Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad condemned the western states for their support for the former Iraqi regime's chemical attacks on Iranian cities during the 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war on Iran, describing it as a clear instance and symbol of international terrorism. "Sardasht was the first region in the world which came under chemical attacks and the victims of the attacks were all civilian people," Ahmadinejad said in a message to a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the massacre of the Iranian citizens by the former Ba'ath regime's chemical attacks on the city.

"The chemical weapons which were supplied by the western countries to the former Iraqi Ba'ath regime were used to massacre the innocent and defenseless people of Sardasht region, and this is a symbol of international terrorism by the West," he added.New documents recently disclosed by the US National Security Archive revealed that Washington had supported the use of chemical weapons against Iran by the former Iraqi regime.

The documents show that Washington attempted to block a resolution proposed by Iran to condemn the use of chemical weapons by Iraq. In 1984, Iran submitted a draft resolution asking the UN to condemn Baghdad's use of chemical weapons during the Iraqi imposed war on Tehran. According to the released document, the US ordered its delegate to the UN to "work to develop general Western position in support of a motion to take no decision" on Iran's draft.
