US ‘irregular ops’ in the Malaysian context

While many critics of the Malaysian government dismiss its suspicion of foreign-funded civil society groups as “a desperate attempt to stifle dissent and attack civil society,” a Malaysia-based foreign journalist says there is a sound reason to perceive foreign-funded rights advocacy groups as possible threats. Writing for Mathaba, Nile Bowie claimed the existence of a secret US government document which describes how the US interferes in other countries’ political affairs in order to align them to its own interests. In a Nov 23 article entitledMalaysia: Victim of US ‘Irregular Warfare’ Ops, Bowie quotes Christof Lehmann:

This document is a step-by-step guide to how to create, manipulate, co-opt and make use of a country’s population, persons of special interest inside the country as well as expatriates, organizations inside as well as outside the country, towards a subversion. Beginning with manipulating dissent into demonstrations, the polarization of a population, riots and armed insurgencies that require action by security forces, and psychological warfare by means of media, step by step, in logical sequence, towards a full scale war, based on humanitarian principles and the pretext of bringing democracy and freedom.

States that will not align themselves with US interests are infiltrated in phases, Bowie said, beginning with the use of “foreign-funded dissident news media organizations” to influence the population. Further infiltration includes the provision of training and equipment to dissident groups, with the final aim being a transition to a government which will be more compliant with US diplomatic and economic interests. Bowie cited Libya and Syria as countries in which the model laid out in the document was used successfully. He said:

The ‘Phases of Unconventional Warfare’ described in the manual exactly match the US protocol undertaken in both Libya and Syria. While Malaysia is very different from Syria and Libya, the agitation Malaysia has experienced is not intended to promote a genuine democratic framework. Its purpose is the gradual installation of a national government that is friendly to US interests by coaxing social unrest and shaping popular sentiment. Evidence of such tactics can be seen in the activities of several foreign organisations in Malaysia, including the US-based National Democratic Institute and George Soros’ Open Society Institute, which have both funded Malaysian elections watchdog Bersih; the National Endowment for Democracy, which provides funding to human rights group SUARAM and pro-opposition news website Malaysiakini; and the International Republican Institute, chaired by John McCain, an ardent supporter of USraeli militarism, which receives funding from the NED for its activities in Malaysia.

Although the Najib Razak administration has begun to move away from Mahathir’s administrative model by relaxing controls on expression, many still feel more can be done. The authorities have acknowledged that more could be done to reduce voting irregularities, and have begun to work toward such ends. To accuse Malaysia’s electoral system of being illegitimate is a cinematic exaggeration, a myth pushed by foul Western endowments and foundations. If the US is pursuing the kind of policy described in the Unconventional Warfare manual, one can understand how foreign-funded rights advocacy groups may be perceived as threatening to Malaysian authorities, regardless of the politics and values they preach.

Pro-Israel groups rooting for the opposition

Amid news on Malaysian NGOs receiving foreign funds, Nile Bowie wrote on the involvement of pro-Israeli organisations with Malaysia’s opposition coalition. In an in-depth report, the Kuala Lumpur-based blogger wrote on how these foreign funds is a way for the infiltration of US interests. Bowie wrote:

As the US continues to militarily increase its presence in the Pacific region inline with its strategic policy shift to East Asia, Washington’s leaders would like to see compliant heads of state who will act to further US interests in the ASEAN region.

While allegations of corruption and economic mismanagement hinder the credibility of current PM Najib Razak, foreign organizations affiliated with AIPAC and funded by the US government have contributed support toward bolstering the influence and status of Malaysia’s opposition groups, in addition to the controversial Bersih coalition for electoral reform, led by Ambiga Sreenevasan, who admitted that two US organisations, the National Democratic Institute and the Open Society Institute, funded Bersih but for other projects unrelated to the Jul 9 march. Soros founded the Open Society Institute in 1993, whose principle aim sought to “strengthen open society principles and practices against authoritarian regimes and the negative consequences of globalization,” with an emphasis on countries in transition from communism after the fall of the Soviet Union. Former US Sec State Madeline Albright chairs the National Democratic Institute, while its president Kenneth Wollack served as the legislative director of AIPAC. Bowie writes:

Although the organization boasts of “promoting democracy” and “fortifying civil society” around the world, these tired euphemisms have been used in numerous countries to mask funding to various political forces opposed to their national governments and aligned with US interests. In addition to providing funding to the Bersih coalition through the National Democratic Institute, the National Endowment for Democracy’s Malaysian operation provided $100k for political news website Malaysiakini, considered to be the nation’s most pro-opposition news outlet. NED also provided $90k to SUARAM, an organization promoting human rights. The most significant recipient of NED’s Malaysia programs is the International Republican Institute, which receives $802,122/yr and is tasked to “work with state leaders in Penang and Selangor to provide them with public opinion research, training and other resources to enable them to be more effective representatives of their constituents.” Penang and Selangor are strongholds of the opposition coalition led by Anwar Ibrahim. It comes as little surprise that Ibrahim talks boldly of a “Malaysian Spring,” as the same organizations bolstering the opposition in Kuala Lumpur have successfully fomented events that led to the series of uprisings across the Arab World in 2011.

Anwar Ibrahim maintains close ties with senior US officials and organizations such as the National Endowment for Democracy. In Jul 2006, Ibrahim chaired the Washington-based Foundation for the Future, established and funded by the US State Dept at the behest of Elizabeth Cheney, whose father was recently convicted in absentia for war crimes for his issuance of torture during the Iraq war by Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission, chaired by former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamed. In 2007, Ibrahim was a panelist at the National Endowment for Democracy’s “Democracy Award” event in Washington. These questionable affiliations raise strong concerns over the legitimacy of the candidate and the administration he would lead if winning the 13th General Election.

What is happening in eastern DR Congo is not a civil war, but continuation of a 16-year aggression by the country’s two neighbours, financed and directed by the United States and Britain. All the signs are written on the wall that after the split of Sudan, the United States of America is targeting the Democratic Republic of Congo to re-enact the same scenario: arming the Tutsi regime of Rwanda and Uganda to the teeth to occupy eastern Congo for some time, first of all to extract its strategic minerals which the Western economies in crisis desperately need, and then annex it to Rwanda and Uganda. The family of a US intelligence agent that mysteriously died in 1953 has filed a lawsuit that accuses the CIA of committing murder.The sons of deceased CIA officer Frank Olson allege in a lawsuit this week that their father was killed on the job nearly 60 years ago, despite the Central Intelligence Agency’s lost-standing claim that the death was a suicide.Frank Olson was found dead outside the New York City Statler Hotel after what was originally described as a jump from the thirteenth floor carried out by his own accord. Joining Syria Rebels, 20 Lebanese Killed in Tal Kalakh

More than 20 Lebanese extremists were killed Saturday in an ambush by the Syrian army in the Syrian town of Tal Kalakh.

In details, a security source told AFP that he had been informed of the death of the men who went to Syria, in a group of 30 persons, to fight with the rebels and were all killed in a trap in Homs province."Meanwhile, an extremist leader from Tripoli confirmed to the agency that "the men come from different parts of the city and had and were killed in an ambush in Tal Kalakh by the Syrian Army."According to the sources, men originated from the Northern towns of Bab al-Tabbane and Mankoubeen.Most of the dead are from the Obeid and Srour families.For its part, as-Safir Lebanese daily learned that the group infiltrated from the North along with other nationalities toward the Syrian town, Tal Kalakh.
"The group stayed in a house belonging to a Syrian opposition leader, in preparation for being transferred to the Syrian depth to participate in a previously planned attack against the Syrian army," the daily mentioned.However, according to as-Safir, the surprise surfaced when the Syrian army preceded the group's arrival by an ambush in the same place."This led to the death of 22 men and the capture of three, while, one was able to escape," sources told the daily.In parallel, al-Akhbar highlighted that "When they reached the town of Halat near Tal Kalakh, they fell in an armed ambush, which led to a clash with Syrian troops".It further mentioned that "the number of Lebanese who were killed in Syria during the fighting along with the armed opposition exceeded two hundred. However, no media fuss was raised around them, because they were killed individually or in small numbers.""The bodies of 14 young men are detained in Tal Kalakh," it added.

The exploits of Future MP Okab Sakr have not been limited to providing arms to Syrian opposition fighters. The recordings obtained by al-Akhbar have also shed light on his pivotal role in closely following up on military operations in Syria, even personally leading military operations rooms spread throughout Turkey and Lebanon. The source who provided al-Akhbar with the incriminating Hariri-Sakr phone recordings, a former associate who worked in one of Sakr’s military centers in Turkey, had one condition for releasing the rest of the recordings:

The first batch of recordings contained enough evidence to establish the involvement of former PM Saad Hariri and Future Movement MP Okab Sakr in the ongoing bloody conflict in Syria. As al-Akhbar revealed yesterday, Sakr and Hariri have not only been providing weapons and logistical support to the armed Syrian opposition; they have also been directing military operations remotely, and apparently using the Syrian civil war to pursue their own interests, with little or no thought for the collateral damage. While the source confirmed that he remains in the Syrian opposition camp “fighting against the oppressive regime,” he said:

Now I’m wanted by both sides.

The source backed up his claims of association with Sakr by providing al-Akhbar with private photos of the Future MP taken in several locations, and spoke in detail about events he witnessed over the span of more than a year working with Sakr in the so-called “revolutionary operations rooms” in Turkey. The source explained the nature of these rooms, and the kind of people who are often present there or who oversee them, saying:

Leaders from the armed Syrian opposition meet periodically there with Okab Sakr, as well as with representatives from Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. The representatives often provide input and sometimes even instructions and general guidance. For example, a representative could weigh in on the need to deliver the appropriate type of ammunition to a certain location, especially since many mistakes have been made in this regard. On one occasion, for example, ammunition for Russian-made “Val” assault rifles was sent to combatants who were only equipped with Kalashnikov rifles. For this reason, shipments are now double-checked to ensure that the right consignment goes to the right place, and that the ammunition dispatched matches the weapons sent previously. Later on, instructions were given to rig supply trucks transporting weapons with explosives that can be detonated in the event they are captured or ambushed. The strict measures in place include disciplining anyone responsible for losing a single bullet or shell. There are operations rooms in Lebanon as well, actively involved in the Syrian revolution, directly linked to Turkey. Six Syrians, in addition to a number of Lebanese, run one such room in north Lebanon. Syrian leaders who come to Lebanon are usually received at a villa in the Mount Lebanon area of Faqra. On one of my visits to Lebanon, along with other young men, I stayed there. We all received cash payments, and it was common to say that one was going to or coming back from Faqra each time we were going to get paid a large sum. A retired Lebanese officer who had visited Turkey on a number of occasions is in charge of running this office. He will often contact the operations room in Turkey to inquire about arms shipments dispatched to certain areas in Syria. Okab instructed us to do whatever this officer asked. For wire transfers, Okab uses a money transfer company that conducts most of its transactions illegally and untraceably.

Concerning Sakr’s ties to the Lutfallah II, a ship seized in north Lebanon carrying weapons from Libya, the source confirmed that members from the Syrian National Council were involved in the smuggling in agreement with Libyan figures and Colonel Malik al-Kurdi. He denied any involvement by Sakr or the retired officer mentioned above, however, and said that Sakr was “furious” that day and accused the SNC of having been infiltrated by the Syrian government. The source also distinguished between the head of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces Information Branch, the late Wissam al-Hassan, and Sakr, over the manner in which each man treated others, saying:

Hassan gave so much to the revolution. He often intervened to help and release those who were arrested for smuggling weapons. Hassan sometimes also met with Syrians who were sent to Lebanon, and he had a role in smuggling out the French journalists who were trapped in Homs. But Okab dealt vindictively with those around him. Whenever he got angry with anyone, he would send them to a combat battalion in the front lines, whether in Homs or Aleppo. Three young men who were working with me ended up dying on these missions. Hussam Qaddour, also known as Abu-Fadel, was a young man who acted as an arms procurement officer for rebels in Latakia. Okab asked Abu-Fadel to bring back footage of rockets being fired in the Haffa region, knowing full well that the regime troops in the area had radars and guided missiles and immediately responded to the location of rocket fire. Okab sent him to his death. Ambulances usually arrive within half an hour, but on that day, it took them three hours to arrive. He came back carried on a stretcher, and remains to this day in intensive care.

In today’s installment, al-Akhbar has published the transcript of a phone conversation with an unidentified man who inquires about anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, in addition to requesting the delivery of machine guns, machine gun bullets, and RPG rounds. Audio experts could not confirm the identity of the second person. While one expert affirmed it was Saad Hariri, others disagreed.

Okab Sakr: Hello.
UV: Yes, brother.
OS: Yes.
UV: What is required? What do you need?
OS: We need machine guns, bullets, PKC [machine gun] bullets, RPG rounds, and more advanced weapons for Aleppo, the Aleppo countryside, and the Idlib region.
UV: Which areas specifically?
OS: Aleppo and the Aleppo countryside, [and] Azaz and the surrounding regions. There are areas under siege in Idlib; a number of areas are coming under intense attack at present. The order needs to be delivered as quickly as possible.
UV: Okay, but what advanced weapons specifically?
OS: I don’t know. Nothing specific. But the order basically [consists of] anti-aircraft and anti-tank [weapons], along with ordinary or light to medium weapons.
UV: Okay, Okay.

Third Recording: Sakr and Mokdad in the Operations Room

Louai al-Mokdad (spokesperson for the Higher Council of the Free Syrian Army): Welcome, welcome dear, wa alaikum assalam, how are you?

AR: Mr Louai?

LM: Yes, how are you doing?

AR: How are you?

LM: May Allah bless you and protect you, what’s new at your end?

AR: Where are you people?

OS: Did your situation deteriorate more? More than yesterday and the past two days?

AR: By God, the shelling against us intensified a lot [as well as] the clashes. The situation is very urgent. We urgently need help.

OS: Ok, where are you, in Hama? In Idlib?

AR: Hama and Idlib.

OS: Do you need us to increase the quantities? You mean the quantities we sent are not sufficient?

AR: Yes, yes, increase the quantities.

LM (speaking to OS in the room): What do you think, should we increase the quantities?

OS: No, no, let’s [definitely] increase the quantities.

OS (to AR): I, Abu Rashad, have received many reports from inside from a number of the men, all saying the same thing, that the [intensity] of the situation will increase. Now I will instruct the men to increase the quantities by as much as possible, because I am aware of the situation you are in. You are heavily compromised.

LM: I will put you immediately on the lists. Now, immediately, the men will put you on the lists. Don’t worry.

Erdogan’s phony anti-Israel rhetoric

Erdogan’s Cairo visit took place in the midst of Israel’s eight-day war on Gaza. Notwithstanding his habitual posturing over Israel’s war crimes, the focal point of his speech at Cairo University was Syria:

This carnage the Syrian people have been subjected to is a disgrace not only to the Syrian Regime, but also to the international community and the whoke of humanity. Sooner or later there will be a holding to account for the massacre of these innocent children.

The fact remains that for the past 20 years, Turkey, Israel and NATO have maintained a high level of military and political cooperation against Iraq, Iran, Syria and the resistance groups in Palestine and Lebanon. Furthermore, since Apr 2011, the Erdogan government has been thoroughly complicit in NATO’s war crimes in Syria. Erdogan met Ehud Olmert in Ankara on Dec 22 2007. Five days later, Israel launched a war on Gaza. Towards the end of the three-week-long war, in a speech at his party’s parliamentary group meeting, Erdogan said:

The Greater Middle East Project was an initiative launched with a view to peace for the Middle East as well as promoting its economic development, civil rights, women’s rights and freedom of education and carrying these rights further. Turkey was given a role in this project and we have accepted.

After the ceasefire, Erdogan launched his famous ‘outburst’ at Shimon Peres during the World Economic Forum.  Only two weeks later, hemade the following remarks in an interview with the Turkish daily Sabah:

Our relations with Israel continue based on mutual interests. Those who leave the table in fury return to it with losses. Some have suggested that we end Israeli training flights in Konya. The truth is that not just Israel but ten countries pay to receive flight training in Konya. Indeed, our General Staff also announced that relations with Israel will continue in accordance with Turkey’s interests. Military contracts and orders also remain in force. There are many agreements with Israel, old and new. These all remain in force. We have to be very careful in interstate relations. The Israeli state and the Israeli people are separate issues. I always say that anti-Semitism is a crime against humanity. I thanked Mr Peres for his efforts to defeat a bill in the US House of Representatives that defines the incidents of 1915 from an Armenian perspective. I sincerely hope that Peres’ visit to Ankara will contribute to peace in the Middle East. The speeches to be delivered by Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Turkish parliament on Tuesday will contribute to peace in the Middle East.

Two months before Peres’ visit, in an ultimate act of war, Israeli jets used Turkey’s airspace to launch a bombing raid on the Syrian territory. To this day, Erdogan has remained silent about this incident. On Jun 10 2005, Erdogan received the ADL’s ‘Courage to Care’ awardfrom Abe Foxman in New York. In accepting this award, suppoosedly on behalf of diplomats who saved Jews during the Holocaust, Erdogan strongly condemned anti-Semitism and stressed his country’s close relationship with the modern State of Israel. On the same day,Erdogan told the NYT:

Turkey cannot in any way approve of oppressive regimes, and at this point there is nothing Turkey can take as an example from Syria, while there is lots that Syria can take as examples from Turkey.

Erdogan said that the Turkish government views anti-Semitism as a crime against humanity. He invited Ariel Sharon to visit Turkey.]  Ahead of this, he held talks with Moshe Katsav. Erdogan was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Katsav’s office:

We have to drain the swamp of terrorism. We have to show solidarity in our common war against terrorism.

Back in Oct 2002, in a campaign speech delivered six months prior to his first electoral win, Erdogan had said:

Sharon is unleashing state terrorism upon Palestine. Sharon must be prosecuted just like Milosevic was, in The Hague.

But in his speech at the ADL award ceremony, Erdogan echoed Bush 43 and Bliar, saying:

Today, with the presentation of the ‘Profile of Courage’ award to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey by the USAian Jewish Congress at the New York building of HSBC, there is a strong message being conveyed to the archaic terrorist mentality. We will not tolerate terrorism, and we will act in solidarity to wipe it from the face of the earth. Our country is against all forms of terrorism, and we wholeheartedly support the US in its efforts in combating international terrorism.

Targeting two synagogues, the HSBC bank and the British Embassy, the Nov 2003 bomb attacks in Istanbul bear the hallmarks of an al-Qaeda false-flag operation. Finland’s Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Pertti Salolainen asserted on Thursday that US Jews have vast control over the wealth and media in the US and that impedes the US government from remaining neutral toward the Palestinians. Salolainen’s remarks sparked sharp criticism from the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Finnish media watchdog website Tundra Tabloids. While discussing the UNGA vote to upgrade the PLO to non-member observer state status on the state television program YLE Aamu TV, Salolainen said:

Now about the US, it finds it difficult to take a more neutral stance on the Israel-Palestine issue because they have a large Jewish population who have a significant control of the money and the media. The US for internal political reasons is afraid to become adequately involved. This is a sad truth about US politics.

That such remarks can come from a pillar of the political elite in Finland is dismaying and astonishing; but that this remark was unchallenged makes it appear that such ideas are part of acceptable discourse in Finland. Finland joined the International Task Force for Holocaust Education, Research and Remembrance, and it must act immediately to show that it remains committed to these ideals, by officially condemning and repudiating Salolainen’s remarks. It must also take steps to remove him from all his official positions.

NATO has launched a new military base in Turkey's western province of Izmir as the western alliance plans to deploy advanced Patriot missiles on Turkish border with Syria.
