The modernization of the socialist system, the case of the Cuban Five and the media campaign against Cuba were the focus of attention during the beginning of a series of debates in Brazil to make known the Cuban reality.Organized by the Mauricio Grabois foundation of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Abramo Perseu foundation of the ruling Workers' Party (PT), the exchange of views took place on Friday night at Club Homs.Zuleika Romay, president of the Cuban Book Institute, Magali Llort, deputy and mother of Fernando Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States, and journalist Rosa Miriam Elizalde,

of the Web site Cubadebate, participated in the panel.National President of the Opinio Juris, Antonia Mara Vieira Loguercio, the PCdoB leader at the Municipal Chamber of Sao Paulo, Jamil Murad, and National Secretary of Popular Movement of the PT, Renato Simoes were the Brazilian panelists.Fernando's mother called for solidarity of all Brazilians for the release of her son, as well as Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, who have being unjustly imprisoned for almost 13 years in U.S. jails.Attorney Vieira Loguercio said the case of the Five is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of how the U.S. government reacts against Cuba.

Romay detailed the modernization of the Cuban economic model adopted at the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, held in April and preceded by an extended debate, involving more than 8,500,000 Cubans. The new guidelines of the Cuban economic policy aimed to improve and strengthen the Cuban socialist system, Romay said.Elizalde unmasked lies spread by the right-wing press worldwide against Cuba, citing the example of the false claim that the Cuban government prevents access to the Internet,

when in fact it is the United States that applies a technology blockade against Cuba .The panelists and participants in the debate agreed on the need to strengthen and expand these discussions to gain a better and deeper understanding of Cuban reality.Similar discussions will take place in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia next week, also organized by Brazilian political party foundations
