In January of this year the Davids committee presented its very thorough report. The main conclusion was that the military action of the US and the UK against Iraq “had no sound mandate under international law.” The famous US Security Council Resolution 1441 “cannot reasonably be interpreted (as the government did) as authorising individual Member States to use military force to compel Iraq to comply with the Security Council’s resolutions without authorisation from the Security Council”.
The committee added to this that as it was inevitable that the US/British action would result in regime change – a policy the Dutch government had explicitly rejected – the political support of Mr. Balkenende and his team for the war was “to some extent disingenuous.” One of the true reasons for the Dutch position were “the largely unspoken Atlantic solidarity considerations.”This harsh judgment on the government can only be seen as a robust slap on the wrist of the active politicians for a policy that is considered highly irresponsible and destabilizing by parts of the Dutch elite.
There was great consternation in government circles. As yet there is still not a definitive official reaction but a leaked concept suggests that Mr. Balkenende will have to eat humble-pie. The government reaction will say that its position of 2003 “has found insufficient support with the international community and is no longer accepted by other countries.” The government now accepts that “for such an action a more adequate mandate under international law would have been necessary.”

The impetus for weaning Americans away from their infatuation with war, if it comes at all, will come from within the officer corps. It certainly won’t come from within the political establishment, the Republican Party gripped by militaristic fantasies and Democrats too fearful of being tagged as weak on national security to exercise independent judgment.
Were there any lingering doubt on that score, Barack Obama, the self-described agent of change, removed it once and for all: by upping the ante in Afghanistan he has put his personal imprimatur on the Long War.

There have been hundreds of articles in the last few weeks attacking Chavez in any fashion possible … but some of the articles, even if they are opinion articles, sound more like hate articles.
I have chosen one recent Miami Herald opinion article (below) as an example of not only how corporate media in the USA (and Canada and much of Europe) are very willing to promote hate against someone whom their readers know little or nothing about while at the same time recounting complete lies about a country that most of their readers have never visited or can’t even pinpoint on a map.

On December 27, in the eastern Kunar region of Afghanistan, ten Afghans, eight of whom were schoolchildren, were dragged from their beds and shot by US forces during a nighttime raid. Afghan government investigators said the eight students were aged from 11 to 17 years.
This incident is but one example of countless atrocities US military personnel have carried out in the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, US military personnel torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib, Iraqi civilians suffering the violence meted out by US forces, or US forces detaining schoolchildren in Baghdad, the list of atrocities is seemingly endless.

British NGO teams up with Colombian campaigners to oppose the EU-Colombia free trade agreement.Justice for Colombia (JFC), a group that campaigns for workers' rights in the Latin American nation, led a group of left-wing Colombian campaigners to meet European commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and members of the European Parliament in Brussels this week, reports Tribune magazine.The delegation intended to highlight human rights abuses in Colombia and persuade MEPs to vote against the proposed trade deal. JFC secretary Liam Craig-Best said that “They’re talking about clauses that the Colombians will have to respect human rights. They seem absolutely unable to give any definition of what the Colombian government have to do in order to trigger some sort of sanction.” JFC further stated that 49 trade unionists were killed in Colombia in 2008, and that most of the killers were not brought to justice. Colombian Senator Jorge Robledo, who attended the hearing, highlighted the fact that the U.S. and Canada have not yet passed trade agreements with Colombia, and stated that “It would be very grave if the EU absolved Uribe in human rights when neither the US nor Canada absolve him. Does Europe put commerce before human rights?” Also scheduled to attend were the leader of the Central Unitaria de Trabajdores de Colombia (CUT), and Yessika Hoyos, daughter of a murdered Colombian trade union leader, who is now a prominent human rights activist.

Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world to be a trade unionist. In 2008, 49 trade unionists were murdered, a 25% increase from the year before. This escalation in violence directly contradicts the claims of the Uribe regime that the situation is improving.
