The Lebanese Army Command warned Friday of suspicious foreign security apparatuses attempting to collect information, hack computers, and accede to Bulk SMS, in order to recruit collaborators. "This constitutes a violation of national sovereignty and tampering with citizens' security and individual freedoms," a communiqué by the Army's Guidance Directorate said today. "The Command warns the citizens of bids to lure them into such traps and calls them to notify the Army in case they receive any suspicious message on informing@lebarmy.gov.lb."

Army finds 7 mortar shells in Zaffata

The Lebanese army found 7 mortar shells placed in a black bag in the area of Zaffata, at the banks of Litani River- Zrareyeh town, NNA Correspondent reported. The 60 millimeters mortar shells carry Hebrew writings on them, and are not intended for explosion. A Lebanese army engineering unit transferred the mortar shells from their location.

March 14 calls for seizing opportunity of change

March 14 forces' General Secretariat organized on Monday a "friendship meeting" at its headquarters in Ashrafieh, in presence of a panel of opposition figures and journalists. Obama signs law against Iran-LatAm relations
US President Barack Obama has enacted a legislation aimed at countering Iran’s growing relations with the Latin American countries. - The “Countering Iran in Western Hemisphere Act” [?] which was signed into law on Friday, requires the State Department to develop a strategy within 180 days to “address Iran's growing hostile presence and activity” in Latin America. Colombia emerald czar linked to AUC massacre: Declassified US cables
US NATIONAL ARCHIVES- Lifting the Veil on Colombia's "Emerald Czar" U.S. Embassy cable from 1991 characterizes Carranza as a "big-time narco"
A notorious Colombian emerald dealer is accused of perpetrating a massacre of 12 people in southern Colombia in 1997, local media reported on Thursday.According to a declassified United States government report, Victor Carranza, also known as "The Emerald Czar" because of his control over emerald exploitation in Colombia, was accused of facilitating a massacre in Miraflores with the help of the right-wing paramilitary group AUC. The accusations in the report were backed up by a former AUC member, Fredy Rendon Herrera, alias "El Aleman," Caracol Radio reported. The U.S. report stated that a former paramilitary leader, going under the alias "Clodomiro Agami", suspiciously similar to "Clodomiro Agamez", the alias used by Carranza, "freely admitted that he and men under his command were responsible for the October, 1997 killings in Miraflores." However, the report does not explicitly state that Carranza nor Clodomiro Agamez was the mastermind.The report gets even murkier when it notes that the Colombian army, which was rife with corruption and AUC supporters at the time, allowed paramilitaries to travel to a remote airport with the intention of carrying out the killings. Gaza man killed in Syria was 'Qassam commander'
A Palestinian man who was killed in Syria on Friday was a senior figure in Hamas' armed wing, rebels and Hamas officials said Saturday.Muhammad Qunneita, 31, from Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, had been in Syria for four months, his brother told Ma'an.Rebels told Reuters on Saturday Qunneita was killed in fighting around Aleppo airport where he had been helping to train Arab and Muslim fighters. He had trained several rebel brigades during his time in Syria, and was fatally wounded during the storming of Idlib airport on Thursday, the report said.But a Hamas source in Gaza told Reuters Qunneita had left the Hamas brigade and joined a jihadi group before leaving for Syria to fight there.

The Balkanization of Iran
This is why the response to Iran’s nuclear program won’t just be surgical strikes. In the short term, a surgical strike or any other military action aimed at destabilizing Iran and setting back its atomic aims will do exactly that, but it will not curb Iran’s two main resources- human capital in the form of knowledge and raw material wealth. This is where separatism comes into play. The majority of Iran’s oil and gas resources are located in the Khuzestan and Hormozgan provinces, home to many ethnic Arabs. Another large chunk of oil and gas is located near and within the Caspian Sea; areas inhabited by ethnic Azeris. Any policy of providing a mortal blow to Iran will factor in ethnic tensions and the creation of new nation-states from the mammoth corpse of what used to be known as Iran. The establishment of a Kurdish Republic of Mahabad was one of the efforts put into separatism, and while unsuccessful, it demonstrated that with enough foreign funding and support, an independent republic carved out of one of Iran’s minority-held provinces is feasible and beneficial for multiple parties. A resourceless Iran poses no threat to Arab states, the increasing regional power of Azerbaijan, nor the struggling states of Pakistan and Afghanistan. And without such resources, Iran doesn’t stand a chance at mobilizing its human capital in nation-strengthening efforts that could potentially pose a threat.Any formation of an Arab state from Southwestern Iran would serve the goal of limiting Iran’s coastline in the Gulf and resource wealth. It would be eagerly supported by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Kingdoms, and with enough repression from Iran, will evoke international support. This will effectively cripple Iran as a nation and plunge it into Afghanistan-grade poverty within several generations. The question of Azerbaijan remains. While separatists and pan-Turkists declare that Iranian Azeris suffer discrimination, facts on the ground hold otherwise. Azeris serve high positions in Iranian society and politics, and enjoy lifestyles similar to ethnic Persians. Furthermore, the historical link of the land of Azerbaijan (northern and southern) is part and parcel of Iranian history. The Land of Fire was the hub of Zoroastrianism and Persian culture for eons. It is unclear whether separatism will take hold as a popular sentiment in Iranian Azerbaijan. It is greatly dependent on how well the Republic of Azerbaijan in the north does in the coming years, as it fosters greater relations with the United States and Europe. If standard of living and economic mobility in the country rise simultaneously as quality of life, political and social repression, and economic rot plague Iran, the desire to join their brothers in the north will increase. And why would international players be apprehensive about this option in the long run? The momentary instability that will rise from carving new states out of Iranian territory is a tradeoff that pales in comparison the the benefits of stronger trading partners in the area, the goodwill of neighboring countries, and the loss of the threat to oil flow in the Gulf and the Caucasus. An Iran without Kurdistan, Azerbaijan, and Khuzestan will be an immobile and poverty-stricken land. The secession of barren Baluchistan will also rob Iran of its rich mineral resources. The goal is to ensure Iran will never pose a threat to international interests in the Middle East- without the resources and strategic advantages it holds, it will never be able to pose such a threat again. Minority groups may be apprehensive- they may hold the belief that they have greater opportunities as Iranians in socioeconomic mobility, yet a concerted support and funding effort from the international community can dissolve such apprehension at the prospect of separation.Iran is “The Land of the Aryans” much as Yugoslavia was the land of the Slavs. It does not have a consistent national identity that rests on three pillars- language, ethnicity, and religion. Thus far, religion is the tie that binds many Iranians, and to an extent, language. This is why Iran is adamant on excluding Azeri and Kurdish as national tongues, as such moves may dissolve Iranian national unity. A state without a national identity resting on the aforementioned pillars provides a tempting opportunity for more powerful players to play the ethnic tension card. In this sense, whatever Iranian government in power must learn to adeptly play at identity politics and mitigate the forces of separatism and ethnic division. Thus far, all of Iran’s governments have done poorly in mitigating these differences, often resulting in crises and near-losses for the nation state of Iran. As Iran’s tension with the international community grows, a dismembered Land of the Aryans continues to become a very real possibility in our lifetime.

Iran Fears May Be Compelling Saudi Arabia to Begin to Tell the Truth About Israel
[[[[[If there were a prize for the Arab country that has done most to promote Arab-Israeli peace recently, I'd seriously consider nominating Saudi Arabia.]]]]] Admittedly, that's a counterintuitive choice: Riyadh doesn't even recognize Israel and shows no signs of doing so anytime soon; moreover, it finances the spread of extremist Islamic ideology. But Saudi-funded papers have been doing something that may be far more important than another handshake on the White House lawn: providing a platform for Arab journalists and public figures to challenge the dominant Middle Eastern narrative of Israel as the root of all evil.Consider, for instance, a column published last month in Asharq Al-Awsat, a paper owned by a member of the Saudi royal family and known for its support of the Saudi monarchy. Written by the paper's then-deputy editor-in-chief, Adel Al Toraifi, and titled "Who holds Hamas' terrorism to account?" the column blamed not Israel, but Hamas, for Palestinian casualties during both the second intifada and the recent fighting in Gaza.
During the intifada, wrote Al Toraifi, "Only a small number of Palestinians died in the first weeks." But then, "Hamas and other factions decided to militarize the intifada through the use of suicide attacks, costing the Palestinians nearly 2,000 lives in less than two years."Similarly, when smaller factions began "sabotaging the truce in Gaza," Hamas "did not condemn their attacks, rather its leaders talked about the victory that was achieved through the missile fire." Consequently, "a hundred Palestinians have died and what remains of the dilapidated infrastructure there has been destroyed."Now contrast this with the reaction of Israel's "peace partner," Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas. In his speech to the UN last month, Abbas accused Israel of committing "barbaric and horrific" crimes in Gaza in retaliation for ... his UN bid! The thousands of missiles launched at Israel weren't even mentioned, much less condemned. And other senior PA officials openly praised the missile fire. Moreover, the two Arab states with which Israel has peace treaties, Egypt and Jordan, similarly accused Israel of unprovoked aggression while refusing to condemn the rocket fire.In short, all told their people that Israel is simply an evil country that kills innocent Arabs for no good reason. And why would anyone make peace with a country like that?Al Toraifi, in contrast, told his readers that Israel isn't inherently evil; it was just responding to being attacked. He also told his readers that Palestinians aren't wholly innocent; their behavior, too, will have to change for peace to be possible. These are obviously messages far more conducive to peace.
An even more remarkable column appeared in October in another Saudi-funded paper, Arab News. Written by a former commodore in the Saudi navy, it posed a heretical question: "whether Israel is the real enemy of the Arab world and the Arab people." Abdulateef Al-Mulhim's answer was unequivocal:"The Arab world wasted hundreds of billions of dollars and lost tens of thousands of innocent lives fighting Israel," he wrote. "The Arab world has many enemies and Israel should have been at the bottom of the list. The real enemies of the Arab world are corruption, lack of good education, lack of good health care, lack of freedom, lack of respect for the human lives and finally, the Arab world had many dictators who used the Arab-Israeli conflict to suppress their own people. Israel bars prisoner studies on grounds that most popular course is ‘Genocide’

More than a year ago, Israel decided to end course instruction for prisoners at the Open University of Israel in an effort to pressure Hamas to release Gilad Shalit. Then Shalit was released in an exchange, but Israel has maintained the policy, no courses for prisoners. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel has been fighting the decision. And below is the translation of a comment by Dan Yakir of ACRI, thanks to Ofer Neiman:On Dec 24, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by prisoners classified as “security prisoners” against the decision to deny them studies at the Israeli Open University. At first the decision was applied only in the case of Palestinian security prisoners (residents of the OT, as well as Israeli citizens), 200 of whom are studying at the Open University. When the Israeli Prison Service realized it would be impossible to defend the discrimination between Palestinian security prisoners and Jewish prisoners in court, it terminated the studies of the only Jewish security prisoner who was studying at the time. In a response submitted by the State Attorney Office, one of the arguments was that the most popular course among security prisoners was “Genocide”, and that this spoke for itself. I asked the Open University’s attorney after the hearing whether it was true that the course taught its students how to commit genocide, and she denied this vigorously.It is a well-written course which many students at the Open University praise. In a whirlwind of legal arguments, wrestling and threats to change the law to make it easier to disqualify Knesset candidates, the High Court of Justice on Thursday heard Balad MK Hanin Zoabi’s petition to be reinstated for the current campaign. Zoabi was disqualified by the Central Elections Committee last week, in a 19-9 vote, despite Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein recommending that she be allowed to run. The committee approved the ban on the grounds that Zoabi supported terrorism and rejected Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Seconds after she walked out of the Jerusalem courtroom at the close of Thursday’s hearing, MK Michael Ben-Ari and Itamar Ben-Gvir joined some 30 rightwing activists accosting and trying to block Zoabi and her entourage from leaving the Supreme Court building. Activists started yelling at Zoabi, and a number of them physically engaged with security personnel trying to escort her out. Activists began pushing the guards and Zoabi’s entourage, who pushed back in a free-for-all that lasted more than 10 minutes. Since it appeared impossible for Zoabi to exit the building, she was smuggled into one of the other courtrooms until the building’s main hall was cleared.The state representative reiterated its support for Zoabi running, since what it called her disturbing behavior did not meet the evidentiary standard for disqualification set by a High Court decision in 2003. The justices, who were unusually quiet, briefly got into a debate with the state about whether it was significant that IHH had been defined by the Defense Ministry as an illegal organization as early as 2008, even though it was not declared a terrorist organization until four years later. After the hearing and the altercation between the rightwing activists, Zoabi’s entourage and court security, Ben-Ari made a fiery speech, saying:If they don’t disqualify Zoabi today, tomorrow she’ll throw a bomb in the Knesset. They need to throw them into Syria.Shortly after exiting the courthouse through a side exit, Zoabi also held a press conference, saying:I never imagined such a thing could happen. I feel that there has been incitement against me throughout the current Knesset, so there’s nothing new. It’s ironic that in a debate about equality I had to leave through the back door for my own safety. Attempts to disqualify me are an attack on everybody who is against the occupation.Balad party chairman Jamal Zahalka, who also spoke at the press conference, said they had been set upon by a “group of fascists,” and blamed court security for the incident. Earlier in the day, Likud MK Danon told the JPost that if the court allowed Zoabi to run for the next Knesset, he had a Plan B prepared: amending the law to prevent future runs. Danon, who led the move to disqualify Zoabi, said he believed he could win in the High Court, despite the fact that it had never disqualified an Arab MK before.
