In an article for a Peruvian magazine, the one-time wonder boy of US Hispanic TV claimed that the head of the Colombian secret police (DAS) had given him "precise and reliable information" of the plot. Bayly has since hired bodyguards and an armored vehicle whenever he moves around town in Bogota and or Lima from where he runs his TV shows nowadays.

Beefing up his political lingo and laying it thick for political purposes, Bayly stated that those who want to kill him are "Chavez' gorillas" and they intend to finish him off in Lima where Bayly has announced he will run for President. In another revealing moment the presenter let slip that the DAS chief hinted that he supplied him with the warning on the instructions of his boss, supposedly Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

As Bayly gathers right-wing kudos for his political CV in his bid to succeed President Alan Garcia as Peruvian President, Bayly reminded people that he aggressively opposed the candidacy of left-winger, Ollanta Humala during the last elections.In the 2001 elections, he supported Alvaro Vargas Llosa, a well-known anti-Chavist.
