Washington, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) A total of 69 U.S. Congress formally requested that President Barack Obama signs an executive order to close the controversial institution known as the School of the Americas, today confirmed the group SOA Watch. On its website, the NGO calls on all Americans to unite in order to dissolve the now called Institute for Hemispheric Security Cooperation (WHINSEC by acronym in English)."We urge you to support the initiative of members of Congress and help save the U.S. government $ 180 million (...) in addition to that action honor the sovereignty and human rights of Latin American peoples," the digital message.
The WHINSEC is notorious for decades for his role in training soldiers and military leaders of Latin America who then committed violations of human rights in their respective countries.Legislators demand sent to the White House are headed by Democrats James McGovern, Steve Cohen and John Lewis. Only two Republicans accompanying the proposal, Michael Fitzpatrick and Ron Paul, the last presidential candidate for 2012.The facility, located in the state of Georgia, made headlines in the early 90s of last century when the Pentagon released training manuals from their instructors in endorsing the use of torture, execution and extortion.
Since 1946, the SOA has trained 60 000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, psychological warfare and interrogation tactics. These graduates used these skills to wage a war against its own people. As a result hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, murdered, disappeared, massacred and forced to seek shelter from those trained in the School of the Murderers, the statement of the NGO.
