U.S., NATO Expand Afghan War To Horn Of Africa And Indian Oceanhttp://www.voltairenet.org/article163490.html

The orchestrated stunt of the Christmas pseudo-bomber cropped up right on cue to provide an alibi for the military attacks against Yemen that had started months earlier. As always, ubiquitous Al Qaeda and the synthetic "war on terror" serve as Washington’s trump cards to promote its global geopolitical ambitions.

In parallel with the escalation of the war in South Asia – counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan and drone missile attacks in Pakistan – the United States and its NATO allies have laid the groundwork for increased naval, air and ground operations in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.

Weisbrot: “Proposed Amnesty Serves to Whitewash Honduran Coup”http://hondurasoye.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/weisbrot-proposed-amnesty-serves-to-whitewash-honduran-coup/

Washington, D.C. - The international community should offer no support for planned amnesty for the perpetrators of the Honduran coup, Mark Weisbrot, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, said today.

Noting that both ousted President Manuel Zelaya and coup leaders previously agreed on a deal to resolve the crisis that did not include amnesty for crimes, Weisbrot cautioned that current efforts to grant amnesty to the coup leaders would be merely an attempt to “whitewash the coup.”

“The international community should remember that this is a regime that not only dealt a deadly blow to Honduran democracy through a military coup, it has also attempted to turn back time to a dark period of bloody dictatorships, death squads, disappearances, tortures, and murders,” Weisbrot said. “Only international pressure will stop these abuses.”

Violent repression against farmers in Honduras convicted DD.HH. Agencieshttp://www.cubadebate.cu/noticias/2010/01/08/violenta-represion-campesinos-honduras/

Human rights organizations in Honduras on Friday repudiated the violent repression by the army and police over the eviction of peasants in the Valley Aguán in the northern province of Colon, who qualified it as human butchery. The operation of some 500 soldiers and police began Friday morning with the use of military weapons, tear gas.

"We condemn the savage military repression against men, women and children in rural Columbus," said  a statement by the Committee of Relatives of Disappeared Detainees (Cofadeh). The farmers claim the use of those lands once owned by the state, delivered by ousted President Manuel Zelaya, after a protracted conflict with landowners in the region.  The precise Cofadeh farmers reported since December 2008, the resumption of hostile military acts against them to remove them from the land, since 2004. "These allegations streamlined the process of what today has become human barbarism, on lands owned by the State and not the landowners' needs.

Venezuela: US Interventionism Denouncedhttp://www.insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2010/january/08/latam-10010801.htm

Venezuelan farmers and fishermen belonging to the Simon Bolivar National Front accused the United States government of planning instability in South America through application of its interventionist policies.

The note also pointed out Washington's complicity in the coup against Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, and its provocations against Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Paraguay. It warned national and world public opinion of the war strategy promoted in the region by the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency.

According to the Simon Bolivar Front the subordination demonstrated by some nations is reprehensible. It is a submissive posture assumed by Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe and Peruvian president Alan Garcia, it specified. DAI’s not so invisible puppet showhttp://machetera.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/dais-not-so-invisible-puppet-show/

Let’s review who the sorry subcontractor likely reported to. Michael Morfit, DAI’s Vice President for Governance and Public Sector Management began his career in Indonesia where he worked for eight years on behalf of the Ford Foundation and USAID. He later moved on to the Philippines, and finally to USAID’s Office of Caribbean Affairs and the Office of Strategic Planning. He also directed USAID’s Haiti Task Force where, according to the Georgetown University website,http://explore.georgetown.edu/people/mm755/

“he was directly involved in U.S. Government planning and policy formation for major international development initiatives.”According to the same website, his tenure at DAI was immensely profitable for the company, since the democracy and governance portion of the business saw its revenues increase from $3 million to $25 million under his stewardship.

Most recently he has been consulting in Serbia, the same land from which emerged Ivan Marovic, of OTPOR, which as both Eva Golinger and George Ciccarielo-Maherhttp://www.counterpunch.org/maher06092007.htmlexplained, was the model advised for the student protests in favor of U.S.objectives in Venezuela.

Marovic later surfaced in Honduras where he was warmly received by the independent journalist Al Giordano, whose annual journalism classes are being partially underwrittenhttp://www.authenticjournalism.org/this year by Peter Ackerman’s International Center for Non-Violent Conflict.

Over 3,700 members of six criminal groups active in Colombia: policehttp://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/news/7606-at-least-3700-members-of-six-criminal-groups-active-in-colombia-police-general.html

Police revealed Friday that at least six different criminal organizations with a combined total of 3,700 members, some of them former paramilitaries, are currently operating in Colombia.

Leon further said that although authorities lack a precise figure regarding how many of the 3,700 men were members of former paramilitary groups (who ostensibly demobilized in negotiations with the government in 2003) it is estimated that between 12% and 13% are ex-members of paramilitary death squads

They cleared and worked new lands in areas they declared “independent republics," in an attempt to regain subsistence land and free themselves from a national government they distrusted due to “personal experience with social and economic partisanship and... the double value system upheld by the ruling classes.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dollar dying as oil currencyhttp://www.abn.info.ve/go_news5.php?articulo=214497&lee=17

- The condition of the U.S. dollar as the main reference for oil transactions and other raw materials in the international markets and currency for the national reserves of many countries could come to an end this decade that is just starting.  This possibility represents a great problem for the already depressed economy of the United States that is trying to recover from one of the worst crisis in the past one hundred years.  Said situation has resulted in a determining factor in the military conduct of that country, which wants at any cost to assure the survival of the capitalist system and its cracked unipolar hegemony.

A Maryland scientist accused of giving classified defense information to an FBI agent posing as an Israeli intelligence officer was under suspicion of breaching top-secret protocols as early as 2002, court documents said.

Investigators searching Nozette's computers found evidence, authorities said, that he had shared documents related to a project referred to in court documents as Advanced Concept Technology with Israel Aircraft Industries, a defense company owned by the Israeli government.

Scientist finding many negative impacts of Roundup Ready GM crops hidden by USDAhttp://www.non-gmoreport.com/articles/jan10/scientists_find_negative_impacts_of_GM_crops.php

Robert Kremer is a microbiologist with the US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service and an adjunct professor in the Division of Plant Sciences at the University of Missouri.

He is co-author of one of five papers published in the October 2009 issue of The European Journal of Agronomy that found negative impacts of Roundup herbicide, which is used extensively with Roundup Ready genetically modified crops. Kremer has been studying the impacts of glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, since 1997.

JPMorgan Chase Profits from Destruction in Appalachiahttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/gloria-rubin/jpmorgan-chase-profits-fr_b_416262.html

Remember the bank bailouts? The billions of tax dollars that went to those behemoth institutions? Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, said recently that his investment bank may have had its "finest year ever." What he didn't highlight was that JPMorgan Chase's success is based, in part, on being the largest underwriter of coal companies that engage in mountaintop removal coal mining.

JPMorgan Chase has been funding six of the top eight coal mining companies responsible for mountaintop removal coal mining in the United States. Recently, its investment bank underwrote more than $1 billion in new financing to Massey Energy, the largest mountaintop removal coal mining company.

JPMorgan Chase states that its "environmental goal is to make a positive contribution to sustainable business practices by integrating environmental practices into our business model." Yet, Massey Energy has a deplorable environmental record, having violated the Clean Water Act no fewer than 4,500 times - resulting in a $30 million fine in 2008.

TSA is Funding Mind Reading Scannershttp://rawstory.com/2010/01/tsa-funding-airport-mindreading/

'Amid the media furor over the attempted Christmas Day attacks and a renewed political focus on enhancing airport security, attention is turning to a technological advancement that will have civil rights activists -- or, for that matter, anyone with a secret --seriously worried: Mind-reading machines. "As far-fetched as that sounds, systems that aim to get inside an evildoer's head are among the proposals floated by security experts thinking beyond the X-ray machines and metal detectors used on millions of passengers and bags each year," AP's Michael Tarm reports. Tarm focuses on an Israeli company called WeCU Technologies (as in "we see you"), which is building a system that would turn airport waiting areas into arenas for Pavlovian behavioral tests.'

The Coming Fury Of An Angry Americahttp://just-another-inside-job.blogspot.com/2010/01/coming-fury-of-angry-america.html

'The American middle class will not spend its way out of disaster, if only because it can't. There are no savings. The house is worthless. The credit cards are gone. Jobs are disappearing. Today is bad and tomorrow looks worse. People are nervous, frightened, worried. They are behind in the mortgage, and struggle to make health insurance payments.  All the while, they watch the stock market explode, the bonuses arrogantly roll on, and their government lie to their faces that the "recovery" is underway. China is booming, so is India and Brazil. Beneath the hope, patriotism, and the flag, the American middle class can feel it all slipping away.'

Exchange with Guardian journalist about US drone strikeshttp://www.uruknet.info/index.php?p=m61980&hd=&size=1&l=e

Below is an email exchange I had with the Guardian's Declan Walsh (declan.walsh@guardian.co.uk) regarding Pakistani public opinion and the continuing US drone strikes [...] You say it is "demonstrably true" that the "Pakistani public has tolerated" the US drone attacks. This seems to be a very strange way of interpreting the three polls that show around 70 percent of Pakistanis oppose the US drone attacks. What would the Pakistani public have to do to actually oppose the attacks, and be reported as opposing the attacks, in your eyes?
