Obama: Defending the 'interests of empire'http://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/features/61612

For those anticipating sweeping, immediate change from Barack Obama's election to the US presidency, the results of the president's first year in office will undoubtedly have proven profoundly disappointing, writes Demba Moussa Dembele. Just as his Accra address was rooted in patronising references to 'corruption' and 'tribalism', it should be always borne in mind that Obama operates and will continue to operate first and foremost in defence of the 'interests of empire', Dembele stresses.

Obama’s national security policy towards Africa: The first yearhttp://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/features/61614

A year into his presidency, Barack Obama is essentially following the same course of militarised action in Africa pursued by his predecessors over the past decade, writes Daniel Volman. A consequence of the US president's faith in the necessity of the global war on terror and pragmatic political concerns around retaining oil supplies, Obama's approach to Africa has been entirely rooted in asserting his country's military might, Volman concludes.

Obama's first year: a World War 4 Report scorecardhttp://www.ww4report.com/node/8237

World War 4 Report has been keeping a dispassionate record of Barack Obama's moves in dismantling, continuing and escalating (he has done all three) the oppressive apparatus of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) established by the Bush White House. On the first anniversary of his inauguration, we offer the following annotated assessment of which moves have been on balance positive, neutral and negative, and arrive at an overall score:

He may be out of harm's way over at Health & Human Services, but he still shares the neocon agenda. Negative Positives: 18 Neutrals: 4 Negatives: 38 Overall score: 63.3% Negative

comment-this report does not reflect the blog's own score, wich rates obama at least 90% negative,ww4 failed to adress, the bailouts of banks who funded obamas campaign, obamas appointments, its foreign policy agenda in latin ameirca, africa, middle east and much more...

Ecuador: Chevron’s dirty tactics delay trial over eco-destructionhttp://www.greenleft.org.au/2010/823/42308

Now, in the build-up to the final hearing before a verdict is passed, Chevron is attempting to file a parallel international arbitration case in the Hague, Holland. The allegation that Ecuador’s judicial system cannot fairly adjudicate the long-running oil pollution litigation is another attempt to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the case brought against Chevron.

It is an Occupation," say Haitians as U.S. Troops Arrivehttp://www.cadenagramonte.cubaweb.cu/english/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1440:haiti-under-us-occupation-threat-&catid=3:world&Itemid=14

"It is an occupation. The palace is the country, it represents our power, our face, our pride," denounced some witnesses as they watch the first of 13,000 U.S. troops arrive and take over their Presidential Palace.

Meanwhile, President Evo Morales said Wednesday that Bolivia would seek U.N. condemnation of what he called the U.S. military occupation of earthquake-stricken Haiti.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/20/AR2010012003897.html

"The United States cannot use a natural disaster to militarily occupy Haiti," he told reporters at the presidential palace."Haiti doesn't need more blood," Morales added, implying that the militarized U.S. humanitarian mission could lead to bloodshed. His criticism echoed that of fellow leftist, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who said Sunday that "it appears the gringos are militarily occupying Haiti."

A controversial CIA contractor has found new work in Haiti, flying drones on disaster recovery duty.  When last we heard from Evergreen International Aviation, the Oregon-based firm was offering to post sentries at local voting centers during the 2008 election, ”detaining troublemakers” and making sure voters “do not get out of control.

Army-sponsored report suggests new 'police force'http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=122533

A newly released Rand Corporation report proposes the federal government create a rapid deployment "Stabilization Police Force" that would be tasked with "shaping an environment before a conflict" and restoring order in times of war, natural disaster or national emergency. But civil libertarians are worried just exactly what the force would do, domestically or overseas.

"There's nothing liberal about the bailouts. There's nothing liberal about standing by and watching banks use public money to get their executive bonuses. There's nothing liberal about giving insurance companies carte blanche to charge anything they want for health care... Since when did that become liberal?" "There's nothing liberal about letting coal and oil write climate change legislation," he added. "Are you kidding me?"

People For the American Way Calls for Constitutional Amendment to Undo Supreme Court Decisionhttp://site.pfaw.org/site/PageServer?pagename=media_2010_01_pfaw_calls_for_constitutional_amendment

"Today's ruling by the Supreme Court strikes at the core of our democracy. The framers could never have imagined, and surely didn't desire, a system in which corporations could pour literally billions of dollars into elections and hold virtually limitless influence over the fate of our elected representatives. Such a system does not promote free speech; it mocks it. "As Justice Stevens pointed out in his dissent, corporations are not people. They are not citizens. They do not have a right to vote and they can not be given unlimited power to influence elections.

US makes use of Haiti's tragedy to occupy it militarilyhttp://www.abn.info.ve/go_news5.php?articulo=216778&lee=17

“There is an exaggerated presence of US soldiers in Haiti after the earthquake occurred in that Caribbean nation a few days ago. It is worrying that the North American Government is taking advantage of a tragedy to occupy Haiti militarily,” he affirmed.

“Cuba and Venezuela together have more doctors in Haiti than the US. I hope the US Government understand so and stop sending war troops because what this country needs are doctors, medicines and machinery,” he insisted.

“This is a counterattack of the empire in the disguise of cooperation,” he stated.“We have requested to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Alba political board for the coming days, which is made by the foreign ministers of the member countries, in order to evaluate the situation of the nation. The idea is that the Alba assumes the responsibility of helping to rebuild Haiti,” he expressed.

Ex-envoy:"Earthquake gives opportunity to reform Haiti". What A Terrible Thing To Sayhttp://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/21/haiti.reform/

The devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck poverty-stricken Haiti just over a week ago offers a unique opportunity for reforming the country's economy and institutions, a former U.S. envoy to Haiti said Thursday. "If we can change some of those underlying factors that inhibit growth -- in particular the weak government -- I think there's a chance for long-term development," James Dobbins told CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

He said there are three reasons why he believes there may be a better chance now to reform Haiti than in the past: bipartisanship on the issue in Washington, substantial assistance from the United States and other countries, and a greater willingness in Haiti to embrace change. "It has undergone shock," he said. "Some of the institutional and social obstacles to reform may now be more movable. The Haitian system itself may be more malleable." Colombia has 'Democratic friends' in US Congress: Ex-Im Bankhttp://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/economy/7792-us-colombian-fta-will-not-be-considered-by-congress-in-2010.html

Colombia has as many friends amongst Democrats in the U.S. Congress as amongst Republicans, the chairman of the U.S. Export-Import Bank declared Thursday. Bank chairman Fred Hochberg rejected the idea that a change in the composition of Congress in November's congressional elections will have a negative impact on the passage of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement.

"The FTA is an issue that is in the mind of President Barack Obama" he said. Hochberg's comments follow many months of uncertainty over the future of the U.S.-Colombia FTA, which was signed in late 2006. It has not yet been ratified by U.S. Congress, due to Democratic representatives' concerns about Colombia's human rights record and the suppression of organised labor.

comment-so, never mind human rigth atrocities ,genocide ,ethnic cleansing rigthwing paramilitary death squads ran by uribe gov in colombia, the displacement of indigenous communities, the thousands of dead labor leaders, the extrajudicial killings, the targeted political assasinations of opposition party members, the non existent human rigths, the Bank chairman Fred Hochberg(ashkenazi) assures us that despite these concerns wich have been brougth by hundreds of human rigths organizations, ngo's to attention of washington will not stop the free trade agreement.Isnt that conforting for the millions of victims, demanding us cut aid with uribe?

Military Outsources Rescue Operationshttp://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/01/military-outsources-hostage-rescue-to-virginia-firm/

In the American military, few missions are considered more important than rescuing missing or kidnapped troops. So it’s more than a little odd that U.S. forces in Iraq have decided to outsource that operation to a private company. The military’s Joint Contracting Command-Iraq/Afghanistan on Sunday handed out a one year, $11.3 million, no-bid contract to Blackbird Technologies Inc., declaring that the firm was “the only contractor that can currently provide the subject matter expertise needed” for personnel rescue operations.

URGENT ACTION: Hold GDF Suez Accountable for Damming the Amazon!http://www.amazonwatch.org/take_action/action_alerts/view_news.php?id=1990

Last week, Amazon Watch joined a coalition of civil society organizations from Brazil, France, Peru and the United States to send a letter to the French multinational company GDF Suez, criticizing the company for its involvement in the planning and construction of the controversial Jirau hydroelectric dam on the Brazilian Amazon's Madeira River.  For its role in this harmful dam project, GDF Suez has been short-listed to "win" the 2010 Public Eye People's Award, which recognizes the company as one of the world's least socially and environmentally responsible companies.  We need your vote to win the "People's Award" and hold GDF Suez accountable for shameful treatment of the Madeira River basin and its inhabitants. Please visit the Public Eye website to view the short video on GDF Suez's role in the Jirau dam and cast your vote now!http://www.publiceye.ch/en/vote/
