Luis Posada Carriles trial for perjury, fraud is set for March 1 http://www.elpasotimes.com/ci_14346360

The Posada trial is expected to draw national and international attention, along with protesters who believe the federal government has not zealously prosecuted Posada because he is anti-Castro.The CIA, meanwhile, has long been involved in Posada's activities, court documents indicate. An unclassified summary of the CIA's relationship with Posada states the agency's first contact with him was in 1961 in connection with planning for the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Posada was a "paid asset" of the CIA from 1965 to 1967, and again from 1968 to 1974, the summary said. The CIA had intermittent contact with Posada from 1974 until 1976, the summary said. The agency ceased its relationship with Posada in 1976, the year a pair of bombs exploded on a Cuban passenger jetliner en route from Barbados to Cuba, killing all 73 people on board. The Cuban Five are regarded as heroes by the Cuban government. Posada is wanted in Cuba and Venezuela, where officials suspect he planned the 1976 bombing.

Gloria La Riva, national coordinator of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, said the Cuban Five and Posada were inextricably linked. The US government should prosecute Posada for the bombing of the Cuban jetliner in 1976, or extradite him to face charges in Cuba or Venezuela, but has chosen not to because of the long relationship between Posada and the United States, she said. "We're trying to show that the US government has actually aided and abetted this terrorist organization against Cuba and people like Posada, while they have fully prosecuted people like the Cuban Five," she said.

Meeting with Dr. Juan Almendares Dr. Almendares has been a figure in the Honduran social movements since the 1970’s. http://hondurasresists.blogspot.com/

He told us that he currently has three projects: One is the resistance; second, the environmental struggle against mining companies and multinationals; and the third is the CPTRT, a center for prevention of torture, and denouncing military and police brutality. He also continues to run a medical clinic for the poor.

Dr. Almendares continued working on health issues, the environment and for social justice in the poor communities of Honduras. He has been very active with communities opposed to the mining concessions near Lake YoYoa. The communities there came to him and wanted him to so a medical brigade visit, “The first thing I saw is at the entrance to the mine was a military battalion, I was not allowed to visit homes of any workers, so I did brigade in the primary school. This kind of mining is most highly contaminating and the main companies are from the U.S. and Canada. We organized a strong movement on the mining issue and it continues”

184 Communes Currently in Formation in Venezuela http://upsidedownworld.org/main/venezuela-archives-35/2355-184-communes-currently-in-formation-in-venezuela

A spokesperson for the Communal Council Colinas de la Dignidad (hills of dignity), Morelbis Aguiar, explained that a commune, which is made up of several communal councils, is local, community self-government, “where we, the people, we are the ones who decide what our community wants and what the improvements are that we want to work on in our area.”

“It’s not the state that comes and decides; its us who decides which street we need, where to locate the university or high school… We decide what we’re going to do with the financing and resources that the revolutionary government gives us,” Aguiar continued.

The minister for communes, Erika Farias, said there are 184 communes in construction, 93 in rural areas, 65 in urban areas, and 26 mixed. According to the minister, the communes together have so far carried out 706 projects, involving an investment of over BsF 100 million (US$ 23 million)

Israel’s campaign against pro-Palestinian foreigners http://warincontext.org/2010/02/09/israels-campaign-against-pro-palestinian-foreigners/

Australia’s ABC News reports on the latest arrests in an expanding campaign against foreign activists:The lawyer for an Australian woman arrested in the West Bank says her detention is part of a campaign by the Israeli government to silence pro-Palestinian foreigners.Israeli soldiers arrested Bridgette Chappell, 22, in a pre-dawn raid and was held in an immigration jail in Israel. A court has since agreed to release her on bail provided she does not return to the West Bank.

The Israeli government says Ms Chappell, who was studying Arabic and politics at Birzeit University in the West Bank, was arrested for overstaying her visa. But she was also active in the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) – a pro-Palestinian organisation committed to resisting Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.Ms Chappell was sharing an ISM apartment with two other activists – a Spanish woman and an American man, Ryan Olander.Mr Olander says about 12 soldiers broke down the door during the night and burst in with M16 rifles.

Army National Guard Deployed In Pittsburgh http://www.wpxi.com/news/22498875/detail.html

The soldiers are stationed at Brashear High School in Beechview because of its large parking lot, gymnasium and close proximity to the armory a few blocks away.

“This mission was approved by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agent, so we work hand-in-hand, several military relations there,” said Grey Berrier. “I know there’s a lot of concern, if you will, about this impending snowstorm that may be coming in on the heels.”The 260 soldiers will be staying in Pittsburgh indefinitely until they get word they can head back.

Nigerian Security Forces Execute Civilians  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlpZr8IRUcY

Reports of extrajudicial killings by Nigerian security forces circulated widely in the aftermath of clashes last year between the police and members of Boko Haram, a group that called for the enforcement of Islamic law, or sharia, across Nigeria.

Now Al Jazeera has obtained exclusive footage that appears to show Nigerian security forces ordering a number of people to lie in the road and then shooting them at close range.Human rights groups allege that many of those killed following the clashes were unarmed civilians. The footage obtained by Al Jazeera would appear to confirm those accusations.

Another American, Jennifer Douglas, helped her husband, Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria, smuggle “$40 million in suspect funds into the United States, through wire transfers sent by offshore corporations to U.S. bank accounts,” according to the committee report. The Securities and Exchange Commission has accused Douglas of taking $2 million in bribes from Siemens AG, a major German corporation. Douglas eventually pled guilty to criminal charges and settled a lawsuit stemming from the bribery charges.   The tales of corruption go beyond involvement of individual Americans and even implicate upstanding institutions of higher learning. American University in Washington, DC, reportedly accepted $14 million over a five-year period from Abubakar through two offshore corporations for consulting that helped develop a Nigerian university. University officials never asked about the source of the funds, telling committee investigators it wasn’t required under the law.

'Avatar' a reality for Indian tribe fighting mining company http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/02/09/india.avatar.tribe/?hpt=C1

" 'Like the Na'vi of 'Avatar', the Dongria Kondh(s) are also at risk, as their lands are set to be mined by Vedanta Resources who will stop at nothing to achieve their aims,' said Survival director Stephen Corry in a statement. 'The mine will destroy the forests on which the Dongria Kondh(s) depend and wreck the lives of thousands of other Kondh tribal people living in the area.' " " 'If Vedanta mines the mountain, the water will dry up. In the Niyamgiri forests, there are tigers, bears, monkeys and wild boar. All kinds of other animals. We all live together. Where will the animals go to drink? Where will we go to drink?' asked a young man in a video posted on Survival International's Web site. 'We won't allow Vedanta to take over our hills. We won't allow them to mine any part of our mountain. We won't allow Vedanta to touch our water,' he said."

US troops eating scorpions, drinking cobra blood: Report http://www.indiareport.com/India-usa-uk-news/latest-news/756334/International/2/20/2

US troops have been eating scorpions and drinking cobra blood at a military exercise camp in Thailand, a British newspaper has claimed.According to&aposThe Sun', during the exercise, Thai Navy instructors have been teaching the American troops how to crunch lizards, catch and kill cobras, and then cut off their heads before drinking the blood straight from the body. However, animal rights campaigners have condemned the war games, involving 14,000 troops from countries, including Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia.

Animal Aid Director Andrew Tyler said:"It&aposs a macho and stupid exercise that seems to have been carried out as some sort of sick entertainment. These might be small creatures but to kill and eat them needlessly is wrong. It&aposs the joy they get from it that&aposs most worrying."Anyway, American soldiers are never going to need to eat scorpions. They don&apost go anywhere without flying in cheeseburgers."But, US Ambassador to Thailand Eric John said:"The exercise is designed to enhance skills needed for peace and stability operations. The work our troops have done here can help to save lives.

Al Qaeda Attacks on U.S. Soil: Brought to you by the military industrial complex http://blogs.alternet.org/davisfleetwood/2010/02/09/al-qaeda-attacks-on-u-s-soil-brought-to-you-by-the-military-industrial-complex/

Currently our strategy includes covert operations including propaganda campaigns, assassinations, and election tampering – and I am not just talking about in the U.S., we do this overseas as well. When that fails we can resort to the indiscriminate bombings against sovereign nations that pose no security threat to us. It matters not, for the time being, that this is the very textbook definition for a war crime; we just like to call it the Bush Doctrine.

But didn’t the American people vote for change? And isn’t anyone asking why we are now engaged in a war that will never end? Someone somewhere will always be a terrorist. We have smart people running this country. They certainly know that it is the shift in foreign policy of the United States of America starting with the day we dropped the Bomb on Hiroshima that is the cause of our war on terror.

Once the Manhattan project opened the Pandora’s box of nuclear annihilation, forgein policy became less about right and wrong, and more about a very profitable game of chess. The military industrial complex profits by keeping the endgame going for as long as possible- and nothing has proven effective is stopping it.

Peter Eigen: How to expose the corrupt http://www.ted.com/talks/peter_eigen_how_to_expose_the_corrupt.html

Some of the world's most baffling social problems, says Peter Eigen, can be traced to systematic, pervasive government corruption, hand-in-glove with global companies. At TEDxBerlin, Eigen describes the thrilling counter-attack led by his organization Transparency International.

As a director of the World Bank in Nairobi, Peter Eigen saw firsthand how devastating corruption can be. He's the founder of Transparency International

California Toxic Waste Dump Feared to Cause Fatal Birth Defects http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/02/california-toxic-waste-dump-fatal-birth-defects.php

There's been an unusual spate of tragic birth defects over the last year in the central California town of Kettleman City. Five out of the twenty children born in just over a year have been born with birth defects or "other maladies, including cleft palate and cleft lip," the LA Times reports.

Three of them died, and the other two are receiving medical treatment. That's a full twenty-five percent of children born with serious birth defects. It's certainly enough to leave doctors and investigators suspicious that it's not coincidence--and the prime suspect is a 1,600 acre toxic waste dump near the town; one that's also set for expansion.

Victory! India bans planting of first GMO food crop ( Bt brinjal) http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_round_up/413214/india_bans_planting_of_first_gm_food_crop.html

This is big news! Should this have been approved, Monsanto would have gotten its foot in the door to push other GM crops on India to the detriment of its biodiversity and the livelihood of farmers.

Due to the resistance of farmers, consumers, environmentalists and the protests against it there is at least a tentative victory on this being stopped.Thank you India!

Iran warns it will 'punch' the West on Islamic revolution anniversary  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/7193935/Iran-warns-it-will-punch-the-West-on-Islamic-revolution-anniversary.html

"The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned," Khamenei, who is also Iran's commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel.

His comments came as Iran said it would begin to produce higher enriched uranium from Tuesday, in defiance of Western powers trying to ensure the country's nuclear drive is peaceful.

Tritium hot zone expands http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20100209/NEWS02/2090342/1003/NEWS02

The Department of Health said late Monday there appears to be "a very large area" at the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor contaminated with radioactive tritium, and contamination levels continue to rise.

Because the area is so big, according to William Irwin, radiological health chief, there are many potential sources of radioactive water at this particularly high concentration of tritium.

Comment: Sure Obama, let's build more nuclear power plants! Let's risk ALL life on Earth!
