Do words still have a meaning? There is room for doubt after President Obama’s speech yesterday in Oslo. The man who is pursuing two wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan at the helm of the most powerful military complex in history, afforded himself the luxury of posing as a pacifist as he received the Nobel Peace prize. Making clever use of allusions and religious rhetoric, he portrayed war as an inescapable fate and glossed over the crimes being committed in the Middle East under his command.

Swiss businessman builds minaret in protesthttp://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jEtHJMaOboide2wITSxabVwvHTYg
A Swiss businessman appalled by his fellow countrymen's decision to ban minarets has extended a chimney above his company building into a minaret in protest."It was scandalous that the Swiss voted for the ban. Now we have the support of all the far-right parties across Europe. This is shameful," Guillaume Morand, who owns a chain of shoe stores, told AFP.The businessman, who is not a Muslim, explained that the he had constructed the mock minaret at his building near western Switzerland's city of Lausanne in protest, and at the same time, to "send a message of peace."Morand blamed other political parties in Switzerland for not having campaigned against the far-right motion ahead of the referendum

Does Public Opinion Matter? World Attitudes on Global Governancehttp://www.cfr.org/publication/20934/does_public_opinion_matter_world_attitudes_on_global_governance.html?breadcrumb=%2Fissue%2F49%2Fpolls
We found some -- if I can give you a sense of some of the headline findings, one of the striking things that we found is just how similar many publics around the worlds are in terms of the sort of world order that they want. They're extremely multilaterally inclined; they believe in a world order based on international law; they believe countries should obey international law even if it goes against their national interests. They are strongly inclined to make the United States a major -- excuse me, the United Nations the major bedrock of international order. They recognize that it has problems, but they strongly look to the United Nations, and particularly the U.N. Security Council, as the bedrock authority of international legitimacy when it comes to issues, for instance, of the use of force. In general, publics appear to be less sovereignty obsessed and less concerned about freedom of action for their own countries than you would imagine, than often is the conventional wisdom, and that their -- and that the governments are themselves. Here are some examples. Asked about having a standing U.N. peacekeeping force selected, trained and commanded by the United Nations, on average, across 22 countries, 66 percent favored that idea, as well as 72 percent of the American public.

And when that dirty business is the subversion of the American people's right to privacy, there's also nothing quite like economic self-interest for ensuring that a cone of silence descends over matters best left to the experts; a veritable army of specialists squeezing singular advantage out of any circumstance, regardless of how dire the implications for our democracy

"Even in a world that over the last decade has been afflicted with such logical and moral affronts as humanitarian war and preemptive retaliation, awarding a peace prize to a war president represents a new nadir of cynical realpolitik and a flagrant endorsement of militarism, however well-disposed many may have been toward its most recent recipient."

Working for a personnel-recruiting company which was contracted by the Defence Department at Camp Lejeune, Manion became alarmed at the military’s inability to give sufficient treatment to returning soldiers. He was also concerned by their reports of outright abuse meted out by some commanders against lower-ranking soldiers who sought help.Manion told IPS that last April two Marines urgently sought his help soon after the clinic opened at 7am. They told him, "One of these guys is liable to come back [from Iraq or Afghanistan] with a loaded weapon and open fire."

President Obama 'creating torture impunity'http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=113436§ionid=3510203
The American Civil Liberties’ Union says Barack Obama is allowing George Bush’s torture policies to continue by creating impunity for CIA interrogators who used waterboarding on suspected militants. Jameel Jaffer, Director of the ACLU's National Security Project said: "The Bush administration constructed a legal framework for torture and now the Obama administration is constructing a legal framework for impunity," adding: "We're frustrated by the growing gap between (the) Obama administration's rhetoric on accountability and reality." In April, Obama released Bush-era memos specifying that the practice did not constitute torture. Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld were among those accused of masterminding the Bush torture policy. Jaffer noted that "on every front, the administration is actively obstructing accountability by shielding Bush officials from civil liability, criminal investigation and even public scrutiny for their role in authorizing torture." ACLU Attorney Ben Wizner said: " Not a single torture victim has had his day in court."
Ecuador says U.S. helped Colombia plan '08 bombinghttp://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091211/wl_nm/us_ecuador_usa_raid
The Ecuadorian government said Thursday U.S. intelligence from inside Ecuador was used to plan a 2008 bombing by Colombian troops that killed a top FARC guerrilla leader in Ecuadorean territory. A government report says U.S. forces then based in the Pacific coast town of Manta helped Colombian troops target Raul Reyes, No. 2 commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. The March 2008 bombing triggered a diplomatic crisis. Ecuador and Colombia are just now reestablishing diplomatic ties severed by Quito after the raid. Ecuador has since ended its Manta agreement, prompting Washington to sign a deal with Colombia in October allowing U.S. forces to carry out anti-drug operations from seven Colombian military bases. Several Latin American governments object to the new U.S.-Colombia pact. Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has warned it could set the stage for the U.S. invasion of his country.
UK's richest man could make more than £1bn from carbon tradinghttp://dprogram.net/2009/12/09/uks-richest-man-could-make-more-than-1bn-from-carbon-trading-scheme/
The Non Governmental Organization Sandbag has revealed the UK’s richest resident, Lakshmi Mittal, CEO of steel giant ArcelorMittal, could make $1.6 billion between now and 2012 from the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme. ArcelorMittal has over 14 million emissions permits that it does not need in 2008, a figure that could rise to 80 million by 2012. Sandbag has written to Mittal, urging him to cancel his company’s unneeded emissions permits. If cancelled, the 80 million surplus permits would prevent 80 million tons’ worth of pollution entering the earth’s atmosphere, equivalent to the annual emissions of Denmark. Anna Pearson, Head of Policy at Sandbag said: “ArcelorMittal received its emissions permits for free and could choose to cancel them. We’re calling on them to trade in the windfall profits they could make. This would set an example not only to industry worldwide but to global leaders in Copenhagen.”
