The Government of Nicaragua announced Tuesday its decision to break diplomatic relations with Israel after the military strike ordered from Tel Aviv to the fleet of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The coordinator of Communication and Citizenship Council of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, was responsible for making the announcement on behalf of the nation's president, Daniel Ortega.

"The Government of Nicaragua suspended from this date, I repeat, the Government of Nicaragua suspends thereafter diplomatic relations with the Government of Israel," he said. Murillo explained that the rupture of ties with Israel responds to the approach of the Freedom Flotilla wich was illegal and clearly violated international humanitarian law.

The coordinator of the Council took the opportunity to send as part of the Central American president, condolences, as well as feelings of solidarity to the families of the victims of the attack on the caravan. Managua also demanded the release of the members of vessels detained by the Israeli Government. Finally, Murillo reiterated the support of Nicaragua to the struggle of the Palestinian people by creating their own state.

The Nicaraguan communications officer added that the Palestinians have the right, as all humanity, to live in peace and security in their own country, something that has been denied them for over 60 years by the Israeli occupation.  On the other hand, the representative of Nicaragua to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington denounced the attack on the boats as a crime against the State "suffering Palestinian people" and insisted the end of the blockade of Gaza.

The Freedom Flotilla, composed of six ships that sailed from Turkey towards the Gaza Strip to carry 10 tons of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, was attacked by the Israeli army on Monday at dawn. The operation killed a dozen activists, wounding 30 people.
