Ramadan exemplifies the powerful spiritual calling of Islam. Dry fasting is more a test of the spirit, the will, proof of devotion, than just some health gimmick. And it is precisely this cultivation of mass “mind over matter” that frustrates Western secularists, so used to indulging every consumer fetish on a whim. Why are Muslims so stubborn in nurturing ancient beliefs and rituals when they fly in the face of modern capitalist society? Secular critics dismiss Islam as a harmful, even dangerous anachronism. Why disrupt one’s busy day five times to pray, slow down the whole economic order for an entire month every year, ban alcohol and interest — the bedrock of Western society?

Yet the now rich and self-satisfied secular West, after centuries of conquest and imposition of its colonial and now neocolonial order, has found itself at a nightmarish deadend. Wars, riots, drug addiction, corruption, famine, ecological Armageddon … There is little to cheer for and no coherent explanation for the impasse and the way forward. So the demand that the Muslim world follow in Western footsteps rings hollow.

For non-believers, there are social laws that can help to understand Islam’s continued relevance. One is Mayer Rothschild’s dictum: “Give me control of a nation’s money and I care not who makes its laws.” The other is Carl Clausewitz’s “War is the continuation of politics by other means.” Together, they point to the underlying economic and political problems which have led to the current crisis. In a nutshell, the dominance of banks (as opposed to governments representing the popular will) in controlling economic affairs has created a world where politics serves their particular needs (interest and profit), and the politics which promotes the interests of banks is — just look around — war and speculation (read: pillage and theft).

One of the world's largest insurances companies has blacklisted a trio of American cluster bomb manufacturers that have benefited from investment by British banks despite a growing global ban on the deadly weapons.British insurer Aviva has created a "stop list" of 12 arms manufactures which include the US defence giants Lockheed Martin, Textron and Alliant Techsystems. All three companies have received hundreds of millions of pounds in investment from British high street banks.

Although cluster bombs have been banned by Britain, Barclays, HSBC and the state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland have been able to exploit a loophole which allows them to continue investing in cluster munitions manufacturers as long as they don't invest directly in the bombs themselves.Arms campaigners want to see the loophole closed but the Coalition Government has so far balked at bringing in any legislation, insisting that the banks are perfectly capable at regulating themselves.Barclays and HSBC have privately indicated their intention to withdraw from any future deals with Textron, a Rhode Island based arms conglomerate which makes the world's largest cluster bomb.State-owned RBS,

which has invested hundreds of millions in Alliant and Lockheed, does not accept that either company is a cluster bomb manufacturer, because it disputes the definition used by campaigners.But Aviva, the world's sixth largest insurance company, has placed Textron, Alliant and Lockheed on their arms black list. In December last year Aviva executives wrote to a host of defence companies around the world seeking assurances that they were not involved in the production of cluster munitions or key components. Those who failed the test or refused to respond were blacklisted, meaning Aviva will not invest any of its own money in those companies.

Venezuela now has the equipment and training to provide services for children who require heart surgery, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said.In an interview with Venezuelan TV, Sader said the procedures are guaranteed at the Gilberto Rodriguez Ochoa Latin American Children's Cardiology Hospital, considered a center of world reference.Sader also stressed the quality of the service as one of the distinctive features of the hospital, which is celebrating five years of work this week, with more than 5,500 operations provided to Venezuelan and foreign children.

Since the hospital's opening, its specialists have had the support of many cardiology centers around the world and the opportunity to share with professionals and researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia and Spain.
