The First Summit of Responsible Journalism (CUPRE), held for two days in this city, represented an important reply against the media monopolies. The lectures and speeches, particularly those from journalists, young students and professors of communication, the master lecture of Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa and the surprising closing speech of Julian Assange from London, went beyond all expectations. The event, which was carried out at the Historical Park of Guayaquil under the slogan "Journalism and Social Responsibility", gathered several statements to design a strategy for citizens to face media manipulation. The subject, which was firstly brought by president Correa in his speech, reinforced by Venezuelan minister for Information Ernesto Villegas and widely discussed by Mexican writer and philosopher Fernando Buen Abad, aims at regional further discussions at high levels.Ecuador will propose the granting of a Latin American Award to the Best Responsible Journalism to acknowledge journalists, said the secretary of Communication, Fernando Alvarado in event's closing. An efficient journalism is crucial to consolidate democracy, but an incompetent media that represents factual powers is fatal for democracy, said Correa who also highlighted that not only men think the way they live but also according to the information they receive.
