Native Alaskan groups stand up to Shell's destructive oil drillinghttp://current.com/http://www.earthjustice.org/news/press/2010/shell-oil-chukchi-sea-drilling-plans-challenged.html

Conservation and Alaska Native groups called for a timeout on oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea yesterday, filing a legal challenge against Shell Oil's permit to drill in the region next summer. The U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) approved drilling in the Chukchi Sea after doing only an abbreviated and internal review of its potential harms and despite significant concerns surrounding Shell's oil leases.

Last spring, a federal appeals court told the Interior Department that it needed to take a more complete look at how oil and gas development would harm the area's environment -– an assignment the Interior Department has not finished despite moving forward with approving Shell's drilling. Additionally, the lease sale for the leases on which Shell would drill is also the subject of unresolved litigation in the Alaska Federal District Court.

Oil in Haitihttp://www.margueritelaurent.com/pressclips/oil_sites.html#petroleFrench

There is documented evidence dated as far back as 2004 that Haiti may indeed have oil reserves under it and that the U.S. and others have an interest in exploring for oil there.

"There is evidence that the United States found oil in Haiti decades ago and due to the geopolitical circumstances and big business interests of that era made the decision to keep Haitian oil in reserve for when Middle Eastern oil had dried up. This is detailed by Dr. Georges Michel in an article dated March 27, 2004 outlining the history of oil explorations and oil reserves in Haiti and in the research of Dr. Ginette and Daniel Mathurin. Indonesia: new ambush targets Freeport personnel in militarized West Papuahttp://thejakartaglobe.com/home/ambush-in-papua-sparks-manhunt/354607

Claims by Indonesia authorities that the killing of West Papuan rebel leader Kelly Kwalik last month would improve security in the province's restive Timika region were dashed Jan. 24 when nine people traveling in a convoy of US mining company Freeport-McMoran were injured in an ambush. Papua police said gunmen fired at two buses and four other vehicles carrying Freeport employees and family members on the highway between the mine and Kuala Kencana town. The injured included one US and one South African national working at the Grasberg gold and copper mine, the teenage daughter of a mine employee, and four Mobile Brigade police officers.

The appointment of Maj. Gen. Hotma Marbun to the Military Command for the Kodam-XVII Cenderawasih region comes as Papuans continue to seek a dialogue with the Jakarta government and the demilitarization of their homeland, in spite of recent escalations in violence. Their appeals have been resisted by a military that persists in describing Papuan protest leaders as "separatists." Maj. Gen. Marbun was involved in operations in Indonesia-occupied East Timor in 1983 and 1986, a particularly bloody period during the occupation. He also participated in military operations in West Papua in 1982 and 1994.

The ambush follows the controversial naming of a senior Indonesian Special Forces (Kopassus) officer as regional military commander in West Papua. Kopassus forces have long been implicated in grave rights abuses in campaigns against local populations struggling for autonomy or independencehttp://www.etan.org/news/2008/04brikop.htmFor decades, the US military provided training and other assistance to Kopassus despite widely acknowledged abuses and criminal activity. The Obama administration is reportedly considering resuminghttp://www.etan.org/news/2009/07kopassus.htmsuch assistance, terminated under Congressional pressure more than a decade ago.http://www.etan.org/news/2010/01hotma.htm

Paramilitaries displace population near Venezuela borderhttp://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/news/7821-paramilitaries-displace-population-near-venezuela-border.html

Paramilitary groups that are terrorizing people living along the Venezuelan border is causing an alarming cross-border displacement in the region, Colombia's Ombudsman said.Ombudsman Volmar Perez Ortiz, quoted on Friday by newspaper El Tiempo and again on Sunday by radio station Caracol, paramilitary groups Aguilas Negras and Los Rastrojos have been carrying out selective killings, massacres and attacks on the civilian population in the Norte de Santander department and to lesser extent in other border departments. The aggression has led to the displacement of communities that live near the border in neighboring Venezuela. Without being able to say how many people have been displaced to the neighboring country, Perez warned the new displacement is particularly dangerous because of minefields in the area and the vulnerability of the displaced population to forced recruitment and forced prostitution. The departments bordering Venezuela have been considered dangerous for years as the border is crossed by both left-wing guerrillas and right-wing militias involved in drug trafficking.

German court issues arrest warrant for Argentine "Dirty War" junta leaderhttp://www.ww4report.com/node/8246

A German court in Nuremberg has issued an arrest warrant for Argentina's former dictator Jorge Videla for helping to cover up the death of a German citizen in 1978, at the height of the "Dirty War." The Bayern prosecutor reopened the case in December and requested an order of arrest for Videla after the remains of Rolf Stawowiok were identified through genetic testing in early 2009. The local Nuremberg court had closed the case in 2008 citing a lack of physical evidence as well as an Argentine court ruling declining to extradite Videla for the deaths of another two German citizens.

Stawowiok's remains were exhumed in 2004 and were found to have evidence of torture and bullets. Argentine authorities have said that Videla will remain in prison until he has served his prior sentence. Videla has been in prison since 2008 while an investigation is underway for his role in the abduction of children born to political prisoners and forced disappearance victims during Argentina's Dirty War. He is also under investigation for the deaths of 31 political prisoners.

President of Argentinahttp://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/US_ThirdWorld/dictators.htmlSoon after the coup that brought him to power in 1976 General Jorge Rafael Videla began Argentina's dirty war. All political and union activities were suspended, wages were reduced by 60%, and dissidents were tortured by Nazi and US-trained military and police. Survivors say the torture rooms contained swastikas and pictures of Hitler, Mussolini and Franco. One year after Videla's coup, Amnesty International estimated 15,000 people had disappeared and many were in secret detention camps, but although the U.S. press admitted human rights abuses occurred in Argentina, Videla was often described as a "moderate' who revitalized his nation's troubled economy. Videla had a good public relations firm in the U.S., Deaver and Hannaford, the same firm used by Ronald Reagan, Taiwan, and Guatemala. Videla also received aid from the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), through its affiliate, CAL (Confederation AntiCommunists Latinoamericana). CAL sent millions of dollars to Argentina from the US, including old anti-communist organizations with alliances with the Italian drug mafia. As part of its WACL affiliation, Argentina trained Nicaraguan contras for the US. Videla left office in 1981, and after the Falklands Crisis of 1982, he and his cohorts were tried for human rights abuses by the new government.

FIDEL: “WE SEND DOCTORS, NOT SOLDIERS”http://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/fidel-we-send-doctors-not-soldiers/

Havana, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) Prensa Latina transmits as follows the article titled: “We send doctors, not soldiers”, by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, Publisher by digital website Cubadebate. WE SEND DOCTORS, NOT SOLDIERS.n my Reflection of January 14, two days after the catastrophe in Haiti, which destroyed that neighboring sister nation, I wrote: “In the area of healthcare and others the Haitian people has received the cooperation of Cuba, even though this is a small and blockaded country. Approximately 400 doctors and healthcare workers are helping the Haitian people free of charge.

Our doctors are working every day at 227 of the 237 communes of that country. On the other hand, no less than 400 young Haitians have been graduated as medical doctors in our country. They will now work alongside the reinforcement that traveled there yesterday to save lives in that critical situation. Thus, up to one thousand doctors and healthcare personnel can be mobilized without any special effort; and most are already there willing to cooperate with any other State that wishes to save Haitian lives and rehabilitate the injured.”

Securing Disaster in Haiti by Peter Hallward (author of Damning the Flood: Haiti, Aristide and the Politics of Containment)http://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/securing-disaster-in-haiti-by-peter-hallward-author-of-damning-the-flood-haiti-aristide-and-the-politics-of-containment/

Nine days after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, it’s now clear that the initial phase of the US-led relief operation has conformed to the three fundamental tendencies that have shaped the more general course of the island’s recent history.[1] It has adopted military priorities and strategies. It has sidelined Haiti’s own leaders and government, and ignored the needs of the majority of its people.

And it has proceeded in ways that reinforce the already harrowing gap between rich and poor. All three tendencies aren’t just connected, they are mutually reinforcing. These same tendencies will continue to govern the imminent reconstruction effort as well, unless determined political action is taken to counteract them.

Homeland Security Harasses Haiti Activistshttp://www.fightbacknews.org/2010/1/21/homeland-security-harasses-haiti-activists

The U.S. government is stepping up its surveillance and harassment of U.S. activists in an attempt to intimidate them and dampen their spirits for the change we believe in. International solidarity activist James Jordan was returning from a two week trip to Haiti, on Jan. 7, five days prior to the terrible earthquake disaster.

There is a massive movement against the wealthy elite, including narco-traffickers, that rule Colombia. The U.S. government funds the notoriously corrupt Colombian military, giving it nearly $7 billion in the last ten years. The White House announced it is occupying seven military bases inside Colombia. This will expand the U.S. war in Colombia and threaten neighboring countries like Venezuela and Ecuador. Pentagon generals and the U.S. Southern Command direct the war that brings poverty, misery and death squads to the lives of Colombian peasants and workers. The U.S. Congress funds and covers for the most reactionary, corrupt and unsavory elements of the Colombian elite.

VIDEO-THE FUTURE OF WARhttp://fromthewilderness.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/the-future-of-war/ video

The military industrial complex knows that their plan for endless war is controversial. They are moving to reduce the financial cost of their (per unit) technologies and trying to fight more wars with fewer soldiers. Thus their emphasis on robotic warfare. What are the moral and ethical questions that arise? We need to start talking about them.

Avatar is real: Pandora is in Central and South Americahttp://www.greenleft.org.au/2010/823/42355

Avatar is real: the fictional planet of Pandora exists in South and Central America, and the Na'vi peoples are being displaced and killed right now. The names are different, but the facts are almost the same.

In the next generation, Central and South America will be the battlefields for rich countries to fight over natural resources, which they need to continue growing and keeping up to their consumerist, excessive ways of life.  The last pristine, virgin forests on Earth will be taken over by rich and powerful military armies, working on behalf of the interests of multinational corporations.

The Obama administration and the biased US media have decided to attack the governments of Bolivia and Venezuela, while remaining silent in the massacres of indigenous peoples in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, the violent repression in Chile and Ecuador, and the violent coup regime of Honduras — where death squads trained in the US have attacked indigenous groups.

We continue exporting jobs to foreign countries while importing cheap labor and increasing unemployment for American workers here in the USA."

Ken Taylor, the Canadian diplomat celebrated 30 years ago for hiding U.S. embassy personnel during the Iranian revolution, actively spied for the Americans and helped them plan an armed incursion into the country. Mr. Taylor, ambassador in Iran from 1977 to 1980, became “the de facto CIA station chief” in Tehran after the U.S. embassy was seized by students on Nov. 4, 1979, and 63 Americans, including the four-member Central Intelligence Agency contingent, were taken hostage.

Turkey: Newly exposed military coup planned to turn the clock back to 1923http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/news-199301-newly-exposed-coup-planned-to-turn-the-clock-back-to-1923.html

According to the coup plan -- titled the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) Security Operation Plan -- all the key posts in the country, public and private, would be occupied by active and retired members of the military to “get rid of every single threat to the secular order of the state.Taraf claimed on Wednesday that the coup plan -- a nearly 5,000-page document -- was agreed at a military meeting attended by 162 active TSK members, including 29 generals. According to the plan, the military was to systematically foment chaos in society through violent acts that would lead to a military takeover.

A return to 1923 would mean almost paralyzing daily life in Turkey, according the plan. The document suggested that the armed forces would take full control of state institutions, private hospitals, drugs warehouses, customs houses and shopping centers after the military takeover. The headquarters of some newspapers would also be raided by the security forces.“No rights or freedoms are absolute or limitless. When the case is the survival of the secular state, the right to inform the public and freedom of the press is not without limit, either. All written and visual press organs will be taken under control, and the publications of press organs that side with the AK Party will immediately be halted,” read the document.

The armed forces also planned to take into custody and then arrest at least 200,000 individuals accused of reactionary activities in İstanbul after the coup. The total number of detainees around Turkey was estimated to reach 16 million, the plan stated. According to the document, individuals who stood against the coup would be taken into custody and brought to large sports facilities for interrogation. Among those facilities were the Burhan Felek sports complex and Fenerbahçe Stadium. The suspects would be questioned by security forces there and then would be sent to prisons. If the prisons were unable to accommodate all the arrestees, then military barracks would temporarily be turned into jails.

Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei urged the United States to reconsider the Taiwan arms package in the sixth official Chinese warning in a week earlier this month, telling his nation's Xinhua News Agency that "China had strongly protested the U.S. government's recent decision to allow Raytheon Company and Lockheed Martin Corp. to sell weapons to Taiwan" and "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan undermine China's national security."...

Later information added to the inventory and to China's ire when it was revealed that "the Obama Administration would soon announce the sale to Taiwan of a package worth billions of U.S. dollars including Black Hawk helicopters, anti-missile systems and plans for diesel-powered submarines in a move likely to anger China."

Vital evidence which could solve the mystery of the death of Government weapons inspector Dr David Kelly will be kept under wraps for up to 70 years. In a draconian – and highly unusual – order, Lord Hutton, the peer who chaired the controversial inquiry into the Dr Kelly scandal, has secretly barred the release of all medical records, including the results of the post mortem, and unpublished evidence.

Tonight, Dr Michael Powers QC, a doctor campaigning to overturn the Hutton findings, said: ‘What is it about David Kelly’s death which is so secret as to justify these reports being kept out of the public domain for 70 years?’ Campaigning Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker, who has also questioned the verdict that Dr Kelly committed suicide, said: ‘It is astonishing this is the first we’ve known about this decision by Lord Hutton and even more astonishing he should have seen fit to hide this material away.’

Media Critiques Beware of the BBC  http://axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/Article_58238.shtml

Its mission statement says: 'Trust is the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest.'However, people are complaining bitterly to the BBC about its pro-Israel stance when reporting on the situation in the Holy Land.Once renowned as the benchmark for fairness and accuracy, the BBC nowadays is careless with the truth when handling news from the Palestinian territories illegally occupied by Israel - the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.

We were treated to a prize example earlier this week. The flagship 'Today' programme, which goes out weekdays from 6am to 9am on Radio4, marked the anniversary of Israel's blitzkrieg with a feature on the Gaza economy, in which I heard presenters claim at least three times that the purpose of Operation Cast Lead was to stop the rocket attacks across the border. This is untrue. The rockets stopped months before Israel’s assault with the start of the ceasefire, brokered by Egypt, which held from 19 June until 4 November 2008, when Israel deliberately dashed hopes for peace by staging an armed incursion into Gaza killing several Hamas men.

A Decade of Propaganda? The BBC's Reporting of Venezuelahttp://www.trinidadandtobagonews.com/blog/?p=2085Researchers at the University of the West of England, UK, have exposed ongoing and systematic bias in the BBC’s news reporting on Venezuela. Dr Lee Salter and Dr Dave Weltman analysed ten years of BBC reports on Venezuela since the first election of Hugo Chavez to the presidency in an ongoing research project, and their findings so far show that the BBC’s reporting falls short of its legal commitment to impartiality, truth and accuracy.

San Francisco - A federal judge has dismissed Jewel v. "We're deeply disappointed in the judge's ruling," said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn. "This ruling robs innocent telecom customers of their privacy rights without due process of law. Setting limits on Executive power is one of the most important elements of America's system of government, and judicial oversight is a critical part of that."
