The deputy governor of Uludere district where 35 civilians were killed in a botched air raid were attacked by a group of people. Deputy Gov. Naif Yavuz was traveling to Gülyazı village to offer condolences to families of the killed when a group of people wielding sticks attacked him and hurled stones at Yavuz, Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported.Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Hasip Kaplan has warned against any visits from state officials to the village of Uludere after Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay announced he would visit the village to offer his condolences.“The people do not want to see them [state officials] right now,” Kaplan said. “If they come here, we would not be able to control the young people.”“Everyone will be armed,” Kaplan said and added any state visit to the village would act as a provocation, Hurriyet said.
Kurds staged angry protests cross Turkey for the past 3 days over the death of the villagers.The Turkish air force blasted a group of Kurdish locals whose survival mostly depends on smuggling cigarettes and fuel from Kurdish side of Iraq. The Turkish military initial reactions denied any population in the area and said they “suspected and attacked guerrillas who were crossing the border. ” Later on when news revealed that the 35 people were actually civilians, the Turkish military called the massacre the military ”mistook” the smugglers to PKK rebels.
