In May 2010, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad was made member of the board of directors of UAE-based Ras Al Khaimah Petroleum (RAK), and on 16 June was nominated to the board of the Norwegian oil company Det Norske Oljeselskap (DNO).Born in Afghanistan, where his father was adviser to King Mohammed Zahir Shah, Mr. Khalilzad studied at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon where he befriended another Afghan student,

Hamid Kharzai (whose father was Parliament Deputy Speaker under King Zahir). During this period both men were approached by the CIA, which they later joined. It was also at the American University in Beirut that Khalilzad met Cheryl Benand, his future wife.He received his Ph.D at the University of Chicago, where he studied closely with Albert Wohlstetter (a prominent nuclear deterrent thinker); Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle were among his fellow-students.
