Profiting From Haiti's Crisis: Disaster Capitalism in Washington's Backyardhttp://www.truthout.org/profiting-from-haitis-crisis-disaster-capitalism-washingtons-backyard56205

US corporations, private mercenaries, Washington and the International Monetary fund are using the crisis in Haiti to make a profit, promote unpopular neoliberal policies, and extend military and economic control over the Haitian people. Militarization is already underway. This week the US is sending thousands of troops and soldiers to the country. The Haitian government has signed over control of its capital airport to the US. Brazil and France have already lodged complaints that US military planes are now being given priority over other flights at the international airport.

Voices of Participatory Democracy in Venezuela: A Review of Venezuela Speaks! Voices from the Grassrootshttp://upsidedownworld.org/main/venezuela-archives-35/2329-voices-of-participatory-democracy-in-venezuela-a-review-of-venezuela-speaks-voices-from-the-grassroots

There are many different ways that the corporate media continues to misrepresent the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela. Many critics of this biased media coverage have directly challenged the demonization of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, but very few critics, if any, have exposed the media’s virtual erasure of the vibrant and growing participatory democracy in Venezuela.

Obama authorizes covert economic war against Venezuelahttp://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_5489.shtml WMR’s intelligence sources have reported that the Obama administration has authorized an economic war against Venezuela in order to destabilize the government of President Hugo Chavez.

A Quick Response to BBCs Article, Venezuelas economy in further slidehttp://www.venezuelanalysis.com/analysis/5084

There are few things more condescending and arrogant than a journalist who arrives in a foreign country, walks around briefly in its streets, and from a few superficial observations, believes they can make a judgement on the entire economic situation of a country, as well as the social movements and hopes of millions of members of that country.

U.S. Global Intervention : 'This Madness Must Cease'http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/us-global-intervention-this-madness.html

First, according to historians such as William Appleman Williams, the United States has pursued dominant influence in the world ever since the 1890s. After conquering the North American continent and all but exterminating its inhabitants, U.S. policy has been shaped by the pursuit of markets, investment opportunities, cheap labor, and vital natural resources.

The Merchants of Fear: Israel's Profiting from Homeland Insecurityhttp://usa.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/70723

"In order to exploit that resource to the full, Israel needed the likes of Chertoff, Lieberman, Schumer and Specter to hype the concept of “homeland security” in the United States. Americans, however, should have been asking a couple of pertinent questions. Which homeland? And whose security?"

Ron Paul: After CIA coup, agency runs militaryhttp://www.mega.nu/ampp/webb.html video

There's been a coup, have you heard? It's the CIA coup. The CIA runs everything, they run the military. They're the ones who are over there lobbing missiles and bombs on countries. ... And of course the CIA is every bit as secretive as the Federal Reserve. ... And yet think of the harm they have done since they were established [after] World War II. They are a government unto themselves. They're in businesses, in drug businesses, they take out dictators ... We need to take out the CIA.

Israel's assassination policyhttp://current.com/items/91957321_israels-assassination-policy.htm video

In recent weeks Israel has escalated its practice of assassinations in the West Bank and Gaza. At the end of December, Israeli special forces broke into the Nablus homes of Anan Subih, Raed Surkaji, and Ghassan Abu Sharekh and killed them.

Official Israeli sources linked the three to the killing of Israeli settler Meir Avshalom Hai who was killed while driving to the illegal outpost in which he lived. The killings are the latest in Israel's long-time practice of assassinations, illegal under international law. Many contradictory reports have surfaced over the December 26 assassinations. The Real News' Lia Tarachansky spoke to the families of two of the killed.

A HAITIAN DISASTER RELIEF SCENARIO WAS ENVISIONED BY THE U.S. MILITARY THE DAY BEFORE THE QUAKEhttp://fromthewilderness.wordpress.com/2010/01/21/a-haitian-disaster-relief-scenario-was-envisioned-by-the-u-s-military-the-day-before-the-quake/

A Haiti disaster relief scenario had been envisaged at the headquarters of US Southern Command SOUTHCOM in Miami one day prior to the earthquake.  The holding of pre-disaster simulations pertained to the impacts of a hurricane in Haiti. They were held on January 10. (Bob Brewin, Defense launches online system to coordinate Haiti relief efforts (1/15/10) — GovExec.com, complete text of article in Annex)

HAITI: UN Peacekeepers in the Gaza Strip of the Caribbeanhttp://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/haiti-un-peacekeepers-in-the-gaza-strip-of-the-caribbean/

At the end of the article is a video which shows another massive UN attack on Cite Soleil that took place on December 22, 2006. The narrator is Kevin Pina, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and special correspondent for KPFA’s Flashpoints program, who lived and reported from Haiti for many years. As you can see, the July 2005 attack, you will read about in this article is not an isolated incident.

Gaza Residents Donate to Haiti Relief Efforthttp://www.democracynow.org/2010/1/19/headlines/gaza_residents_donate_to_haiti_relief_effort

Aid contributions for Haiti continue to pour in from around the world. On Sunday, a group of Palestinians in Gaza offered to send donations. Jamal Al-Khudari of the Committee Against the Siege on Gaza: “We are sending donations, because, as Palestinian people, we suffered a lot, and we, the Palestinian people, feel more than other people of the world with the suffering of the people in Haiti. We suffer a lot, and we feel their suffering. That is why we decided to donate from the center of suffering, from the besieged Gaza.”

Israel’s war on Gaza verges on genocide, says British Jewish leader http://www.irna.ir/En/View/FullStory/?NewsId=907719&IdLanguage=3

“The West, United States and Britain in particular, are to be blamed for the misery of Palestinians. The world has so far shared very little positive progress in helping relieve the Palestinians from the Zionist crimes.”

New videotape on Israeli soldiers torturing and stealing human organs disclosed http://www.palestine-info.co.uk/En/

The Zionization of Disaster Reliefhttp://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2010/01/19/the-zionization-of-disaster-relief/

Didn’t know there was anything particularly Zionist about providing disaster relief? You learn something new every day. This is a story of exploiting the suffering of poor, defenseless Haitians on behalf of Israeli triumphalism. Sol Salbe translated an eye-opening column from Yediot by an Israeli doctor who was an integral member of all Israeli international disaster response teams until recently. Then he made the mistake of writing a mildly critical statement about Israeli disaster relief efforts.

As a result, he was relieved of his obligation for further IDF service and further participation in the disaster relief program. The op ed is so revealing (and not yet available online in English) I’m going to quote large sections. An explanatory note–at Israel’s Haiti field hospital, they delivered what the Israeli PR flacks called “the first baby since the earthquake.” The medical staff urged the woman to name her baby “Israel” and she was only to eager to oblige. Another Israeli PR coup!

Pennies for Haiti, Billions for Israel, Egypt http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2010/01/16/blogs/coopscorner/entry6102995.shtml

Consider this: in fiscal 1998 Haiti received $106 million from the U.S, the No. 9 nation among foreign aid recipients. - Compare that to the more than $5 billion paid out to Israel and Egypt

Criminal Complicity of a Senile Leadership The autocratic regime of Egyptian leader Mubarakhttp://palestinechronicle.com/view_article_details.php?id=15696

The autocratic regime of Egyptian leader Mubarak is more and more overtly complicit in aiding and abetting the inhumane strangulation and criminal blockade of the Gaza strip. It has used all kinds of phony pretexts to prevent international aid from reaching Gaza. Under the preposterous disguise of “national security” and “state sovereignty”, it has invented new measures aimed at further tightening Israel’s illegal embargo of the territory, thus contributing to the suffering of an already gravely battered population. Moreover, the Egyptian regime has continuously stoked up the chauvinistic sentiments of its populace in order to further its criminal policies and, more insidiously, disguise its failures of leadership and lack of political legitimacy.

A U.S. charade in peace efforthttp://english.pnn.ps/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7787

The Palestinian national struggle continues to be largely ignored by the Obama administration. Our new president has failed to bring a new approach. As has been the case for the last 40 years, Palestinian attempts to settle the conflict through diplomacy are ignored or downplayed. When violence erupts, Palestinians are blamed and labeled terrorists. The United States maintains the charade that peace in Israel/Palestine is a priority and every new administration promises to bring the much-promised peace to the region only to fall into the same pattern of inaction and excuse-making.

Israel and the U.S. are pursuing a course seemingly calculated to reduce Palestinians to a state of hopelessness. Gaza remains under siege even though it has no army, no air force, and no navy. It has no tanks, planes, or helicopters. Gaza has no anti-aircraft or anti-tank missiles, no warning systems, and no refuge in which its 1.5 million civilians (including 800,000 children) can hide when the attacks by Israel commence.

VIDEO-RT-CHAVEZ STATES A U.S. WEAPON TEST CAUSED THE HAITIAN EARTHQUAKEhttp://fromthewilderness.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/chavez-states-a-u-s-weapon-test-caused-the-haitian-earthquake/

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has once again accused the United States of playing God. But this time it’s Haiti’s disastrous earthquake that he thinks the U.S. was behind. Spanish newspaper ABC quotes Chavez as saying that the U.S. navy launched a weapon capable of inducing a powerful earthquake off the shore of Haiti. He adds that this time it was only a drill and the final target is … destroying and taking over Iran.

VIDEO-RT OBAMA CONTINUES TO SUPPORT REGIMES THAT KILL CIVILIANShttp://fromthewilderness.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/obama-continues-to-support-regimes-that-kill-civilians/

RT’s Anastasia Churkina sits down with award-winning journalist Allan Nairn, who doesn’t sugarcoat Obama’s foreign policies – the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the cover-up behind the war on terror, and America’s military arms stretched across the globe. Nairn calls upon revolution, and having Obama and Bush tried for murders they have committed.

VIDEO: UN Peacekeepers and US Military Get Rambo with Haitians at Airporthttp://hcvanalysis.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/video-un-peacekeepers-and-us-military-get-rambo-with-haitians-at-airport/

A reporter for Cuban TV is covering the repression of a group of Haitian men at the airport. While the video says it is US troops playing the tough guys, it is primarily the UN’s peacekeepers (blue helmets or as Haitians say, “casques blues”) with occasional assists from the US military in the head cracking department. The UN “peacekeepers” carry visions of Rambo wherever they go in Haiti always trying to provoke a fight. More on this issue later in an article I’m about to finish: “HAITI: The Gaza Strip of the Caribbean.” Stay tuned!

FBI arrests 22 in arms industry bribery stinghttp://rawstory.com/news/afp/FBI_arrests_22_in_arms_industry_bri_01192010.html

FBI agents Monday arrested 22 people working in the arms and security industries in a massive sting operation, charging them with trying to bribe an African defense minister. The 22 were held under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The detainees are charged with trying to obtain a 15-million-dollar contract in an African nation to outfit the presidential guard. The Corrupt Practices Act bars US companies and citizens from bribing foreign officials to win business.

During the two-year investigation, FBI agents pretended to be acting on behalf of the defense minister of an African country. The defendants allegedly agreed to pay a 20 percent "commission" to a sales agent they believed represented the minister in order to win the contract. They were told half the "commission" would be paid to the defense minister. Most of the suspects worked for US military equipment manufacturers, two worked for British firms and one for an Israeli company.

Rio de Janeiro: Control of the Poor Seen as Crucial for the Olympicshttp://upsidedownworld.org/main/news-briefs-archives-68/2325-rio-de-janeiro-control-of-the-poor-seen-as-crucial-for-the-olympics

The prospect of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 followed by the Olympic Games in 2016 has reignited the debate about public security in a country where there is an undeclared war taking place in the favelas between the military police, paramilitary groups, and drug traffickers, but where the principal victims are the poor.

Witness confirms corruption Valencia Cossiohttp://colombiareports.com/colombia-news/news/7778-witness-in-high-profile-corruption-trial-sheds-new-light-on-the-accused.html

In the trial against Medellin's ex-Director of Prosecution Guillermo Valencia and a business associate of notorious drug lord 'Don Mario', a witness on Wednesday testified that the two accused men did indeed request information about the capo. Infrastructures like Metrocable are only possible in socialismhttp://www.abn.info.ve/go_news5.php?articulo=216444&lee=17

Caracas, Jan 20. ABN.- The President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez pointed out that social infrastructures like the Metrocable system (a cable car linked to the metro system) inaugurated this Wednesday are only possible in socialism.  The reflection was made by Chavez this Wednesday after putting in motion the Metrocable system in San Agustin del Sur, Caracas. Likewise, the Head of State said that after 200 years, capitalism only left more poverty in the world because people was abandoned. “In Venezuela, the governments of the past belonged to the bourgeoisie, rich people ruled and country incomes were invested in themselves,” Chavez explained.  To the people attending the ceremony, Chavez said: “The battle will be stronger day after day, but we will defeat.” In addition, the Head of State unveiled a commemorative plaque allusive to the transportation system and he greeted all the people from the community that gathered to accompany him at the ceremony.  The Metrocable system has a route of 1.8 kilometers long (1.12 mi) and five stations: Parque Central, Hornos de Cal, La Ceiba, El Manguito and San Agustin. It consists of 54 cable cars arriving at a frequency of 27 seconds. The total route takes about 9 minutes. Each cabin has a capacity for 10 people, which represents 1,500 people per hour and 15,000 passengers per day.  According to estimations, about 40 thousand people will use the Metrocable system. This project was built by the Venezuelan Government, through the Ministry of People's Power for Public Works and Housing and the Brazilian company Odebrecht.
