Brazil's Human Rights Plan Angers Military Leadershttp://insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2009/december/31/latam-09123102.htm

A plan of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government to investigate human rights abuses during the military dictatorship (1964-1985) has angered Brazil's military leaders, Brazilian newspapers reported Wednesday.

O Globo, a newspaper from Rio de Janeiro, carried the headline "Military crisis forces Lula to reconsider decree." The paper explained that the military said they were angry with a part of the program which includes measures that could lead to the conviction of officers from the military period.

comment-it is a known fact that some military officials and commanders in the  brazilian armed forces, were around at time of the military dictatorship when then president joao goulart, was overthrown by a coup instigated and supported by washington(plan operation condor). These people were trained by school of americas, and have managed to escape prosecution and accountability for their part.If lula buckles under pressure, and does allow the investigations ,to exempt, their role in the coup, then it will be a travesty of justice and a huge diservice to what he initially set out to do.This investigation must expose us governments role and whatever military brasilian officials were implicated. No less will suffice. Also see this...

Bolivia's President Evo Morales, said Friday that the former mayor of Cochabamba (center) and presidential candidate in elections last December 6, Manfred Reyes Villa, inundated by corruption claims and an order of constraint, is now in the U.S.

In a press conference at the Government Palace, the head of State regretted that "the criminals purchased the judiciary authorities and the police."  "From the information I have  Manfred is already in the U.S. and two state structures are guilty: the judiciary and the national police, for allowing him to flee" he said.
