Holding their breath for Palm justice http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/03/10/holding-their-breath-for-palm-justice/

Another day, another inquest into the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee — an Aboriginal man killed in the Palm Island Police Station in 2004, is under way. The findings of the second inquest (the first was abandoned) were set aside last year after a court found Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley could not have inflicted the fatal injuries simply by punching Mulrunji Doomadgee. For his part, Hurley has admitted killing Mulrunji, but claims it was a tragic accident.Mulrunji was found dead on the floor of a cell in the station less than an hour after he was arrested by Hurley on the morning of November 19, 2004 for swearing. He had suffered four broken ribs, bruising to the head, a torn portal vein and his liver had been almost cut in two.

A week later, Aboriginal residents torched the police station, courthouse and Hurley police barracks amid claims of a cover-up, claims that later proved true. This latest inquest is being watched by Aboriginal people around the nation for one simple reason: it represents the best chance yet for justice over an Aboriginal death in custody. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody looked into the deaths of 99 Aboriginal people. All of them, apparently, did it to themselves, because while there were deep suspicions of occasional foul play, no one was ever charged over a single death. Thus far, Hurley has escaped sanction, and has even received a promotion to the rank of Acting Inspector.

AUDIO-Genetically Guilty Monsanto faces new legal setback in Paraguay http://www.radiomundoreal.fm/Genetically-Guilty?lang=es

While there are still repercussions of the questions raised at the events parallel to the summit of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held in Guadalajara, Mexico, the US seed company Monsanto added a new controversy to its already bad record. This time it was in Paraguay, where a judge of Children and Adolescents rejected an amparo appeal filed by the corporation, which aims to obtain an environmental license to experiment with genetically modified maize. The local newspaper Ultima Hora reported this week that the judge confirmed the position of the Secretariat of Environment (Seam), of carrying out a public hearing before granting the license.

The legal action had been filed by Monsanto to speed up the beginning of experimentation with genetically modified maize in Itapua and Guaira departments, to the east of the country. This was not the only negative ruling for Monsanto reported in the recent hours. Reuters news agency published declarations of a councilor of the European Court of Justice this morning, saying that the patent Monsanto holds for its Roundup Ready soy should not be extended to cover the soy flour exports to the bloc. The final ruling of this legal battle started by the seed company to secure the payment of royalties, will be known by the end of this year.

The dispute was about 4.1 billion dollars for the annual commercialization of Argentine soy to the European Union, the international agency informed. Meanwhile, also in Europe, it became known on March 2nd that the European Commission approved harvesting a genetically modified potato in the EU that will be produced by German transnational corporation BASF.According to reports of EFE news agency, the GM variety will be destined to the production of starch for the paper industry. The latest such authorization had been approved by the Executive of the European Union in 1998 and the beneficiary had been Monsanto, for its MON 810 variety.

Sixteen towns and cities iSixteen towns and cities in six states of the Mid West of the United Stated filed a class action against the Swiss agribusiness corporation.Syngenta for polluting the drinking water supply with the herbicide known as atrazinen six states of the Mid West of the United Stated filed a class action against the Swiss agribusiness corporation Syngenta for polluting the drinking water supply with the herbicide known as atrazine. The plaintiffs expect the company to pay what it takes to filter the chemical substance from the water used for human consumption, something which has cost tens of millions of dollars to the citizens, while the company gets huge profits for selling the herbicide.

Atrazine is a commonly used component in the US, where it is mostly used in crops like corn, sorghum and sugar cane. But both Syngenta and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say the concentrations of the herbicide in drinking water do not damage human health. This statement is not shared by the plaintiffs, who have information taken from samples of the water supply that point that the atrazine concentrations are three fold above the standards determined by the EPA.

AP Interview: Silva says Iran sanctions dangerous http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/L/LT_BRAZIL_SILVA?SITE=VTBUR&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Brazilian President Lula da Silva talks about last week’s meetings with Hillary Clinton, again stating his country’s strong opposition to a new round of sanctions against Iran. Such a move, Lula insists, could lead to war and would certainly push Iran further away from any sort of negotiations process. “We don't want to repeat in Iran what happened in Iraq. It's not prudent for the world, it's not prudent for Iran," Silva tells the news agency.

The charismatic Brazilian president said the Iran standoff and the struggling Mideast peace process are “proof that the world's traditional powers aren't able to solve problems on their own.” “Who decided that the United States, France, England, China and Russia represent the collective aspirations of our planet, the new geopolitics, the new world order - with nations that were poor yesterday but today are in the midst of extraordinary economic growth?" he asks

Disabled and Poor on BC Government Hit List http://mostlywater.org/disabled_again_bc_liberals_hit_list_opinion

The B.C. Coalition of People with Disabilities is stunned by the government cuts, and knows they won't save any money."Already inadequate support for people with disabilities is being cut further," the Coalition's Robin Loxton said in an interview Friday. "In the long term it will cost the health system more and will not save money."Why? Because poor people and those with disabilities who are deprived of healthy food and shelter get sick -- so sick they end up in hospital for expensive treatment.Coalition executive director Jane Dyson says things are already bad enough for those on disability benefits."People are using part of their food money to pay for housing, so they are already unhealthy," Dyson said, adding that many people receiving disability support have diabetes, which is further aggravated by eating low cost food.1,400 people shoved further to margins

The $75 shelter cut will affect about 1,400 people, according to the government, and Loxton says that will particularly hurt the homeless."Homeless people have shelter-related costs," he said. "I don't know how people do it -- the cost of everything is going up and they can barely afford to live."But the cuts don't stop there. Also being slashed are glucometers for diabetics, and pre-made foot orthotics, while dental services and x-rays will be reduced and chiropractic and physiotherapy services eliminated unless required for a "life threatening health need."Presumably for this government not being able to walk isn't life threatening. But these cuts most certainly are, not to mention utterly rotten.

IMF Recognizes Honduran Government http://www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=353294&CategoryId=23558

The International Monetary Fund said Friday that it recognizes President Porfirio Lobo’s administration as the legitimate government of Honduras and will allow Tegucigalpa to access $160 million in funds that were frozen after last June’s coup in the Central American country.“I wish to confirm that the IMF recognizes and will deal with the Porfirio Lobo administration as the government of Honduras,” fund spokesman Andreas Adriano told Efe.

The president of the Honduran central bank, Maria Elena Mondragon, had anticipated the announcement with a statement from El Salvador on Friday. “Honduras’ relations with the IMF are now formalized. This is excellent news,” she told Tegucigalpa’s radio HRN.This money goes to Honduras as part of a world distribution of $250 billion to inject liquidity into central banks, a measure designed to ease the effects of the global recession. The IMF decision “means that Honduras can make use of all its rights as a member of the fund,” Adriano said.

20 Signs That The United States Is Rapidly Becoming A Totalitarian Big Brother Police State http://thisistheendoftheworldasweknowit.com/archives/20-signs-that-the-united-states-is-rapidly-becoming-a-totalitarian-big-brother-police-state

#1) A new bill being pushed by Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman would allow the U.S. military to round up large numbers of Americans and detain them indefinitely without a trial if they "pose a threat" or if they have "potential intelligence value" or for any other reason the President of the United States "considers appropriate". #2) Lawmakers in Washington D.C. working to create a new immigration bill have decided on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would be required to obtain.

#3) Barack Obama is backing a plan to create a national database to store the DNA of people who have been arrested but not necessarily convicted of a crime. #4) Just to get on an airplane, Americans will now have to go through new full-body scanners that reveal every detail of our exposed bodies to airport security officials. #5) If that wasn't bad enough, the Transportation Security Administration has announced that airport screeners will begin roving through airports randomly taking chemical swabs from passengers and their bags to check for explosives. #6) Starting this upcoming December, some passengers on Canadian airlines flying to, from or even over the United States without ever landing there, will only be allowed to board their flights once the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has determined they are not terrorists.

#7) Organic milk is such a threat that the FDA has been conducting military style raids on Amish farmers in Pennsylvania. #8) An NYPD officer has broken his silence and has confessed that innocent citizens are being set up and falsely arrested and ticketed in order to meet quotas. #9) A growing number of police departments across the U.S. are turning to mobile camera systems in order to fight motor vehicle theft and identify unregistered cars. #10) For decades, Arizona has been known as "the sunset state", but lately many frustrated residents have started calling it "the surveillance state".

Former CIA Pilot Tells of Guns and Drugs Shipments http://salem-news.com/articles/march082010/plumlee-sabow-ro-tk.php

The truth is that experts outside of the Defense Department believe that the forensic evidence supports that Colonel Sabow was murdered. According to Dr. David Sabow MD, his brother, the motive was to prevent him from telling about the shipments of cocaine into the U.S. to fund the Contra war in the 80s.

"These trips were approved by military intelligence personnel attached to the Pentagon, with CIA logistical support. They were made in total secrecy to the extent that other government agencies were not aware of the existence of these flights, or of the operation. The pilots were given a specific coded transponder number to squawk so their aircraft would not be challenged by U.S. Customs aircraft when patrolling the U.S. border." - Former CIA pilot Tosh Plumlee

70-year-old woman "buried alive by property developers after refusing to move" http://tiny.cc/TT7Yb

A 70-year-old Chinese grandmother who was attempting to prevent a demolition team from knocking down her house in the central province of Hubei was allegedly beaten with a wooden stick and pushed into a ditch surrounding the property by workers.A bulldozer then covered Wang Cuyen with earth, burying her alive. She died before relatives could dig her out.

Though the Chinese government has said that property developers must not force residents out of their home using violence or by cutting off their water and electricity supply, three policemen helped supervise the demolition team while Mrs Wang was buried, but did not apparently step in to help. In later protests, local residents tore off the police officers' badges.
