Alvaro Uribe has slammed an attempt by Latin American countries to set up an organization without the USA and Canada, which countries belonging to the Rio Group launched at their last summit in February. Venezuela will host the first meeting of the new association in June 2010.

Hosting the World Economic Forum for Latin America 2010, Uribe reaffirmed that it is a mistake to think of the unity of the Americas without the United States and Canada.Uribe defended his decision to allow the US military the use of 7 Colombian military bases precisely to fight terrorism and narco-trafficking, which he seems to see as one and the same problem ... "hopefully, such alliances could spread over the whole continent."
