Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a phone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez, voiced satisfaction with the improvement of Chavez's health, and reiterated that Iran will strongly maintain its alliance with Venezuela against imperialism. "Under any conditions, Iran and Venezuela will stand together on the glorious path of campaign against imperialism and in the establishment of justice," Ahmadinejad said. He also said that Chavez is "the laud voice of free nations of the world", and wished rapid recovery and health for his Venezuelan counterpart.

Chavez, for his part, thanked Ahmadinejad for his call, and added that Iran and Venezuela can work together and with the other freedom-seeking nations to thwart the plots hatched by imperialists and their mercenaries and hirelings against free and independent nations. Chavez, 57, underwent an operation in Cuba on June 20 to remove a cancerous tumor and received a first round of chemotherapy in mid-July. He returned home to Caracas on Sunday after a weeklong stay in Havana, greeted by applause from cabinet officials and military officers.
