IRAN'S WAR ON NARCOTICS: SEVERAL TONNES OF NARCOTICS SET ON FIRE http://www.namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=162819

Over 7 tonnes of different types of illicit drugs discovered and seized from drug-traffickers in various operations were set on fire in Iran's Southeastern province of Kerman, a provincial police chief announced.According to a report by Fars News Agency (FNA), narcotics destroyed on Friday include opium, hash, heroine, crack, Norchizak and Tamchizak ampoules, material for producing Crystal (Methamphetamine) and instruments for consuming narcotics. Deputy Head of Kerman's Anti-Narcotics Headquarters General Ebrahim Shakeri said that the narcotic drugs were confiscated during the first three months of the current (Iranian) year (started on March 21).

The symbolic move came at the beginning of the National Week of Drug Campaign. Every year, Iran destroys several tonnes of narcotics throughout the country to mark the national week of drug campaign. Setting fire to the drug cargos seized from traffickers is a symbolic act carried out more than twice a year in different parts of the country. Iran is close to the world's number one opium producer, Afghanistan, and drug-traffickers view this region as the start of a transit route to drug markets in Europe. During the last Iranian year (ended on March 20,) Iran seized more than 400 tonnes of opium smuggled from Afghanistan
