BOLIVIA SLAMS BRAZIL FOR SMUGGLING POLITICIAN OUT OF COUNTRY http://www.namnewsnetwork.org/v3/read.php?id=MjQyMjU0
Bolivia accused Brazil of "violating national and international norms" after a Brazilian diplomat was involved in the smuggling of a Bolivian opposition senator out of the country. Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca told a news conference that Senator Roger Pinto was a fugitive and that President Evo Morales has sent a message to Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, protesting the action and asking for an explanation. "It can set a bad precedent, not just for Bolivia, but for the international community, if those of us protected by diplomatic immunity are going to permit such illegal actions," said Choquehuanca, adding "We want Brazil to formally explain it, since national and international norms have been violated." Choquehuanca said Brazil acted against the 1954 Caracas Convention on asylum by offering refuge to Pinto, despite the fact that he had been charged with a crime and the embassy had been specifically informed. Pinto, who was holed up for 15 months at the Brazilian embassy after being granted asylum in June 2012, made the escape in an embassy car Friday with the help of Brazil's charge d'affaires Eduardo Saboia, driving for more than 20 hours to Brazil's southwest city of Corumba, some 1,600 kilometers from La Paz. Saboia said on Brazilian television that he felt compelled to help the senator because he seemed to be suffering from depression and had expressed suicidal tendencies. "I chose life. I chose to protect someone, a persecuted politician, just as President Dilma (Rousseff) was persecuted," Saboia told (ZIONIST OWNED)Globo TV. Before seeking asylum in the Brazilian embassy, Pinto, who was involved in what La Paz called a smear campaign against Morales, was sentenced to a year in prison for corruption. His assisted flight is expected to fan up tensions between the two countries and has led to the resignation of Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonia Patriota. Patriota stepped down Monday amid escalating tensions with La Paz after the Bolivian senator fled homeland with the help of a Brazilian diplomat.Patriota resigned after meeting with President Dilma Rousseff and was replaced by Luiz Alberto Figueiredo, head of the Brazilian mission to the United Nations, according to a statement from the president's office. -- NNN-AGENCIES
