The Brothers Deeb: A Family’s Terrorism Saga
The story of the Hajj Deeb family is like no other. A poor home with 10 male children who became infamous in the world of terrorism. The killing of the most famous son sparked the Nahr al-Bared battles. Now, the next generation is carrying on the family legacy in Syria.According to Abu Abdel-Nasser, the “young men” from Fatah al-Islam, that Saddam joined, were "some of the purest young men under the Lebanese skies. But they were slaughtered like innocent sheep. They never hurt anyone. It is the security forces that pulled them into their filthy game." "Future Movement brought Fatah al-Islam to fight the Shia," the father explains. "But they refused to turn their weapons against anyone except the Americans and the Israelis. So they were liquidated." But how does he explain one son fighting the army in which his older brother serves? "My son was not killed in a war against the army, but against America, which was moving the pawns here," he replies. He says he buried his son Saddam with his own hands. His body "was charred after he was burned with 18 others on Meatein Street. Some of them had nothing to do with the situation." At numbers nine and 10 are Hamza and Yusuf, respectively. The first studied history and geography, but cannot find work. Yusuf, the youngest in the family, is imprisoned for life in Germany. The father describes how he had to borrow money for his son to travel to Germany to study engineering. But one of his relatives, Khair al-Din al-Hajj Deeb led him astray. His brother Ahmad went there to look for him. However, he ended up suggesting to Yusuf that he should carry out an operation to scare the Germans for supporting Israel, according to the father. The father explains that Yusuf refused the idea, but Ahmad insisted. So they booby-trapped a gas canister and put it on a train. "Ahmad was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Lebanon and Yusuf is in jail for life in Germany after they were both caught by security cameras," the father concludes. Abdel-Nasser's never-ending story with terrorism continues. Recently, his brother Malek's son was killed along with his own grandson Abdel-Hakim Ibrahim in the Tal Kalakh ambush. "They were nurses and got upset with what was happening in Syria, so they decided to join the jihad there," the old man explains. "But a Syrian regime collaborator informed about the group." And what about the student officer who was detained in the War College for communicating with an armed group? He’s a relative. The boy has the Quran memorized and he would never hurt anyone, the father explains.
