The 1980s saw several cases in the U.S. of American and Israeli companies and Israeli citizens attempting to buy technology and equipment for military industries here. One case that garnered notoreity involved Milco, a company owned by the Israeli businessman Arnon Milchan.

The firm and its manager Richard Smith were indicted for selling Israel equipment used for medical purposes and nuclear weapons, but the case against Milchan was closed early on. Smith fled the U.S., was found in Spain three years ago and paid a large fine in a plea bargain that allowed him to return to the country.
