A leading legislator of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Thursday stressed Saudi Arabia was fuelling conflicts in the Middle East region. Speaking to Deutschland Radio, the Foreign Policy Spokesman of the SPD Rolf Muetzenich said Saudi Arabia was 'actually promoting conflicts' instead of calming down the situation. The opposition MP pointed also to the negative role of Riyadh in the Arab upheavals.Muetzenich cited the Saudi invasion of Bahrain and its pro-Mubarak stance in the Egyptian revolution as such negative examples.
He also referred to Saudi Arabia's ongoing border disputes with its neighbors, including Yemen, as a source of concern. The SPD deputy slammed also secret German plans to sell 200 Leopard combat tanks to Saudi Arabia worth billions of euros, saying it would lead to a new round of arms race in the Mideast. He also pointed out that the arms delivery to Saudi Arabia was problematic since that country was not stable domestically. German parliamentaries were up in arms over the tank deal, arguing the German constitution bans the sale of weapons to crisis-hit regions like the Persian Gulf.
