yugoslavia. Morales frequently invokes in his speeches the facts revealing the subversive role taken by the US Embassy in Bolivia. It put obstacles in the way of organizing the Bolivian national assembly and encouraged separatism in the five of Bolivia's provinces which sit on important deposits of natural reserves and contribute 75-80% of the national GDP. While a referendum demonstrated that 2/3 of Bolivians support the socioeconomic course Morales is steering, the US diplomats and agents did a huge job with a multimillion budget to plunge the country into a state of discord. USAID helped form opposition youth gangs, sponsored anti-government rallies, and planted myriads of increasingly radical NGOs in Bolivia. The US Embassy's plane was used to shift protesters to the Beni and Pando departments where they tried to block the airports and to prevent the arrival of Morales when he planned to personally help the situation revert to normalcy on site. In September, 2008, Morales declared Goldberg persona non grata over charges that the US diplomat assisted separatists in Bolivia. A bunch of CIA and DEA officers caught recruiting the Bolivian army and security staff or spying on Morales were also deported. The Bolivian security agency warned that the intensification of the US monitoring of Morales' rides could be indicative of preparations for an assassination attempt. Morales said that the ousters made it possible to get rid of the problems the US was creating to slow down the process of change in Bolivia and that he never regretted showing the US ambassador the door. It is clear though that the US Embassy remains hyperactive in Bolivia. Information surfaced that cars with US diplomatic license plates were used to transfer firearms, and the US diplomats' attempts to mobilize the Indian communities' resistance to government policies were strictly documented by the Bolivian authorities. A terrorist group comprising CIA contractors from Europe – mostly individuals with combat experience earned in the Balkan region - was intercepted during an attempt to infiltrate Bolivia. Some of the terrorists were mowed down in a raid launched by the Bolivian police and a number of others – currently stand trial after a probe which took three years. Still, 17 of the 39 members of the terrorist group escaped to the US.

The Al Saud monarchy intends to bulldoze three of the world’s oldest mosques in Medina to expand the mosque so that it can host 1.6 million pilgrims, the Independent said in a recent report.The main change will occur in the Western section of Masjid al-Nabawi, which holds the tomb of the founder of Islam, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).The three mosques, scheduled to be demolished after annual Hajj pilgrimage, including Ghamama mosque, where Prophet Mohammad is said to have given his first prayers for an Eid ceremony, are located outside the western walls of Masjid al-Nabawi.Saudi officials have not declared any plans in respect of preserving or moving the historical mosques that are covered by the Ottoman-era structures, the report added.The Saudi regime’s disregard for preserving the key historic sites and historical and archaeological heritage has provoked outrage among a group of academics, who were brave enough to challenge the Saudi monarchy on the issue.“There are ways they could expand which would either avoid or preserve the ancient Islamic sites but instead they want to knock it all down,” said Dr. Irfan al-Alawi of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation

The Washington-based (Persian) Gulf Institute says Riyadh has bulldozed 95 percent of 1,000-year-old buildings in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in the past 20 years with the aim of expanding shopping centers, sky scrapers and luxury hotels.During construction of the Jabal Omar complex in Mecca, which overshadowed Masjid al-Harram, Saudi officials destroyed many archeological sites, particularly Prophet Mohammad’s birth place and the house of Prophet’s wife, Khadijah (PBUH), turning the holy locations into library and public toilet respectively.Two of the seven key historic mosques built to mark the Battle of the Trench and a mosque belonging to the Prophet’s grandson were also dynamited ten years ago.Surprisingly, pictures of demolition of the ancient mosque taken secretly and then smuggled out of the kingdom reveals the Saudi religious police hailing and celebrating the collapse of the Islamic monument.
