The World Federation of Trade Unions in the region of America expressed on Monday its support to the creation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which is seen as strategic. From its headquarters in La Havana, Cuba, the union federation said that the new bloc will have a great significance for the fate of the region without depending on the mediation of foreign hegemonic interests, Prensa Latina reported.

The CELAC will be formally constituted next December in Caracas, Venezuela, comprising 33 countries in the region. The World Federation of Trade Unions expressed that it was in favor of participation mechanisms allowing the strengthening of trade union in member countries.

Thus, “the union movement will not be just an observer in its will of moving toward a more fair society and, in addition, it can hold its right place in the social transformations needed for that other possible world desired by the people,” the statement reads. Also, the WFTU stated that the CELAC should move toward a monetary, trade and regional financial system different from that promoted from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
