Coal Ash Dump Sites Polluting Drinking Water across US with Heavy Metals and Arsenic http://coto2.wordpress.com/2010/08/29/coal-ash-dump-sites-polluting-drinking-water-across-us-with-heavy-metals-and-arsenic/#more-10430

A new study has identified 39 additional coal ash dumpsites in 21 states that are contaminating water supplies with heavy metals, showing the government is inadequately monitoring these disposal sites and lax at regulating the toxic waste. The study is entitled IN HARM’S WAY: Lack of Federal Coal Ash Regulations Endangers Americans and Their Environment and was released just days before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) starts a series of hearings across the U.S. to consider regulation of toxic coal ash waste.

CISPES disrupts Pacific Rim shareholders meeting in Vancouver http://www.cispes.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=737&Itemid=1

Pacific Rim Mining held its annual general meeting in downtown Vancouver today - attended by a few directors and more than a dozen protesters. Most of the demonstrators were from the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) in the US Pacific Northwest. They wore tags describing themselves as shareholders in democracy, human rights, access to clean water and "our future."

Vancouver-based Pacific Rim Mining is suing the people of El Salvador after the government refused to allow it to mine using methods that would poison El Salvador's rivers. The suit for millions in "lost profits" has been filed under the Central American Free Trade Agreement. CISPES is calling on the company's directors to drop the suit. Two CISPES representatives were allowed into the meeting, then ejected after they tried to speak.

IV Americas Social Forum: Grassroots Organizations Are Still in Charge http://www.cipamericas.org/archives/2996

Today, social movements are uniting to defend common resources and criticize extractivism. However, they are far from the unanimity characteristic of the period when rightwing governments prevailed in most South American countries and are separated when it comes time to evaluate progressive and leftist governments.

Costa Rica: The lowest form of military aggression (Video) http://www.voltairenet.org/article166851.html

On 1 July 2010, Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly authorized the U.S. military to undertake policing duties in Costa Rica, based on an expired “Cooperation Agreement.” There is only one small problem: Costa Rica abolished its army in 1949 and since then has had no national military forces. Lawyer and Right to Peace advocate, Zamora BolaƱos, analyses the situation playing out in his country and extended regional ramifications.

A U.S. 'legacy of waste' in Iraq http://tvnewslies.org/tvnl/index.php/news/war/15732-a-us-legacy-of-waste-in-iraq.html

The shell of a prison that will never be used rises from the desert on the edge of this dusty town north of Baghdad, a hulking monument to the wasted promise of America's massive, $53-billion reconstruction effort in Iraq.Construction began in May 2004 at a time when U.S. money was pouring into the country. It quickly ran into huge cost overruns. Violence erupted in the area, and a manager was shot dead in his office. The Iraqi government said it didn't want or need the prison. In 2007 the project was abandoned, but only after $40 million of U.S. taxpayer money had been spent.

'Several months ago, a religious school in the illegal Israeli settlement of Immanuel was criticized for segregating white Jewish students from non-white Jewish students in classes. Originally, the school was fined for this policy of racial segregation, because the school was state funded. Now, the Israeli education ministry has agreed with the white parents' request to allow the school to continue with its racial discrimination under private funding. There is no law preventing racial discrimination by private organizations, even schools, in Israel.'

Deadly Fungus Spreading Across US and Canada http://www.naturalnews.com/029593_fungus_Canada.html

'A research study out of Duke University has found that a dangerous mutated form of an airborne fungus called Cryptococcus gattii is spreading across the Northwest United States and some parts of Western Canada. The fungus, which typically only infects people with autoimmune disorders and compromised immune systems, now seems to be infecting healthy people as well, worrying experts.

Published in PLoS Pathogens, a journal of the Public Library of Science, the report explains that the new fungus is currently infecting people across the Pacific Northwest region and its scope is continuing to expand. Though the fungus was originally discovered in tropical and subtropical regions, it is somehow thriving in temperate regions far different than its native home.'

Under the guise of "sustainability" the Foundation has been spearheading a multi-billion dollar effort to transform African into a GMO-friendly continent. Up to now AGRA spokespeople have been slippery, and frankly, contradictory about their stance on GMOs.

Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form).

ACTION ALERT: Pacific Rim shareholders meet today! http://www.cispes.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=735&Itemid=1

Today, the shareholders and Board of Directors of Pacific Rim Mining will meet for their Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, B.C. When the government and people of El Salvador stopped Pacific Rim’s gold mines from opening, this Canadian corporation opened a storefront in Nevada, and is now using the US-Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) to sue the Salvadoran government for hundreds of millions of dollars in ‘lost profits’.

The company has been telling their shareholders that they are still hopeful for a “resolution” with the Salvadoran government. However, after the 2009 elections, El Salvador finally has a democratic government that is responding to the people’s demands. On Saturday, the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes reiterated his public commitment: “I will not authorize any mining exploration or exploitation project” and he welcomed the process underway in the Legislative Assembly to pass a national ban on metallic mining.

Fresh off his Nobel-winning escalation of the war in Afghanistan, we now have this monument to world peace...

US 'Kill Team' Targeted Afghan Civilians http://previous.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=140156&sectionid=351020403

'Five US soldiers are charged with deliberately targeting Afghan civilians amid growing discontent over the rising civilian causalities in the war-torn country. The troopers allegedly killed three Afghans in Kandahar Province this year and they were charged with murder in June.Since then US army prosecutors have also filed additional charges of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder -- a plot that allegedly began when one soldier discussed how easy it would be to "toss a grenade" at Afghan civilians, The Seattle Times reported on Thursday. One of the soldiers had reportedly formed what has been called a "kill team" to randomly execute Afghan civilians while on petrol.'

Treasury Makes Shocking Admission: Program for Struggling Homeowners Just a Ploy to Enrich Big Banks http://www.alternet.org/action/147955

That's right: Treasury openly admitted that its only serious program purporting to help ordinary citizens was actually a cynical move to help Wall Street megabanks.'

Israel Buys $2bn In Jet & Diesel Fuel - Far Beyond Normal http://lataan.blogspot.com/2010/08/israel-orders-massive-military-fuel.html

'Three weeks ago the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) published a notice, as it is legally required to do, announcing that Israel has ordered massive quantities of various fuels suitable for military use, and in the case of the order for JP-8 jet fuel, suitable only for military use.The massive order is valued at some $2 billion and, as well as the 284 million gallons (1.075 billion litres) of JP-8 jet fuel, the order also includes 60 million gallons (227 million litres) of unleaded gasoline and 100 million gallons (378 million litres) of diesel fuel.

Last week I wrote of how it would not be possible for Israel to mount a ‘unilateral’ strike against Iran because Israel would require complete connivance and support for such a strike from the US. I explained, as I have in the past, how it would be necessary for the US to supply the massive amounts of fuel need for such a strike. If Israel were to strike Iran, Israel would only require the massive amounts of jet fuel and over a billion litres of jet fuel would be more that enough to do the job in practical terms.'

Something is rotten in the province of Alberta! And it's not just the tar sands. The attempt to protect the tar sands from criticism can be framed as a part of a broader effort to protect the 'rights' of private interests to profit from bitumen production.

Afghanistan Crisis Deepens: U.S., Canada and NATO Threaten to Extend War http://www.socialistproject.ca/bullet/407.php

On March 13, 2008, Canada's Parliament voted to extend the country's military “mission” in Afghanistan to July 2011. The motion by the minority Conservative government was supported by the opposition Liberals. The war makers correctly estimated that fixing an exit date would deflect mounting opposition to the war among the Canadian public and buy time for Canada's continued participation. Since then, the political and military situation in Afghanistan has continued to deteriorate for the occupying forces, and leading politicians are now floating proposals to extend Canada's claimed exit date for a military mission that already constitutes a gross violation of the national sovereignty and human rights of the Afghan people.

US releases watered-down, generic report to UN on human rights http://bsnorrell.blogspot.com/2010/08/us-releases-watered-down-generic-report.html

The United States has sent its report card for itself on human rights to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The US Periodic Review on Human Rights released Monday shows the Obama Administration giving itself a glossy, positive review on the issue of Native Americans and human rights. However, it appears that no one was actually listening at the US State Department's Listening Conferences, held to gather testimony for the report from Native Americans. In the US sanitized report, the US report fails to describe the ongoing environmental genocide, where corporations in collusion with the US government target Indian country with power plants, coal mines, oil and gas wells and experimental technology.

DO: I believe the situation in Latin America makes the US dialogue different from what it was before the Bush epoch. But US policy hasn’t been modified. I’d say that we need a dialogue based on the objective reality of Latin America. In Trinidad and Tobago, President Obama said he wanted our relations to be based on mutual respect, and so on. But how can anyone explain US involvement in the coup in Honduras just a few months later? And how can we explain the fact that the US was fighting to recognize the Honduran government? The only thing we see is that the US hasn’t changed in its essence. The world is changing, the US isn’t. This isn’t a problem just for Latin America, but rather for the entire world. This country has military and economic power, and at the same time, it’s not changing its expansionary and imperialistic policy.

Mining for El Salvador’s Gold—In Washington http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/41098/

Last week, however, these activists suffered a setback—not from their own government, but from an obscure tribunal in Washington, D.C. Two transnational mining companies have used rules in the “free trade” agreement between the United States and six countries in the region to sue the government of El Salvador They are demanding hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for the denial of mining permits. The first company to file suit, Pacific Rim, has just won the first stage of the proceedings by overcoming the Salvadoran government’s effort to get the case thrown out on jurisdictional grounds. The tribunal’s decision to give the green light to this controversial case should send shudders down the spines of advocates for the environment, community rights, and democracy.

US to Spend $1.3 Billion on Afghanistan Bases http://uruknet.info/?p=m69126&hd=&size=1&l=e

'The Pentagon is embarking on a major base construction effort in Afghanistan even as Obama administration and military officials are making it clear that the US "surge" will last well past the July 11 deadline for beginning a drawdown of US troops. The Washington Post reported Monday that the US Congress is preparing to pass legislation providing "$1.3 billion in additional fiscal 2011 funds for multiyear construction of military facilities in Afghanistan". These funds would cover, in part, $100 million expansions for each of three major US air bases in different parts of the country. These projects, the Post stated, are indicative of plans "to support increased US military operations well into the future".'

At least 13 other civilians were also reported wounded, including a number of other children. The large numbers of civilians (700 in 2009 alone) killed in the US drone strikes has fueled considerable anti-American sentiment in Pakistan. When pressed during a previous visit Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shrugged off concerns about the civilians, saying only “there’s a war going on".'

Obama and “free trade:” eight items of note and one obvious conclusion http://www.bilaterals.org/spip.php?article17932

Conclusion : From this recent history of Obama’s words and deeds with regards to “free trade” we should expect an offensive, similar in scope and scale to the US military escalation under way around the world, to obtain passage of the Colombia FTA, starting probably right after the November mid-term elections. It will probably be advertised as a coming to the defense of Colombia against the threat posed by Venezuela’s Chavez. Let’s get ready to battle against passage of the Colombia FTA.

Worse, areas where Colombian army units received the largest increases in U.S. assistance reported increased extrajudicial killings on average.

The Story of Obama: All in the Company (Part II) http://www.voltairenet.org/article166759.html

In the second part of his investigation Wayne Madsen focuses on Barack Obama’s mother and stepfather. He follows their footsteps as CIA assets from the University of Hawaii, home to some of the CIA’s blackest projects, to their activities in Indonesia where a vast US-sponsored anti-communist massacre was unfolding. It marked the start of globalisation in Asia and in the rest of the world. Unlike the Bush dynasty, Barack Obama has smartly concealed his own connections with the Agency and, in particular, those of his ancestors, until now. Madsen concludes with a question: Is Barack Obama a real-life “Manchurian Candidate?”

US Announces Second Fake End to Iraq War http://news.antiwar.com/2010/08/18/us-announces-second-fake-end-to-iraq-war/

'It was another of those great TV moments. Embedded reports filming as the “last” brigade of American troops in Iraq cross the border into Kuwait bringing over seven years of unhappy conflict to its final, conclusive end. America was, at last, at peace. But like so many other great TV moments, this one was a scripted fantasy, a fake exit done purely for political gain by an increasingly unpopular president trying to look like he is keeping at least one campaign promise. It was perhaps a different sort of scripted, mythical end to the Iraq War than the last one, the May 1, 2003 “Mission Accomplished” speech of President Bush, but it was no more real, as over 50,000 US troops remain on the ground in Iraq tonight.'

Who's Blowing Up Iran's Gas Pipelines? http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/concoughlin/100050959/whos-blowing-up-irans-gas-pipelines/

'In the past few weeks Iran’s gas infrastructure, which is central to the country’s energy requirements, has been hit by a series of unexplained explosions. The series of mysterious explosions began at the end of July when the state-owned Tehran Times reported that a pipeline carrying gas from Iran to Turkey had exploded near the eastern Turkish town of Dogubayazit. Iranian officials blamed the blast on Kurdish rebels.

This was followed earlier this month by reports in the Iranian press of an explosion in a gas pipeline on the outskirts of Tabriz. A few days later there was a more serious incident on August 4 when five people were killed when another gas pipeline exploded on the outskirts of the Pardis petrochemical plant. The explosion took place just a week after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had made an official visit to the complex. Finally, on August 10, a pipeline exploded in the city of Masjed Sleiman.'

Secretly Forced Brain Implants: Explosive Court Case http://www.examiner.com/human-rights-in-national/secretly-forced-brain-implants-explosive-court-case

'Few American doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists will break rank or brave the new world of high-tech electronic abuse some of their patients report but evidence mounts that increasing numbers of innocent citizens targeted for U.S. state-sponsored terror are being secretly brain implanted with U.S. RFID chips without their consent for no-touch torture and mind control plus experimentation. One man evidenced this in court; won his case; and now prepares for a continuationin federal court, due to be equally explosive.

RFID is abbreviation for Radio-frequency Identification, a misnomer due to the device functions consisting of far more than ID. It is used for remote technological harassment, torture and even assassination.

James Walbert, resident of Wichita, Kansas, proved his experience as a Targeted Individual under surveillance includes forcefully implanted RFID chips, including in his brain, and subsequent remote electronic abuse. Walbert told Sedgwick County, Kansas court panel that Jeremiah Redford threatened him with “jolts of radiation".'

It wasn’t too long ago that a partnership between the World Bank and its sister organisation the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in the deregulation of the telecommunications sector in some countries in the region was frowned upon. Critics called it a ‘conflict of interest’. Through multi-million dollar loans, the IFC—the World Bank’s private sector financing arm—was funding the Pacific expansion of Irish-owned Digicel. At the same time, the World Bank was offering policy and technical assistance to governments in the region interested in opening up their telecommunications market.Words like “double standard” and “inappropriate” were used to describe their involvement in the Pacific’s telecommunication market.

USA Criminalises Giving Humanitarian Aid to Gaza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUTsYgEFrVo&feature=player_embedded

USA makes it illegal to give aid to Gaza! In Holder vs. Humanitarian Law project, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional law that it is illegal to "knowingly provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization," overturning multiple lower court rulings that the law was too broad or vague. This terror-inducing "material support" and "resources" includes, but is not limited to humanitarian aid and non-violent resistance tactics. Under this law, humanitarian assistance on the recent Freedom Flotilla to Gaza could feasibly be legally charged and President Jimmy Carter's quest for Middle East peace, which involved some communication with "terrorists," could have quite possibly landed him behind bars.

An army captain, Guillermo Gordillo, confessed to his participation in the massacre, as did several paramilitary members who said they worked together with the military. The victims were killed by machete, and several of them dismembered.

The only way to deter it is to force it to pay for all the destruction it is causing in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq, in the same way Turkey has done. Only then, will it stop drumming up war against this or that Arab or Muslim country. The task of inquiries and investigation commissions is not only to find out the ‘mistakes’ which caused wars, but to know the objectives for which these mistakes have been made and to make those who promoted them pay the price. Aggressors should bring their war criminals to account, compensate their victims and rebuild the areas destroyed by their wars."

Towards a World War III Scenario? The Role of Israel in Triggering an Attack on Iran http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20584

'The stockpiling and deployment of advanced weapons systems directed against Iran started in the immediate wake of the 2003 bombing and invasion of Iraq. From the outset, these war plans were led by the US, in liaison with NATO and Israel.Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration identified Iran and Syria as the next stage of “the road map to war”. US military sources intimated that an aerial attack on Iran could involve a large scale deployment comparable to the US "shock and awe" bombing raids on Iraq in March 2003:"American air strikes on Iran would vastly exceed the scope of the 1981 Israeli attack on the Osiraq nuclear center in Iraq, and would more resemble the opening days of the 2003 air campaign against Iraq.'

But this isn't the only time that our military has been used to help businesses take control of the natural resources of a country. In fact, it's happened a lot more than you might think. Mike Papantonio talks about our war addiction, and how US corporations are helping to make these wars self-perpetuating, with David DeGraw, a founding member of the Amped Status blog.

Oil, Gas, and Canada-Colombia Free Trade https://nacla.org/node/6694

Following the hype of being deemed as one of the world's "fastest growing and most important energy development stories," Colombia put 168 oil and gas concession blocks on auction in June to foreign and national exploration and production companies. The Canadian energy corporations that led the charge to gobble up these concessions now stand to have preferential treatment in Colombia. The Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, signed into law in Canada in June, now only awaits Colombia finalization to go into effect.

US arms 'bonanza' in Middle East :: Israel and Saudis to buy advanced war planes :: http://usa.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/77259

Stephen Zunes, a US-based Middle East policy analyst, accused Washington of setting the stage for another “arms race” in the region....“This is a pattern we’ve seen before. The US offers Arab states expensive modern armaments, and then turns around to Israel and tells it it needs to have even better weapons to stay ahead in the race. Then the pressure again mounts on the Arab states. It’s a racket that has been a bonanza for US arms manufacturers,” he said.

'The US State Department has reacted with outrage today after the Iranian government offered to provide military aid to Lebanon to make up for what was lost when the US pulled all such aid yesterday.State Dept Spokesman Philip CrowleyIncredibly enough, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley suggested that Iran’s military aid would “compromise Lebanon’s sovereignty,” yet no similar concerns were voiced when the US was providing much larger amounts of aid to the exact same country. In fact, Crowley insisted US military aid had the opposite effect, and was actually helping “expand the capabilities of the government and thereby improve its sovereignty over its territory".'

US Planning a Coup d'Etat in Venezuela? Expanded US Military Presence in Colombia http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20562

'There's no way of knowing whether Chavez is really in danger or not, but don't be surprised if he is. After all, the US claims it has the right to kill anyone it sees as a threat to its national security, and Chavez ranks high on its list of threats. In any event, the warnings coincide with other unsettling developments. At a recent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), Colombian officials charged Chavez with harboring guerrillas on Venezuelan territory.

(The allegations could be used to justify a preemptive attack) Chavez reacted angrily to the accusations and broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia. But the row did not end there. Obama's nominee as US ambassador to Venezuela, Larry Palmer, decided to throw a little gas on the fire by backing-up Colombia's claims. Now the two countries are at loggerheads which seems to be what the Obama administration had in mind from the very beginning. US policy towards Venezuela has changed at all under Obama. If anything, it's gotten worse.'

After about ten minutes, she looks at the nearby physician observing her, and says, "God isn't coming back today. He's too busy. He won't be back here for weeks".'
