Turkish people 'overwhelmingly oppose intervention in Syria'

Members of the Communist Party of Turkey carry out a militant direct action in opposition to the deployment of NATO missiles to their country, standing their ground before violent police repression, Jan. 21.

The letter below was received from the Communist Party of Turkey, which Liberation News is publishing to help build awareness of the organizing efforts in Turkey and Europe against NATO and imperialism.Greetings from the Communist Party of Turkey,NATO is once again in the Middle East for waging a new war against Syria. The recent deployment of Patriot missiles to Turkish-Syrian border is a real threat against peace and people’s will in the region.As NATO is deploying its missiles and soldiers on the Turkish-Syrian border, there have been massive anti-NATO actions, all over Turkey, attended by thousands.In total contrast to the hostile and warmongering policies of the ruling AKP government against Syria, the people of Turkey overwhelmingly oppose intervention in Syria.It has become an urgent task of all the communist and progressive forces in the Middle East as well as in NATO member countries to raise the struggle against NATO. We have to expose the real agenda behind sending NATO missiles and troops to the region. We have to break the silence around the recent NATO operations that have already caused the lives of thousands of innocent people and opened the gates to the imperialist exploitation of numerous countries.With this in mind and given the urgency of the situation, TKP has called for an anti-NATO meeting to be held in Istanbul on February 2 and 3. The meeting will be attended by a number of the communist and progressive parties in NATO-member and partner countries.
