ALBA's humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees arrived in Lebanon
An airplane of the Bolivarian Alliance for the People of Our America (ALBA) carrying over 6.5 tons of food, medicines, water and blankets for Syrian refugees arrived Monday in Beirut, Lebanon, reported Telesur television network. The Political Council of the regional bloc decided to send humanitarian aid to Syrian citizens refuged in Beirut after a meeting held last Saturday in Caracas. About two million Syrian citizens have moved to Lebanese territory due to the situation in their country, which has been threatened of bombing by the United States and its allies. The aircraft of the Venezuelan air force arrived in Lebanon at 13:14 hours (GMT), coming from Greece as its last stopover before reaching its destination. Telesur special correspondent Madelein Garcia informed in her Twitter profile @madeleintlSUR: "We just reached the airport in Beirut, Lebanon. Mission accomplished." In other messages posted in the social network, she reported: "The crew was welcomed excitedly and with applauses by ALBA countries ambassadors and representatives #ALBAforSyria." Also, she wrote: "In this moment the humanitarian cargo is being unloaded and it was enthusiastically applauded by Lebanese people." While the airplane was being loaded in Venezuela last Wednesday, foreign minister Elias Jaua said that it was a gesture of peace and solidarity on behalf of sister nations that appeal to those who have the power to prevent a war. ALBA is made by Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia. The first special airplane on Monday reached Beirut Airport to provide food and medical aid for displaced Syrians in Lebanon, under the supervision of the ambassadors of the member states of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA). The plane carries food and medical equipments. The Venezuelan Ambassador to Lebanon, Souad Karam, received the plane at the airport.
