But isn’t Israel afraid of Al-Qaeda presence in the tormented Syria? The idea is scary and Al-Qaeda is the West’s bogeyman but not Israel’s. Al-Qaeda avoids the confrontation with Israelis despite its numerous anti-Jewish rants. Israel knows that Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, Hamas, nor the previous Palestinian red factions such as Abu Nidal and the Popular Front are threatening its security; they were just a source nuisance. The balance of power is always in Israel’s favor as the Jewish state always wins the war in the end. Israel has also fortified itself through building secure borders. Israel has built a long fence separating the West Bank and will build another one with Egypt. It will also build “Israel’s great wall” from the Golan’s side, separating Israel and Syria.Tel Aviv did not release any information or suggestion regarding its role in Syria, but we know that this is the most serious war on its borders and it directly affects its security. Therefore, it is impossible for Israel to stand still. Little has been said after Israeli leader’s return from Russia. Israeli President Shimon Peres said that they were against any foreign military intervention, but at the same time, they supported the idea of sending Arab troops to enforce peace in Syria! Peres certainly knows that the international intervention needs one week to topple Assad’s regime, but the Arab intervention will make the war last for years. This absurd notion of sending Arab troops — also recommended by Arab League — doesn’t identity which Arab troops, or how they will be send.Possible scenarios: I imagine that Israel is influenced by the Western and Russian opinion in dealing with the events in Syria. It is probably behind the renunciation of their interests and threats regarding Assad regime. Israelis see four possibilities for ending the Syrian tragedy: First, the fall of the regime and the establishment of an alternative drained regime by the opposition on a destroyed and scorched territory. The second possibility is the fall of the regime with the ongoing civil war and without a strong central government, similar to Somalia. The third possibility is that Assad and his clique will flee to the coast and will announce the separation and the establishment of an Allawite mini-state, and thus the battles between the Syrians will continue. The last possibility, unlikely to happen, is that the situation will remain as it is and Assad will stay in Damascus and the opposition will be fighting against him; this situation will loiter for a very long time.
These four possibilities serve Israel. The option that does not suit Israel was the international intervention a year ago and toppling Assad’s regime and the establishment of a new one to be internationally supported based on democracy. Israel knows that this will make Syria a stronger neighbor, since it has a population three times larger than Israel’s and especially if it is endorsed with a real popular regime.

LEBANON WATCH- Rifai: Hay al Selom explosion outcome of security exposure
"Loyalty to the Resistance" bloc member, Deputy Kamel Rifai, said that Hay al Selom explosion was an outright result of security exposure in Lebanon and weapon chaos in all the regions. "There are groups that exploit the two issues above to achieve political gains through security incidents," the MP told "Fajr" radio on Tuesday. The MP accused those who tried to transfer strife from one place to another of being behind the blast. He did not rule out that the latest incident would be individual, stressing need to wait for investigations outcome. "Overpopulation as a result of Syrian refugees flow to Lebanon has led to a kind of chaos," the MP confirmed. He pointed that Hezbollah did not prevent the security apparatuses from reaching the scene of the blast. "Hezbollah usually cordons off any blast scene at the beginning, just in case there is another explosion," Rifai stressed. The MP called on all sides to support the security forces and to allow them to enter all the regions to fulfill their duties. Remilitarization Gives Rise to New Tensions and Violence in Guatemala

On October 6, the Guatemalan army gunned down six indigenous protesters in Totonicapán and injured at least 30 more. Thousands had gathered to oppose unpopular government reforms, and while the police held their distance, the military advanced and shot into the crowd.The event was a tragic manifestation of one of the public’s worst fears since President Pérez Molina took office in January 2012: that the Guatemalan armed forces would resort to deadly force in order to repress and silence dissent, anexperienceall too familiar in the nation´s collective historic memory.Pérez Molina(TRAINED AT US SCHOOL OF AMERICAS/ASSASSINS)has made no secret of his intention to deploy the armed forces in ever-greater numbers and ever-expanding roles - the military now overwhelmingly dominates citizen security initiatives. Whether walking down Guatemala City’s central avenue, the “Sexta,” or driving on any major highway, Guatemalans are once again likely to encounter soldiers patrolling with semi-automatic rifles or checking papers at military roadblocks.The government has opened at least five new military bases and outposts since the beginning of 2012, and has sent soldiers to fight drug cartels, to protect historic sites and nature reserves, and to back up the police during evictions and protests. Soldiers have also been deployed en masse to reduce crime in Guatemala City´s poorest neighborhoods.Seeing soldiers on the streets may not new in Guatemala, but under Pérez Molina, it has become symbolic of his administration’s approach to governance; and for the first time in over 15 years, current and former military personnel permeate the leadership of civilian institutions and dictate the administration’s approach to governance.This swift remilitarization is deeply controversial, and the reasons behind it are much more complex than first meet the eye.In fact, some argue that the motivation for militarization has little to do with providing security for Guatemalan citizens – instead, it is about protecting the status quo, ensuring impunity for the armed forces and defending multinational economic investments. The US government has been eager to offer support to the Guatemalan military, despite the problematic implications.The Remilitarization of Guatemalan Institutions
The dramatic images of thousands of heavily armed soldiers in Guatemala City are shocking and troublesome, yet the remilitarization of Guatemala today isn’t simply about more soldiers on the streets. It also refers to something much less visible –an institutional culture disturbingly similar to the counter-insurgency model that dominated during the internal armed conflict.Numerous governmental agencies are now run by former military, including the Interior Ministry and offices within the National Civilian Police and intelligence services. According to Guatemalan security analysts, upwards of 40% of security-related positions are held by former military, including many who were directly involved in the counter-insurgency campaigns; some have even been named in cases before Guatemalan courts for their role in crimes against humanity during the conflict.Many of these policymakers, including Pérez Molina himself, hail from the generation of armed forces that was active during genocide campaigns such as Operation Sofia; a generation that participated in the extermination of entire villages, that used rape as a tool of war, and justified the use of torture and brutality in their campaigns against civilian, mostly indigenous, communities. This is the generation taught to believe that anyone who rejected existing structures of racism, economic dominance by a minority elite, and political exclusion, were “subversives”, “guerrillas,” “terrorists” and “internal enemies.”Emboldened by the administration’s fierce pro-military stance, retired members of the military and other ultraconservative and fanatically nationalistic groups have launched their own campaigns in the press and social media, sending direct,and very public, threats to those who seek justice and defend human rights.As Guatemala spirals back into a reality frighteningly reminiscent of the 1980s, those who have become the intentional or collateral victims of remilitarization find themselves with little support from state institutions. Nevertheless, indigenous communities, activists and other civil society organizations –despite fear of repression or retaliation –continue to denounce remilitarization in all its forms. They recognize that the way forward for Guatemala is not to be found by returning to the nefarious practices of the past.

Sabotaging CELAC : The US and Sweden

The governments of the United States and Sweden are conniving directly with an extreme-right wing network in Latin America in a move to sabotage the summit meeting in Santiago de Chile of Heads of State from the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). To do so they are working with the CIA and the most reactionary elements of the anti-Cuban mafia in Miami.

This week the Chilean Crónica Digital news outlet reported that the Swedish embassy in Santiago and the extreme-right wing Centre for Openness and Development in Latin America (CADAL), an Argentine think tank, with the help, needless to say, of the US embassy, prepared for January 24th, two days before the summit begins, an event called“Promoting International Democratic Solidarity” with the main objective of attacking the Cuban Revolution and Cuba's President Raul Castro.The fundamental objectives of this event seem to be to create a problem for Chilean President Sebastian Piñera while trying to skew the summit climate away from any serious discussion between a European Union beset by very serious crises of all kinds and a Latin America more and more united and independent.The active participation in this move of Sweden, a country increasingly regarded as a slavish follower of the United States, probably seeks to put pressure on those members of the European Union more readily open to taking the summit seriously. However, the latest condemnation in Venezuela of plans to assassinate Vice-President Nicolás Maduro and the President of Venezuela's National Assembly Diosdado Cabello indicate that even more sinister motives may lie behind the organization of the CADAL event.According to the report in Crónica Digital, the organizers of CADAL's meeting of continental reactionaries are:

• Lawrence Corwin, regarded by the Cuban authorities as a US CIA official who was stationed in Cuba between 1998 and 2001;
  
• the Swedish diplomat Anders Ingemar Cederberg, who dedicated himself full time during his period in Havana to interfering in Cuba's affairs to the point that the Cuban authorities made formal protests to the Swedish government;
  
• Mijail Bonito Lovio, Secretary for International Relations of a body called  Independent and Democratic Cuba (CID);
  
• CADAL's Program Coordinator, Micaela Hierro Dori;
  
• and, finally, 18 politicians of the extreme-right wing American Parliamentary Democratic Alliance (APDA).

CADAL is an extreme-right wing network, based in Buenos Aires, from where it works to carry out an intensive program of propaganda and political pressure against the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas, led by Cuba and Venezuela.Formed on February 27th 2003 in Buenos Aires, CADAL has counted among its members very well known personalities and ideologues of the Latin American right wing with roots in the fascist dictatorships that submerged the Southern Cone in desolation during the 1970s. One notes the presence, for example, of Danilo Arbilla, former Press Secretary of the Uruguayan dictatorship (and also ex President of the Inter-American Press Society); Hugo Martini, former editor of the Carta Política magazine, the ideological organ of the Argentine dictatorship and also of General Pinochet's former Labour Minister José Piñera, whose brother Sebastián is today the Chilean President.

30,000 Iranian spies? Library of Congress withdraws report
A US Library of Congress report asserting that Iran's Intelligence agency has 30,000 employees has been widely quoted – and criticized. The report has been withdrawn and is now under revision.An official with the Library of Congress says a widely cited but poorly sourced report his office did on Iran's intelligence ministry has been pulled from circulation.
As we detailed last week, the study's ill-supported claim that the Iranian intelligence ministry has 30,000 employees was picked up by CNN and others. News outlets have also seized on other assertions in the report.The report, which was produced on behalf of a Pentagon office, had been posted on a non-public government-only website. It was leaked earlier this month."The report was pulled for revisions after the Division staff identified a passage that should have been caveated but was missed in the initial reviews," said Federal Research Division chief David Osborne in an email. "The report will be re-posted when revised."Osborne declined to specify the passage in question. It might have had nothing to do with the 30,000 figure.Another section of the report prompted a married couple branded as spies for Iran to consider legal action.The report flatly claims that a British woman and her Iranian-born husband are operatives for Iran's intelligence ministry. The husband, Massoud Khodabandeh, is a former-member-turned-fierce-critic of the Mujahadin-e Khalq (MEK), a small exile group that has long fought the government of Iran and was recently removed from the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations.The report even includes their pictures.[[[[The report's source for the spy claim is a 2007 essay published on a now-defunct website by Rabbi Daniel Zucker,(ZIONAZI JEW) who is chair of a group called Americans for Democracy in the Middle East and has frequently written in support of the MEK.]]]]]]]The Zucker piece in turn cites a 2005 post on another now-defunct pro-MEK website called iranterror.com. That site also states Khodabandeh and his wife are operatives for Iranian intelligence, but does not offer any sources or evidence.Even though it relied on questionable sourcing, the report effectively extended the imprimatur of the U.S. government to the claim that the couple are spies.Asked about the various criticisms of the report, Pentagon spokeswoman Anne Edgecomb told ProPublica: "We believe its findings will enrich the discussions and concepts of policy makers."She declined to comment further.The MEK's official website seized on the government report this month, publishing an item claiming that "a recent investigative report by [the] Pentagon ... revealed that Anne and Massoud Khodabandeh are agents of the mullahs' Ministry of Intelligence and Security."Khodabandeh and his wife, Anne, who also worked with the MEK in the 1980s and 90s, were incensed by the government report."Everything they've said is just made up," Anne Khodabandeh told ProPublica.Massoud Khodabandeh wrote a response column on Huffington Post blasting the report for its reliance on pro-MEK sources. The couple, who are based in the United Kingdom, run an anti-MEK website and consider the group a dangerous cult. (That charge that has been echoed by some outside observers but rejected by the MEK.)The study claims that after Khodabandeh left the MEK in 1996, he and Anne "agreed to work for [Iran's intelligence ministry] and spy on MEK." It claims that the intelligence ministry used threats against Khodabandeh's family in Tehran to compel the couple to cooperate.Earlier this month, Anne Khodabandeh emailed Osborne, the Federal Research Division chief, saying that "my solicitor would like to know the actual provenance of the report for further action." Osborne responded that the report had been pulled down for (again unspecified) revisions."The fact that the document was leaked to [Washington Free Beacon reporter] Mr. Bill Gertz or otherwise publicized is not the fault of the Library of Congress," Osborne wrote Jan. 9. It should be remembered that this is not confirmed - and there is most likely no way that it can ever be confirmed.
