Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke by telephone to Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak to discuss the "need" to resume the peace process with the Palestinian Authority, the situation in Gaza including UN projects there, and the possibility of new flotillas headed to Gaza in an attempt to lift the blockade on the Strip, his press office said."The Secretary-General urged negotiations towards a two-state solution to resume in order to advance the Middle East peace process," the statement said Tuesday.

With respect to UN projects in Gaza, the Secretary-General welcomed the progress made and urged speedy implementation of the UN Relief and Works Agency's housing projects in Khan Yunis and Rafah.On the sailing of future flotillas, Ban reiterated his position that "meaningful steps" were needed to end the closure of Gaza and that "escalation should be avoided."
