Cuba Rejects US Threats on Syria: Statement

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 2 (acn) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba issued a statement rejecting U.S. threats against Syria, which we reproduce in full below:The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba has learned with deep concern, the statement made on August 31by the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in which he announced his decision to take military action against Syria.Without leaving any room for the ongoing attempts to reach a political solution to the conflict, or presenting any evidence and with total disregard of the opinions of many countries, including some of its major allies, and the United Nations, the President of the United States has announced its determination to perform acts in violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations to cause more death and destruction and lead, inevitably, to the intensification of the conflict the Arab nation is going through.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba is calling on members of the Security Council to fulfill its mandate to prevent any breach of the peace and stop military intervention that threatens international security in this volatile region of the worldCuba considers that the General Assembly, the only UN body which represents all countries, is also responsible for the stopping of the aggression, especially when it is foreseeable that the Security Council, due to the predominance of the United States in that organ cannot make a decision. The Assembly, in exercising its powers, should meet urgently and take necessary measures.The Secretary General of the United Nations should become directly involved in preventing acts that the President of the United States described as almost inevitable facts. It would be his job to make urgent and vigorous diplomatic efforts with the U.S. government to try to save the overwhelming responsibility of his office towards peace and global stability.The Group of 20 will meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, on September 5-6. Union of South American Nations Needs a Defense Doctrine
“We must develop a security and defense doctrine to protect our peace, the peace of this region,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua on Thursday in statements to the press from the city of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname , where the Seventh Presidential Summit of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

“South America has to confront the challenge of a world under the constant threat of imperialist aggression in search of natural resources,” he said, noting that the block’s Defense Council has held several meetings to create proposals.Earlier, Suriname’s Foreign Minister Winston Lackin said that the UNASUR meeting will issue a decision on the possible military intervention in Syria, a country that is the victim of attacks by NATO countries, particularly the United States and Israel.In this sense, Jaua stressed that Latin America is a region that “has great political stability and no conflict between countries.”“That’s a sacred trust that we must preserve and part of the doctrine that UNASUR has been building in this regard, that South America is a zone of peace, democracy and promoting peace in the world,” he said.Jaua also stated that this doctrine must go hand in hand with the development of the region’s vast natural resources “to prevent the possibility of military aggression for the appropriation of our resources.”He said it is essential that people understand the importance of using the natural resources of the region to achieve sovereign and dignified development for all Latin Americans.

On Saturday, the Palestinian Fatah al-Intifada (Fatah Uprising) Movement announced that it is ready to make use of all its capabilities to defend Syria against any foreign aggression. “Any aggression against any country or resistance partners is regarded aggression against all noble Arabs and under such conditions, it will be our duty to confront the US, the Israeli occupiers and their allies in a single front,” Yasser al-Masri who runs the Information Dissemination Center of Fatah Uprising told FNA in Damascus on Saturday. He said since the US and Israel are enemies of the axis of resistance, attacking them will be a natural move for any resistance movement, specially in Syria which is in the frontline of the countries which form the axis of resistance and confrontation with the occupying Israelis, and for the same reason it is “our duty to prepare ourselves for any US and western aggression”. Fatah al-Intifada (Fatah Uprising) is a Palestinian resistance movement founded by Colonel Said al-Muragha, better known as ‘Abu Musa’. The group is often referred to as the ‘Abu Musa Faction’. Officially it refers to itself as the Palestinian National Liberation Movement.

  The South American Defence Council and the Subversive Activities of the Pentagon
 A scandal has once again broken out in Bolivia with regard to the transfer eight years ago of 37 Chinese-made ground-to-air missiles to the US military «for deactivation». Vice-President Álvaro Linera has accused former army chief Marceo Antezana, who is now an opposition senator in parliament, of betraying the country’s national interests. Antezana is doing everything he can to try and justify his actions, referring to the dilapidated condition of the missiles and the danger they posed to military personnel one moment, and the direct order of the then President Rodriguez regarding the missiles’ transfer to Americans the next. It would be appropriate to remember that back in 2005 when these events were unfolding, the US Embassy announced that the missiles «could be used for their intended purpose in certain circumstances despite their defects». In other words, the military efficiency of the missiles was not in doubt, and the headquarters of the Southern Command of the US Army had decided that the government of Evo Morales, who had won the presidential elections, could not be trusted with such dangerous weapons. As his presidential term came to an end, Rodriguez came under pressure from the American Embassy and the missiles were taken out of Bolivia on US Air Force transport planes. In the country’s patriotic circles, it is still regarded as the most shameful and humiliating episode in the history of Bolivia’s armed forces. Almost every country south of the Rio Grande has come face to face with this kind of dictate at various times. Washington has used the 1947 Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance as a disciplinary «choke chain». The Pentagon decided who Latin America’s main enemy was, how the continent’s «internal enemies» should be dealt with, which weaponry should be used and what kind of uniforms should be worn by the national armed forces and so on. The Inter-American Treaty only began to show signs of irreparable strain after the victory of the Cuban Revolution and the establishment of extremely close ties between Cuban and Soviet armed forces, as well as after the Falklands War, when the US openly supported England against Argentina. Latin Americans began to think about their own role in ensuring the security of the continent and these tendencies increased following the emergence of the ALBA bloc – the Bolivarian alternative for Latin American nations. Hugo Chavez regularly referred to the need to strengthen military cooperation between Latin American countries, linking this goal with the Latin American integration process. The Venezuelan leader did not hide the fact that he was troubled by the increase of US aggression in various parts of the world and the inordinate cruelty with which Pentagon globalisers disposed of «unfriendly» regimes. Chavez was convinced that the Empire would, sooner or later, take advantage of its crushing military power to «establish order» in the Latin-American and Caribbean region in keeping with its plans for a Pax Americana.
The South American Defence Council was established in March 2009 and includes 12 states. The Council declared its main objectives to be the consolidation of South America as a zone of peace and a basis for democratic stability, and the full development of the people inhabiting it. The emergence of a South American identity in the area of defence, which makes full allowance for subregional and national characteristics, encourages a strengthening of the unity of Latin American and Caribbean countries, and a consensus on regional cooperation in the area of defence is going to be worked out. The issue is already being discussed by the Council, including emerging disagreements with regard to military budgets and the settlement of present-day conflicts; measures to ensure external security are being coordinated. It is symbolic that such high-profile South American politicians as Inácio Lula and Hugo Chavez were among the originators of the Council. They constantly emphasised the fact that if leading regional politicians did not take it upon themselves to solve the issue of the continent’s peace and security then it would be done by other forces alien to Latin America. And then there would be no guarantees that weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear missiles, would not show up there, especially in the South Atlantic. From the very outset of the Council, the decision was made not to allow the US to be involved, since it does not have a geographical relationship with South America. The Empire, however, along with its most dependable ally – the UK – believe otherwise. Their submarines armed with nuclear warheads regularly patrol the South Atlantic, ignoring all calls to preserve the denuclearised zone. Evidence exists that there are atomic warheads at the British military base on the Falkland Islands and the means to deliver them. So with the full knowledge of the Pentagon, the conditions of the Treaty of Tlatelolco on the creation of a nuclear-free zone in Latin America and the Caribbean are being ignored. The treaty was signed in February 1967 and was the collective response of the countries in the region to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. This aspect of the issue had always worried Brazil, since 90 percent of their trade was carried out across the Atlantic. The situation is now even more complicated due to the discovery of rich oil and gas reserves in the territorial waters of Brazil and Venezuela, and US oil companies want to be involved in their development on a priority basis. Council member countries are insistent that NATO’s organisation and structure will not be replicated in any way, since the Council of Defence is not a «traditional military alliance» with the prospect of carrying out «operations» outside of South America. It has no kind of punitive functions! Neither is there expected to be an arms race in the region, although the objective of creating a credible deterrence posture is being discussed in earnest. Joint armament projects are under discussion at conferences involving the Council’s representatives in order to develop a defence doctrine. Upon the initiative of Argentina, the first of these will be the creation of the training aircraft UNASUR-I by 2017, which will train air force pilots from South American countries. Brazil is going to oversee the regional drone project. There is also a plan to form the UNASUR space agency so that in time there will be greater independence to create satellite communications systems and, apparently, to carry out space surveillance in the interests of defence. The all-out espionage being carried out by American intelligence agencies is giving rise to a distancing in this sphere from the Pentagon. The creation of a South American School of Defence (Esude) is an important aspect for the strengthening of mutual trust between militaries. According to the latest information, the school is going to be set up in Ecuador. President Rafael Correa has declared that he is prepared to do whatever is necessary to speed up the implementation of the project. Military experts see this initiative as the desire to do away with the negative legacy of the School of the Americas once and for all, a school that was set up under the aegis of the Pentagon and which was known by the macabre name of the «School of Assassins and Terror». In April 2013, under pressure from human rights organisations, a federal judge of the Northern District of California decided to declassify materials on the School of the Americas, which operates under the name of The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation» (SOA/WHINSEC). Until 1984, the School of the Americas was situated in the Panama Canal Zone before being moved to Fort Benning (America). The Pentagon is disputing the judge’s decision, believing that in this instance, human rights defenders will obtain additional confirmation of well-known facts about how the school’s graduates (nearly one thousand every year) have stained themselves with numerous crimes. Hundreds of thousands have passed through the torture chambers – raped, humiliated, driven mad, murdered and missing Latin Americans – all to the credit of the instructors and teaching staff at the School of the Americas. As a rule, «death squads» in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Columbia and other countries have been headed by graduates of the school.

"These women plan to become the concubines of the rebels and terrorist groups members," the sources added.Recently, some radical clerics in Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been intesifying their rhetoric against the Syrian government and called for Jihad against the Syrian people.A senior cleric of Egypt's powerful al-Azhar University denounced the recent divisive remarks by the Saudi muftis. Sheikh Mansour Mandour said in June that Saudi cleric Muhammad Al Arefi had expressed his personal views when he urged support for insurgency in Syria.The Saudi sheikh stirred controversy by calling for "Jihad" in Syria. The last time the African community was a victim of chemical warfare it was at the hands of the U.S. government in the form of crack cocaine in the 1980s and 90s. Today chemical warfare is carried out in the form of pharmaceutical drugs sold in hospitals and on the streets. Therefore, what right does the U.S. government have to accuse anyone of handling chemical weapons? 3. Syria is aligned with the anti-U.S. imperialist regime of Iran, as well as the militant Lebanese liberation organization known as Hezbollah. 4. Through its attempt to organize a coup through invasion, the U.S. government is imposing its absolute will on the Syrian people as to who their leadership will be. There are many more reasons we could provide to demonstrate the importance of the African Liberation Movement declaring "Victory to Syria!" These are just a few. However, the point remains: the African Liberation Movement and the overall anti-imperialist movement must respond by hitting the streets and organizing massive and militant protests against the U.S. military intervention in Syria. If you are not currently a member of the BIBC we encourage you to join us. However, one need not become a member of the BIBC in order to organize and participate in opposition against to the U.S. attack on Syria.

And for the second day in a row, President Barack Obama publicly cited the threat against Israel if Assad’s reported use of chemical weapons goes unchecked. “It endangers our friends and our partners along Syria’s borders, including Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq,” Obama said Saturday in the Rose Garden. “It could lead to escalating use of chemical weapons, or their proliferation to terrorist groups who would do our people harm.” The White House will need every vote it can get on the Syria resolution, and the senior administration officials left little doubt that Israel would be a point of emphasis in private discussions with members of Congress. The Capitol is filled with strong supporters of Israel who understand the argument, one of the officials said. But Israel’s security is a political razor blade that could cut both ways. As Obama has weighed potential military action, the politics of Israel’s interests have become more delicate. The prospect of strikes against Syria triggering reprisals from Iran and Hezbollah is real enough to bolster the case against authorizing the president to use force, too, congressional insiders say. “You’re going to see people arguing the exact opposite” of Obama, said Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, who has spent time in the region. An Israel play “could really backfire.”The administration’s case that intervening benefits Israel will turn on what lawmakers hear from pro-Israel groups in their communities and from the reactions of leading Jewish lawmakers, said a senior House Democratic aide. The Israel angle “only has a major impact if it’s getting validated from others,” the aide said. “Doesn’t have to be AIPAC writ large, but the local AIPAC lay leaders that the members have personal relationships [with] need to be validating.” House leaders are likely to use prominent Jewish members who are hawkish on Israel as a bellwether. That group includes Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Steve Israel (D-N.Y.). Engel announced on Friday that the administration had convinced him it was appropriate to make punitive strikes against Assad, though he had been pretty clearly in the camp favoring action before that. “We cannot stand idly by,” Engel said on NBC’s “Today” show. “If we stand idly by, then every despot in the world thinks they can commit war crimes and no one will do anything.” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a leader in the progressive caucus who is Jewish, released a statement Saturday night praising Obama for seeking congressional approval for the use of force in Syria. But she stopped short of endorsing his authorization measure. “We need to determine the best way to respond to the heinous use of chemical weapons in Syria and how we can act effectively to protect civilians from further massacres,” she said.

Catholic Church leaders against attack on Syria
 In a letter to Israel-Firster John Kerry, American Catholic Bishops and European Catholic leaders have warned that a US-led military attack on Syria would lead to an escalation of hostilities. The letter, signed by the committee chairman, Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, called on the US to work with other governments to pursue negotiations and a cease-fire. Russian president Vladimir Putin and Chinese laeders have insisted that there would never be a peaceful solution to the Syrian bloodshed without Tehran being on the negotiation table.  People suffering from Napalm-like burns have been speaking of an attack in which a plane apparently dropped an incendiary bomb on students in Syria. 

Video said to be from the town of Urum al Kubra, close to Aleppo, shows a man reported to be a school teacher, who says the students were attacked as they tried to escape from an attack nearby. "The plane hit a residential area in Urum al Kubra," he explains. "We tried to get out quickly so we don't get hurt, but it seems someone's fate caught up with them today. "A gathering of students formed, which is normal as the students needed to leave under these circumstances, and the plane hit us." In another video filmed in the aftermath of the attack, a doctor reports seven deaths and 50 injuries - and says the burns resembled Napalm injuries.[[[However, the use of the substance has not been confirmed.]]] Separate footage showed other victims of the alleged attack and a features a woman who introduces herself as Dr Roula, from organisation 'Hand in Hand for Syria'. WARS FOR ISRAHELL..A poll of Jewish Hebrew-speaking Israelis finds that 67% support an American attack on Syria.

While in the United States and Great Britain, some 90 percent of the publics are opposed to such an attack -- in Israel, more than 66% of the Jewish Hebrew-speaking population supports an attack (only 17% opposes). With that, the exact same percentage of the population is concerned that if such an attack occurs, Israel will be drawn into a war.This duality, which characterizes the Israeli mood and public discourse in recent weeks, receives statistical affirmation in an Israel Hayom survey conducted by New Wave Research.Israelis believe that ultimately an attack against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime will take place -- close to 73% of Israelis believe so. More than 57% believe if the U.S. attacks Syria, the Israel Defense Forces will act against specific targets or threats. Only 13% think that the situation will deteriorate into all-out war in the Middle East. Over 28.7% said they are not concerned that a U.S. attack will drag Israel into a war.

Another statistic of note coming from the survey is that over 71% of those questioned have equipped themselves with a gas mask. Of those who still have not, some 25% said they intended to do so in the coming days (some 7% of all those polled). 37% said they do not intend to get gas masks (some 10% of all those polled), and the same percentage said they have not yet decided.

On Aug. 17, Abu Jihad picked up his cell phone near Aleppo in Syria and dialed a number in Halabja in Iraqi Kurdistan. Abu Jihad was a messenger of death for the family of his co-jihadist friend, Osman Abdulrahim, 24, who had been fighting against the Syrian government forces for less than three months with the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra. Osman was among a growing number of jihadi Sunni fighters, including Iraqi Kurds, who are traveling to Syria in the name of “holy war.” The number of foreign fighters is estimated between 6,000 to as many as 15,000, according to media reports citing Western and Arab intelligence sources. Ali, Osman's eldest brother who works for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), sat down with Al-Monitor at the Sheikh Abdul Aziz mosque in Halabja on Aug. 25 to explain what he knew about his brother’s death. “I was out, and it was around 8 a.m. when my sister called me and said someone had just called and wanted to talk to one of Osman's brothers.” Ali knew that Osman was with Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria. "I used to talk to him two or three times a week, and every time I told him to come back to Halabja, but he didn’t listen." Ali had dialed Abu Jihad’s number — obtained by Al-Monitor and starting with +90, the Turkey's international dialing code — and was told of his brother’s death. Halabja itself is not alien to jihadist ideology and Islamist foreign fighters. From the late 1990s until February 2003, Halabja’s border with Iran was controlled by an extremist Islamic Kurdish group called Ansar al-Islam, which consisted of foreign fighters who had fled Afghanistan during and after the 2001 war in the wake of 9/11. Halabja is still considered a stronghold of Islamic political parties in Kurdistan. According to his brother, Osman was a devout Muslim who recited the Quran on a regular basis and was a fervent believer in the Islamic duty of jihad. Osman’s education was limited, having only completed four years of primary school before dropping out due to the international sanctions on Iraq, and the severe financial strain it imposed on millions of Iraqis. He did not watch much TV except for the news. Ali claims that Osman told no one that he was going to Syria in early May, including him. However, Osman called Ali one week later to inform his brother that he was in Syria to perform jihad. Prior to that, he had been a laborer in a nearby mosque and managed to save up just over $1,000. "That morning, when Osman left, he was short of money and asked to borrow 300,000 Iraqi dinars (about $250) from my father," Ali recalled. Arsalan, Osman’s first cousin and close friend, noted some behavioral changes in Osman prior to his departure to Syria. "Sometimes, Osman would look at the contents of my cell phone and delete music and some photos, and he would say they are not Islamic," he told Al-Monitor, standing next to his cousin Ali at the Sheikh Abdul Aziz mosque. It was this sense of self-righteousness, the feeling that he was following the true teaching of Islam that pushed Osman and many others to go to Syria. Before he died, he told his brother Ali that there were around 70 Kurds from Iraqi Kurdistan in the ranks of Jabhat al-Nusra. Less than a week after Osman's death, Rabar Tariq Maroof, 17, from Halabja was also killed near Aleppo. One of his former teachers, who did not want to be identified, told Al-Monitor that Rabar had recently finished the fifth-grade exams at the private Halabja Shaheed secondary school. The school where Rabar studied is run by the Turkish Islamic Fezalar group which has close ties with the powerful Islamic Turkish scholar Fethullah Gulen. It is unclear whether the school, which attracts the brightest in the area, had any influence in the radicalization of young Rabar. What is certain is that during the last month of fighting in Ras al-Ain in northern Syria between the armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and Jabhat al-Nusra fighters, Rabar’s passport was left behind and published by the PYD in the Kurdish media, to prove that Iraqi Kurdish jihadists were fighting against their brethren in Syria. Iraqi Kurds have largely supported Syrian Kurds in their efforts to clear their area of Assad forces, the Free Syrian Army and jihadists groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra. In recent days, the KRG and the public have provided shelter to thousands of fleeing Syrian Kurdish refugees. Almost everyone in Iraqi Kurdistan, including the main Islamic parties, disapproves of the actions of young Kurdish men who join groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra, especially if they fight against Kurdish nationalist groups such as the PYD. While it is difficult to ascertain exactly how many Iraqi Kurds have gone to Syria for jihad, reports in Kurdish media suggest that the number is growing.

The army announced on Saturday that it had arrested two Lebanese in connection to the firing of rockets from southern Lebanon towards Israel. The Army Command said in a statement that Youssef Mohammed al-Fleity and Omar Abdul Mawla al-Atrash confessed to transporting rockets from the Gaza region in the Bekaa to individuals in the southern region of Tyre. The rockets were since fired from al-Hawsh-Tyre region towards Israel on August 22. Four Katyusha rockets were fired in the incident and Israel's Channel 2 said a rocket landed in the town of Nahariya. The Israeli army said its Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted one of "three or four rockets fired from south of Tyre." The other rockets did not land in Israeli territory. The attack prompted Israeli warplanes the next day to strike a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) base in a valley in Naameh that lies 16 kilometers south of Beirut. The strike did not cause any casualties or material damage. The PFLP-GC denied it was involved in the rocket attack. On Friday, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr ordered the arrest of two suspects linked to the incident.
