submitted H.Res.297 on Thursday congratulating Qatar’s new emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and “recognizing the special relationship between the United States and Qatar.” The resolution was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. The resolution recognizes the 1991 Defense Cooperation Agreement and the joint military coordination between the U.S. and Qatar during the Gulf War.  [ed notes;also see...QATAR – AL JAZERRA COVERUP! http://markbruzonsky.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/qatar-al-jazerra-coverup/
The resolution also recognizes Qatar as “a staunch partner’ in the United States’ promotion of “peace and (DE)stability in the Arab world” and as a “ driving force in (FUNDING)opposing extremism and authoritarian oppression,” as well as its contributions to the United States following Hurricane Katrina and its support in Libya and Syria. The young emir’s “resonance with the young people in the Middle East,” write Grimm and Meeks, “uniquely qualify him to build upon the call among the youth of the Arab world to implement the ‘‘Arab Spring’s’’ promises of liberty and political reform.”Earlier this week President Barack Obama spoke to Sheikh Tamim regarding the situation in Egypt. A White House statement said that “The President and Shaikh Tamim agreed that a political process that includes participation by all parties and groups is critical for Egypt’s stability.”
Meanwhile, Kristin Smith Diwan writes that although Qatar’s recognition of the new government in Egypt may be an indication of a new direction in Qatari foreign policy, “Emir Tamim does not appear poised to turn Qatar’s support for democratic liberation inward.” She adds that before abdicating to his son, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani extended “the authority of Qatar’s appointed Shura Council into 2016, negating his own promise of parliamentary elections in 2013.”
