Post-coup Honduran President Porfirio Lobo left for his U.S. trip on Saturday. The president's itinerary will take him to the U.S. states of New Orleans and Miami, where he would visit a number of universities and talk to a World Bank official.Honduras, sinking into political turmoil when former President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a coup late last June, is now seeking and rallying support for its reentry into the international community, particularly the readmission to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Honduran Foreign Minister Mario Canahuati said Honduras' membership in the OAS should be automatically reinstated when the next general assembly convenes in Lima on June 6-8.Lobo, assuming office on Jan. 27, granted Zelaya safe passage out of the country and agreed not to arrest him over charges that he violated the constitution while in power.

But several Latin American states, including Brazil and Argentina, refuse to recognize the post-coup Honduran government, saying the recognition would imply the approval of the coup and the overthrow of a democratically elected president.The United States, however, is urging all countries in the region to recognize Lobo's government.
