How Would Shaheed Complete His Report on Iran? http://www.rajanews.com/detail.asp?id=103878

While Iranian officials have strongly rejected the appointment of UN special rapporteur on human rights on Iran and called it an unacceptable political action by a number of member-states of UN Human Rights Council against the Islamic Republic of Iran; the question here is how Ahmad Shaheed would complete his report considering that he has not been to the country in the past and not allowed to visit it.Late June, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that Tehran would not allow the UN special envoy on human right issues to arrive in Iran as appointment of such an envoy for Iran was unacceptable.

Iran has not had a special rapporteur on human rights since 2002, but under the pressure of US and its allies in the UN Human Rights Council, a resolution to appoint a special rapporteur was adopted at the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 24, 2011.Under circumstances that the special rapporteur is thirsty to hear about the violation of human rights in Iran, the Iranian opposition groups in exile are bombarding Shaheed with false information on human rights issues in Iran.Although, even by a simple use of Google search engine, one can find the lies behind Iranian opposition claims about violation of human right by Tehran but the special rapporteur’s interest to complete his report with any kind of information can make it the most falsified report of the UN human right watchdog on Iran.

Some international observers believe that Shaheed’s interest in using every piece of information provided by the opposition in his report is because of his pro-Western way of thinking which he was awarded for.On 5 May 2009, the Washington-based think-tank, Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy conferred their annual Muslim Democrat of the Year Award to Shaheed. The citation for the award read that it was being given to Shaheed in recognition of his "role in building democracy and preserving it in the face of hardship, for promoting tolerance and harmony, and for opening a window into a century of reason, freedom, human rights and democracy in the Maldives and in South Asia."

For example, in one case, there is a claim in the websites of opposition groups that an Iranian student, studying engineering in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, has received 80 lashes because of drinking beer; if the picture published in these websites about the person being punished is uploaded and searched in the internet, the results would be surprising. Some anti-Muslim Western websites are the source of its publication on the internet. For example, in one of the Google search engine results, the picture has been referred to as that of a Pakistani rapist who is scourged by the police. However, in the past three decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran as an independent state has been sanctioned under various excuses including its peaceful nuclear activities and human rights situation. Now, it is necessary for Iranian non-governmental human rights groups by disclosing the realities behind opposition claims, discredit the special UN rapporteur’s falsified report on Iran before its publication on March, 2012.

The rapporteur is to prepare a full report on the human rights situation in Iran by March 2012. At that point the Human Rights Council will decide whether to extend his mandate for another eight months. On June 17, the UN Council on Human Rights appointed former Maldivian Foreign Minister Ahmed Shaheed to the position of UN special rapporteur on human rights to Iran.As soon as Shaheed began the eight-month appointment on August 1, he appealed to the Iranian government to extend its full cooperation with his mandate as required by the UN Human Rights Council. The Human Rights Council founded in 2006 as part of the United Nations replaces the Commission on Human Rights. The council members are UN members, elected by the General Assembly.
