Peruvian police repressed miners on Sunday who launched a protest and blocked the Panamerican highway in the Peruvian region of Arequipa (south), in a move which the government left one dead  according to the three leaders of the demonstration. "There has been a civilian death" during the police operation, said Prime Minister Javier Velásquez, without further details in response to journalists on a version of the leaders of the Federation of Artisanal Miners, convener of the strike, that repression would left three dead.

The victim died of a gunshot wound to the head and was a motorcycle taxi outside the conflict, reported family told RPP radio. Velasquez did not say whether the eviction was violent or peaceful, but the miners' leader Rafael Seminary denounced the deaths of three people in the same action, as stated by phone news channel N. "Three dead in Chala, the police shot at us," said the leader, referring to the release of the route occupied since early Sunday.

"Police have evacuated the area and traffic has been restored that had been blocked for seven thousand miners" which closed to vehicles in the district of Chala, Arequipa, the road that connects the southern Peru to Lima, 620 kilometers, said before meeting Prime Minister such information. Informal miners were demanding that the government of Alan Garcia repeal a recent decree establishing the formalization of their work in order to reduce pollution and accidents.
