A year of hard knocks and injustice, but of ample dignity by Miguel Ángel BELTRÁN http://www.tlaxcala.es/pp.asp?reference=10716&lg=en
To begin with, I have seen the authentic authoritarian facade of regimes such as Mexico and Colombia that exalt the primacy of democratic values in their constitutions and in their official speeches, but that do not hesitate to opt for means as condemnable as the kidnapping, forced disappearance, torture, and human rights violations of their citizens, under the pretext that they are fighting an alleged “terrorist threat.”
And the fact is that I have to tell you –because the media at the service of the establishment has concealed it – that I was not arrested but kidnapped and tortured by Mexican authorities –
in an operation coordinated with the Colombian DIJIN (Criminal Investigation Office) – when, believing in the democratic institutions of these countries, I went on my own accord to the offices of the National Migration Institute to request an extension of my legal stay, so I could conclude the postdoctoral research I was doing at the invitation of the Latin American Study Centre, CELA (Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos), at the Mexican National Autonomous University, UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).
