How Edmund de Rothschild Managed to Let 179 Governments Pay Him for Grasping Up to 30% of the Earth http://euro-med.dk/?cat=5

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) unites 179 member governments — in partnership with international institutions, NGOs, and the private sector — to address global environmental issues. Established in 1991, the GEF is today the largest funder of projects to improve the global environment. The GEF has allocated $8.8 billion, supplemented by more than $38.7 billion in cofinancing, for more than 2,400 projects in more than 165 developing countries.

The GEF partnership includes 10 agencies: 1. the UN Development Programme (David Rothschild consultant/Nigeria); 2. the UN Environment Programme (UNEP); 3. the World Bank; 4. the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (A Rockefeller-partner organisation) ; 5. the UN Industrial Development Organization; 6. the African Development Bank; 7. the Asian Development Bank; 8. the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; 9. the Inter-American Development Bank (David Rothschild consultant); 10. and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

Here is how it works: The Telegraph 2. Jan 2010: NM Rothschild is poised to earn tens of millions of pounds … (by).. further strengthening the close bond between the Rothschild family and Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, the bank advising (Deripaska´s firm) Rusal. Deripaska (an intimate friend of Nathan Rothschild´s) was able to tap the World Bank's International Finance Corporation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (GEF) for a loan of $150m, to his Basic Element vehicle in 2006. Wikipedia: Deripaska is one of 16 global business leaders who drafted CEO Climate Policy Recommendations to G8 Leaders, a document outlining international business community's proposals to effectively tackle global warming.

Dutch Iraq inquiry – a slap on the wrist for the government http://www.statewatch.org/news/2010/feb/01netherlands-iraq-inquiry.htm

In January of this year the Davids committee presented its very thorough report. The main conclusion was that the military action of the US and the UK against Iraq “had no sound mandate under international law.” The famous US Security Council Resolution 1441 “cannot reasonably be interpreted (as the government did) as authorising individual Member States to use military force to compel Iraq to comply with the Security Council’s resolutions without authorisation from the Security Council”.

The committee added to this that as it was inevitable that the US/British action would result in regime change – a policy the Dutch government had explicitly rejected – the political support of Mr. Balkenende and his team for the war was “to some extent disingenuous.” One of the true reasons for the Dutch position were “the largely unspoken Atlantic solidarity considerations.”This harsh judgment on the government can only be seen as a robust slap on the wrist of the active politicians for a policy that is considered highly irresponsible and destabilizing by parts of the Dutch elite.

There was great consternation in government circles. As yet there is still not a definitive official reaction but a leaked concept suggests that Mr. Balkenende will have to eat humble-pie. The government reaction will say that its position of 2003 “has found insufficient support with the international community and is no longer accepted by other countries.” The government now accepts that “for such an action a more adequate mandate under international law would have been necessary.”

A Greek bailout: is it legally possible and what will it cost to EU taxpayers? http://www.openeurope.org.uk/media-centre/pressrelease.aspx?pressreleaseid=132

Open Europe’s Pieter Cleppe said: “Bailing out Greece will send the eurozone and the EU down the wrong path. It will send the signal that mismanaging a country’s economy is no big deal, which in turn would undercut Europe’s budget discipline at a time when we need restraint more than ever.”

“A large scale bailout would make taxpayers across Europe liable, either directly or indirectly, for the mistakes of a government over which they have no democratic control. Such a policy simply isn’t reasonable and lacks public support.”

“This crisis has revealed the inherent frailties of the euro. The public has never been asked, and is understandably reluctant, to give a mandate for a formal mechanism of fiscal transfers from the richer to the poorer members of the eurozone. Without such a mechanism, a one-off bailout will only see the euro project through to the next crisis and leave its long term problems unsolved.”

Italy, the hushing state http://www.inaltreparole.net/en/journalism/bavaglioinformazione100210.html

No more political tv-show during the 30 days preceding the Italian election. This is what the Commission for Rai Supervision has established, yesterday, while it was trying to make precise rules on equal conditions of presence in TV for the regional elections on 28 and 29 March. But with the new rules the information shows will disappear when, before the elections, they should inform even more.

Once again the political world crosses the independence of journalism. The National Council of the Order of Journalists, today asked the parliament committee to reconsider its decision and to allow citizens the right to be informed.

The Commission for Rai supervision has established, yesterday, new rules for the political tv programs during election period. So 30 days before the election, in Italy there won't be any real information on public television. The Rai will force us not to know the reality.

America has impressive record of starting wars; dismal one of ending them well http://therearenosunglasses.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/america-has-an-impressive-record-of-starting-wars-but-a-dismal-one-of-ending-them-well/

The impetus for weaning Americans away from their infatuation with war, if it comes at all, will come from within the officer corps. It certainly won’t come from within the political establishment, the Republican Party gripped by militaristic fantasies and Democrats too fearful of being tagged as weak on national security to exercise independent judgment.

Were there any lingering doubt on that score, Barack Obama, the self-described agent of change, removed it once and for all: by upping the ante in Afghanistan he has put his personal imprimatur on the Long War.

anti-Chavez and anti-Venezuela hate-propaganda is being propagated by mainstream corporate media outlets in the USA http://www.vheadline.com/readnews.asp?id=88325

They're at it again … as in 2002 and 2003 … anti-Chavez and anti-Venezuela hate-propaganda is being propagated by mainstream corporate media outlets in the USA and by US-based "think-tanks" and "analysts" and "experts."

There have been hundreds of articles in the last few weeks attacking Chavez in any fashion possible … but some of the articles, even if they are opinion articles, sound more like hate articles.

I have chosen one recent Miami Herald opinion article (below) as an example of not only how corporate media in the USA (and Canada and much of Europe) are very willing to promote hate against someone whom their readers know little or nothing about while at the same time recounting complete lies about a country that most of their readers have never visited or can’t even pinpoint on a map.

The US Military: A Mindset of Barbarism http://dahrjamailiraq.com/the-us-military-a-mindset-of-barbarism

On December 27, in the eastern Kunar region of Afghanistan, ten Afghans, eight of whom were schoolchildren, were dragged from their beds and shot by US forces during a nighttime raid. Afghan government investigators said the eight students were aged from 11 to 17 years.

This incident is but one example of countless atrocities US military personnel have carried out in the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, US military personnel torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib, Iraqi civilians suffering the violence meted out by US forces, or US forces detaining schoolchildren in Baghdad, the list of atrocities is seemingly endless.

EU trade commissioner declares confidence in Colombia http://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/news/8139-eu-trade-commissioner-declares-confidence-in-colombia.html

"Certainly there are problems with violence, and it is also true that they can not be solved overnight. But, realistically, we must recognize that efforts are being made for democracy," said the Belgian commissioner.

This follows news that an EU-Colombia free trade agreement has been met with opposition by human rights and workers' rights groups in Colombia.(1-see below)

comment-heres why the FTA(free trade agreement) went ahead... EU  Trade Commission bta's with region and  Andean countries http://ec.europa.eu/trade/creating-opportunities/bilateral-relations/regions/andean/

For the Andean region, the EU is the second largest trading partner after the US. For the EU, the Andean Group is totalling 0.6% of share of EU world trade in 2008. EU imports from Andean countries are primary products: agricultural products (47.5%); fuels and mining products (41.1%)

British NGO teams up with Colombian campaigners to oppose the EU-Colombia free trade agreement.Justice for Colombia (JFC), a group that campaigns for workers' rights in the Latin American nation, led a group of left-wing Colombian campaigners to meet European commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and members of the European Parliament in Brussels this week, reports Tribune magazine. The delegation intended to highlight human rights abuses in Colombia and persuade MEPs to vote against the proposed trade deal. JFC secretary Liam Craig-Best said that “They’re talking about clauses that the Colombians will have to respect human rights. They seem absolutely unable to give any definition of what the Colombian government have to do in order to trigger some sort of sanction.” JFC further stated that 49 trade unionists were killed in Colombia in 2008, and that most of the killers were not brought to justice. Colombian Senator Jorge Robledo, who attended the hearing, highlighted the fact that the U.S. and Canada have not yet passed trade agreements with Colombia, and stated that “It would be very grave if the EU absolved Uribe in human rights when neither the US nor Canada absolve him. Does Europe put commerce before human rights?” Also scheduled to attend were the leader of the Central Unitaria de Trabajdores de Colombia (CUT), and Yessika Hoyos, daughter of a murdered Colombian trade union leader, who is now a prominent human rights activist.

Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world to be a trade unionist. In 2008, 49 trade unionists were murdered, a 25% increase from the year before. This escalation in violence directly contradicts the claims of the Uribe regime that the situation is improving.
