France Refuses UK, Dutch Calls for Listing Hizbullah as "Terrorist"
|
France refused Friday the British and Dutch governments calls for the European Union countries to place Hizbullah on Europe's "terror" watch list.On the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus to discuss the EU's response to the Syrian crisis, French Foreign Minister Lauren Fabuis described Holland's and UK calls as illegal."Legally, you can list an organization as terrorist when there is an open judicial procedure against its personal character," he clarified and noted that "until now the Europeans have said that to designate a group as a terrorist organization you have to have a judicial process under way against this organization, which is not the case at the present time."Earlier, London and Hague urged other EU governments to join the United States in imposing sanctions on the group.Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal claimed that "the EU should brand Hizbullah a terrorist organization, a move that would enable the bloc to freeze the group's assets in Europe".So far, however, other EU member states have resisted Washington and "Israel's" pressure to list Hizbullah as "terrorist".
