Now one Canadian lawmaker has taken on the Herculean challenge of legislating mining reform in a country that has traditionally acted like a parent in denial. "The mining industry in Canada is too powerful a lobby," said Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) John McKay.

Protests multiply in Afghanistanhttp://stopwarblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/protests-multiply-in-afghanistan.html

We saw that hundreds of people in Ghazni hit the streets in protest on Thursday (Jan 20) after an overnight raid killed several people, alleged by the protesters to be innocent civilians. The protests continued on Friday, when Pajhwok Afghan News reported that "hundreds" of protesters forces the closure of streets and businesses. Shopkeeper Hamidullah told the reporter:

"The victims had links neither with Taliban fighters nor with other anti-government group. Abdullah, a security guard of a mobile tower, was killed along with two sons in the air raid." Driver Fazal Karim was the fourth civilian victim, he said. (link) [N.B.: The shopkeeper is translated as referring to an air raid, when it was a ground forces raid.]

THE DRONE SURGE Today, Tomorrow, and 2047http://fromthewilderness.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/the-drone-surge/

When it comes to the drone surge, the years 2011-2013 are just the near horizon. While, like the Army, the Navy is working on its own future drone warfare capacity — in the air as well as on and even under the water — the Air Force is involved in striking levels of futuristic planning for robotic war. It envisions a future previously imagined only in sci-fi movies like the Terminator series. As a start, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA, the Pentagon’s blue skies research outfit, is already looking into radically improving on Gorgon Stare with an “Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance-Infrared (ARGUS-IR) System.”

In addition to enhanced sensors and systems like ARGUS-IR, the Air Force has a long-term vision for drone warfare that is barely beginning to be realized. In the coming years, the RQ-170 is slated to be joined in the skies of America’s “next wars” by a fleet of drones with ever newer, more sophisticated capabilities and destructive powers. This means bigger, badder, faster drones — armed to the teeth — with sensor systems to monitor wide swathes of territory and the ability to loiter overhead for days on end waiting for human targets to appear and, in due course, be vaporized by high-powered munitions.

It’s a future built upon advanced technologies designed to make targeted killings — remote-controlled assassinations — ever more effortless. Over the horizon and deep into what was, until recently, only a silver-screen fantasy, the Air Force envisions a wide array of unmanned aircraft, from tiny insect-like robots to enormous “tanker size” pilotless planes. For the Air Force, such a prospect is the stuff of dreams, a bright future for unmanned, hypersonic lethality; for the rest of the planet, it’s a potential nightmare from which there may be no waking.

Chavez Supporters and Opposition Rally in Venezuela on Anniversary of Overthrow of Dictatorhttp://www.venezuelanalysis.com/news/5099

“We have to win the great majority in the national assembly…and continue deepening the socialist project,” he said. Chavez’s anti-neoliberal policies, his utilisation of Venezuela’s vast oil resources to promote pro-poor policies such as free education and healthcare and his avowed aim of building “socialism of the 21st Century” in Venezuela have earned him the ire of both Venezuelan and US elites.

“US imperialism is in full counterattack. Electoral victories of the rightwing [i.e. in Chile] have the continental rightwing excited. They want to eliminate the left governments to impose lackeys of Yankee imperialism,” he told the crowd.

Iran has a very clear choice between continued isolation and living up to its international obligations," Ms Clinton said."Six years of dialogue by my predecessor Javier Solana has not brought us to the outcome that we would wish. And so we do have to consider what else needs to be done, and we stand ready to do that," Ms Ashton added.

Ariel, the fourth-largest settlement in the West Bank, is considered by most Israelis as one of the “settlement blocs” that will be annexed to Israel in a peace deal. Palestinians say such an annexation would effectively cut the West Bank in two...There are widespread fears among Israeli academics that calls for a boycott of Israeli universities will intensify following the Ariel College decision. Yaron Ezrahi, a professor at Hebrew University, called the decision the “academisation of the occupation”.

State guards caught kidnapping farmerhttp://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/news/7828-state-guards-caught-kidnapping-farmer.html

Military occupation in the disguise of humanitarian aidhttp://www.abn.info.ve/go_news5.php?articulo=217152&lee=17

According to the Deputy, “It is clear the role that the United States wants to play in Haiti: the country's military occupation. The alleged plan of humanitarian aid is nothing but a strategic positioning of Washington in Latin America's Caribbean.”“To carry out such occupation it is necessary to count with enough resources. Such is the reason of the 100 million dollars of alleged humanitarian aid. But, as we know, great part of it will not go to Haiti but for the navy and the infantry,” denounced Wimmer.

“The United States took completely possession of the national airport and decides who is allowed to enter and leave the country. It already sabotaged the landing of a French aircraft that transported a field hospital, and given the fact that France occupied the island centuries ago, this is a real conflict of imperialist powers,” Wimmer explained.“For the US, Haiti represents a risk-free place for its military operations oriented to Cuba, Venezuela and Central America. With such occupation, it can have at its disposal the rights of the territory in the coast, turning the island into a harbor and an aircraft carrier in the Caribbean,” affirmed Deputy Wimmer.

Similarly, he recalled that the US lost control over Asia before Europe and also over Africa in such a way that the US African Command is placed in Germany, since no African nation gave permission for that military command. “Then, Barack Obama's Administration, different to George W. Bush, will go about Latin America and the Caribbean. In the face of failures and debilitation around the world, Obama focus on what he considers his backyard,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, the Deputy compared the US operations in Honduras to Haiti's. “It is the same operations, but carried out by different means: in Honduras, they brought about a coup and attacked Hondurans, while in Haiti they are taking advantage of the catastrophe, the Government, and a noble people.”

Some 8,000 illegal immigrants work in Calabria, most as day laborers picking fruit and vegetables, and critics say authorities turn a blind eye until it stops being politically convenient to do so.Many live in abandoned factories with no running water or electricity and human rights groups say they are exploited by the 'Ndrangheta.

Protesters in central Rome carried oranges covered in fake blood to symbolize the violence toward immigrants and their exploitation in Italy's citrus fruit harvests. Egypt's foreign ministry said the Rosarno incident showed "religious and racial discrimination and hatred of foreigners," and called on the international community to respond.

Barack Obama is a brand. And the Obama brand is designed to make us feel good about our government while corporate overlords loot the Treasury, armies of corporate lobbyists grease the palms of our elected officials, our corporate media diverts us with gossip and trivia, and our imperial wars expand in the Middle East. Brand Obama is about being happy consumers. We are entertained. We feel hopeful. We like our president. We believe he is like us. But like all branded products spun out from the manipulative world of corporate advertising, this product is duping us into doing and supporting a lot of things that are not in our interest.

What, for all our faith and hope, has the Obama brand given us? His administration has spent, lent, or guaranteed $12.8 trillion in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street and insolvent banks in a doomed effort to re-inflate the bubble economy, a tactic that at best forestalls catastrophe and will leave us broke in a time of profound crisis. Brand Obama has allocated nearly $1 trillion in defense-related spending and the continuation of our doomed imperial projects in Iraq, where military planners now estimate that 70,000 troops will remain for the next fifteen to twenty years.

Brand Obama has expanded the war in Afghanistan, increasing the use of drones sent on cross-border bombing runs into Pakistan, which have doubled the number of civilians killed over the past three months. Brand Obama has refused to ease restrictions so workers can organize and will not consider single-payer, not-for-profit health care for all Americans. And Brand Obama will not prosecute the Bush administration for war crimes, including the use of torture, and has refused to dismantle Bush's secrecy laws and restore habeas corpus.

Mainstream news attributes Haitian poverty to the supernatural, avoiding history of foreign intervention

While Some Aid Givers Use Helicopters and Guns, Cubans Set Up Clinics Within Champ de Mar Refugee Camphttp://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/while-some-aid-givers-use-helicopters-and-guns-cubans-set-up-clinics-within-champ-de-mar-refugee-camp/

In counter-point, many of the 500 Cuban doctors working in Haiti have fanned out throughout Port-au-Prince, particularly in the massive refugee camp that now covers the Champ de Mars, the downtown square. There they have set up small clinics, identified by a Cuban flag, to tend to the earthquake's many victims. According to Dr. Evan Lyon of Partners in Health, who is presently administering the HUEH, some 40,000 to 50,000 people living in the square benefit greatly from this aid. The Cuban doctors carry out their work, without having to be guarded by helmeted men with guns. "The Cuban doctors are an intense resource," he said.

CHAVEZ: ALBA Countries to Re-Build Haiti Not Going to Let the Gringo Empire Take Over Haitihttp://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/chavez-alba-countries-to-re-build-haiti-not-going-to-let-the-gringo-empire-take-over-haiti/

During his “Hello, President” television program Sunday, Chavez said unilateral efforts by Venezuela to get food, fuel and other supplies to the Haitians have been stymied by the U.S., and he said he’s getting tired of it.“Venezuela’s humanitarian shipment had to be sent by water then by land through the Dominican Republic because our ships can’t dock at any Haitian port because those that are (in working condition) have been taken by the Yankees,”

the president said.ALBA “is already in Haiti, but now we’re going to make a specific strategic plan for the short- and medium-term,” Chavez said. He said ALBA members would also seek assistance from African nations.

“We’re not going to allow the gringo empire to take over Haiti. We won’t,” said Chavez, who referred to the area surrounding Haiti and the relief efforts as a “battlefield.”Venezuela has so far sent several tons of food and supplies to Haiti. Its state oil company PDVSA provided 225,000 barrels of fuel.

Radio Havana Cuba: Haiti New US Military Base? US is a genetically aggressive and expansionist nation.http://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/radio-havana-cuba-haiti-new-us-military-base-the-us-is-a-genetically-aggressive-and-expansionist-nation/

The U.S. government is making full opportunistic use of the tragedy caused by the earthquake in Haiti. The white house forced the local government to agree to fill their country with U.S. Marines and troops of the 82nd Airborne Division, in an operation which has nothing to do with humanitarian assistance but with military occupation.

HAITI: Can You Say “UN Trusteeship?” Zbigniew Brezhenski Can and Doeshttp://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/haiti-can-you-say-un-trusteeship-zbigniew-brezhenski-can-and-does/#respond

on Fareed Zakaria’s Sunday show, GPS. Click here to see the interview.  Daniel Schorr called for a UN trusteeship on his National Public Radio program. And, here is an article in the Canadian Military Journal written a few years ago, “The Case for International Trusteeship in Haiti.”While a trusteeship for Haiti has been floated many times before, when you hear the whole choir singing in perfect harmony, it’s time to pay attention.

Brezhenski drops several hints throughout the interview which may provide insight into what is in store: this should be an international effort involving Latin America, Central America and France; while the UN should coordinate the general effort, there should be an overall point person for the trusteeship (viceroy?) who should have a military background or connection; and it’s important that the US not be the country out front leading the effort because of its sometimes rocky relationship with Haiti.

Given that Aristide was overthrown by a cabal of the US, France, and Canada, I don’t see the Haitian people settling for a viceroy from any of these countries. But, I bet that Canada will play a significant, yet behind the scenes role implementing US and French policy goals – just as it did in the 2004 coup against Aristide.

Israel's prime minister declared on Sunday that his country would retain parts of the West Bank forever — a statement that infuriated Palestinians and could complicate the year-old peace mission of a visiting U.S. envoy. "Our message is clear: We are planting here, we will stay here, we will build here, this place will be an inseparable part of the state of Israel for eternity," Netanyahu proclaimed at a tree-planting ceremony celebrating the Jewish arbor day at a settlement just south of Jerusalem.

SEC mulled national security status for AIG detailshttp://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE60N1S220100124

U.S. securities regulators originally treated the New York Federal Reserve's bid to keep secret many of the details of the American International Group bailout like a request to protect matters of national security, according to emails obtained by Reuters. The request to keep the details secret were made by the New York Federal Reserve -- a regulator that helped orchestrate the bailout -- and by the giant insurer itself, according to the emails.
