Massey Energy, the coal giant that runs the Upper Big Branch Mine, has a reputation for intimidating its workers into compliance that takes the form of silence, particularly when the subject revolves around safety. The Washington Independent says the reason is clear: Massey is the economic engine in parts of West Virginia, and many workers fear grumbling could leave them unemployed.

Chuck Nelson, a former Massey miner who’s since become an environmental activist with the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, said: “Massey’s already told these guys: ‘You’re not talking to no reporters. You’re not saying nothin’ about our safety record — or you won’t have a job.’” Denny Tyler, an electrician who has contracted with Massey and now runs a website advocating the end of mountaintop mining said: “Massey owns .. a lot of little tiny outfits,” adding: “If you get fired from one, you’re not working anywhere on Coal River.”
