EGYPT WATCH... David Kenner explains that the best way to disperse sit-ins in the absence of better, less-lethal crowd control technologies, is to bring about the organic collapse of the sit-in. “The infrastructure for the sit-ins cannot support a crowd the size you’re talking about. And as a result of that, they tend to self-implode,” says Sid Heal, a retired commander for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. “People are comfort-seeking creatures — thirst and hunger are other natural dispersal agents that could work in their favor,” he added.Meanwhile, Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) write that “it is essential for the civilian government and armed forces to recognize that, no matter how much they may dislike Morsi’s supporters, they are Egyptians, too, and it is neither realistic nor right to try to exclude them from the life of their nation. This means dealing with them magnanimously, not vindictively… And it means releasing political prisoners, including Morsi supporters.” [[[[They add that Morsi supporters must accept that the former president will not be reinstated]]]] [[[[and should “move out of the streets and into the political process, because there is no good or effective alternative to advance their interests.”]]]]]
