Egyptian Activist gets Five Years http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/03/20113301027809803.html
Egyptian activist Amr Abdallah Elbihiry was sentenced Wednesday to five years in military prison by Egypt's Supreme Military Court for assaulting a public official and breaking curfew. Elbihiry was arrested Saturday in front of the Council of Ministers’ headquarters at a peaceful demonstration demanding the resignation of interim prime minister Ahmed Shafiq. Elbihiry was participating in a sit-in that was violently dispersed by Egyptian armed forces and military police using electric batons. The armed forces later apologized for the violent crackdown and Shafiq resigned Thursday, but Elbihiry's conviction has sparked outrage among pro-democracy activists who see the harsh sentence as a tell-tale sign much remains the same since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown. Activists fear Elbihiry's conviction is the beginning of a trend of quick military trials from a regime that has been slow to prosecute former members of the old dictatorship.
